Work Text:
It was a windy day out on the islands. While the spirits were all out doing their own things, Yin-Yang was outside hanging out with the other magical objects. Yin was having a normal conversation with Book, but that was until Ice Cube came along. "Hey guys! I kind of need help with something." She said. Book quickly got up to see what it was. "What's wrong now, Icy?" "Well, me and Saw were running around but then a gust of wind took my hat and flung it up to that tree. Yin-Yang! You have a pair of wings, go get it!" Ice Cube told the black and white demons. But they looked a bit confused. "But.. why can't Lightning get it for you? Or even Clover? They can also fly!" Yang told her. "They’re not here right now. They had to help Cabby with something inside. But until they come back, just try and get it back, please." Icy explained. Yin-Yang reluctantly got up and began to walk to the tree where her hat was. Unfortunately for them, it was a tall distance away.
"Guys, what are you doing?" Book asked them, adding, "You know you can't fly!". "Well.. we can try!" Yin told her. They opened up their black and white wings and jumped up. They could only flap their wings for a few seconds and only lifted off a few inches from the grass, but their wings quickly gave out on them. Yang groaned as they ran over to get a chair. They put it on the ground and got on it to jump higher. Icy took notice of this. "Y'know, you don't have to do it. I can just wait for the others now." Ice Cube told them. "Nah! We got this!" Yin insisted. The other magical objects seemed to notice, as they walked up to watch them struggle.
Yin-Yang jumped off the chair, and this time, they made it up a bit higher. They flapped their wings fast in an attempt to lift themselves up more, and it was only barely working, thankfully. They looked up as they got a bit closer to the branch that held her knitted blue hat , but before they could even get it, another gust of wind hit them, distracting them and causing them to fall. Ice Cube gasped and quickly made a small patch of snow for them to land in. They ended up landing directly into the snow. Bubble then ran up to them. "Are you goiys alroight?" She asked. Yang controlled the body and shook their head, annoyed.
Lightning, Clover and Cabby then conveniently showed up. "We're back! What's going on?" Lightning asked. "Ice Cube's hat got stuck in that tree and we can't get it down." Suitcase told him. "Oh, I got it!" He said back. Yin-Yang sat up and adjusted the hood on their purple cloak as they watched him fly up to the tree and retrieve the hat with no issue. They felt both upset and embarrassed. Lightning flew back down to Ice Cube. "Here's your hat!" He said. "Thanks!" She replied, tossing the hat right back on top of her head.
Yin-Yang brushed themselves off and stormed back to the II Hotel. The others noticed and followed them. They went into the lobby and laid down face first onto the couch. Book saw them and tried to reason with them. "Well.. at least you tried." She told them. "You're not helping." Yin talked back. "But at the same time, yeah. I actually thought we were gonna make it. But that stupid gust of wind got us and our wings can't even support us! What are we doing wrong?!" Yang said, still mad. Some of the other magical objects came in. "Who knows. But that also sparks the question, how do you have fully grown wings but can't even fly with them?" Lightning asked. Gaty walked in to chime in another thought. "Probably has something to do with them being demons. They're commonly known to be flightless.."
"I think I have something about that in my files, give me a second." Cabby explained. She opened up her drawer and skimmed through the files, eventually finding the one on Yin-Yang. "Yep, here it is: Based on what they told me, they were basically created as demons since forever and eventually gained fully developed wings, horns and a tail suddenly in 2021. But the issue is just that they never used their wings, at all. Almost like they never existed to begin with." She explained. Yin-Yang nodded, confirming that it was correct.
"Yeah, while our wings did grow in as we got older, but they just kinda... stayed there. Never used." Yin said. "Aww. Well, with that inform-EIGHT-ion, how about you let us try to help you get a hang of those wings?" Saw recommended. But Yin-Yang was uncertain. "But.. didn't you see what happened out there? We only made it a few feet away from the ground!" Yang exclaimed. "I know that. But it'll never hurt to try again, right? Plus, if you don't try now, you'll never be able to later on :/." Saw continued to say. The demons looked outside for a moment and made up their mind. "Well, when you put it in that direction.. then.. I guess we can test it out." Yin told her. Saw nodded at them with a smile. "That's the spirit! Now let's see what we can do." She said. Yin-Yang got up as they left the lobby.
~~
On Goiky, Saw and Clover assisted the demons with controlling their wings. Yang also decided to let Yin be in control for this.
"Alright, so, you can obviously open up your wings, right?" Saw asked them. Yin nodded as he opened up his wings. "Alright. Now, let's test some easy things out again. Try and jump up to see if you can properly move and flutter your wings." Clover suggested. Yin wasn't sure but eventually did it. It looked as though he was struggling to keep himself up. Something also caught Clover’s eye, which made her tell them to stop. "Hold on! I just noticed you were doing something incorrectly." She exclaimed. Yin looked confused and got down as he panted.
"The moment you jumped, you started using your wings way too fast. Cabby told me that using your wings that way isn't the best solution, since it’ll drain your energy more easily. Thus, not keeping you up in the air." The lucky butterfly explained. "Oh. But with that, how are me and Yang supposed to get up?" Yin asked. "The best solution would be to try and flap your wings at a more medium-ish speed, and to do it before jumping up." She recommended. Saw also pulled out a timer to see how long they could stay up.
The demon nodded and flapped his wings slowly but steadily, and then he jumped again. Clover’s advice worked, as they kept themselves up for a longer period of time. But he did get down back on the grass after a while. Saw stopped the timer. "Wow! You were up in the air for a solid 35 seconds! Not bad." She told them. Yin was happy to hear that. He, along with Yang, haven't been able to stay up in the air for THAT long. "Woah! That's great! Now what's next?" Yin asked. "The next lesson will revolve around soaring through the air. We'll let Lightning and Fan help you with that. And yeah, while we know Lightning’s part of Gaty's... 'Anti Demon Alliance'.. he's still one of the other ones around here who can fly and provide you with more information than us. As well as experience." Saw told them. The demon followed along.
~~
"So what are YOUR tips for flying around without being knocked over?" Yang asked Lightning. Now, he was in control to get some information. "Well, at least for me, it's better to try and fly when there isn't much wind. But when there is, try to fly ‘in sync’ with it, and don't let it tip you over. We’ll demonstrate." Lightning told him. He flew up and moved around, while Fan, the wind spirit, used his powers and blew a gust of wind at the moth. He noticed it and turned around to be in the direction that it blew in. Once that was done, he came back down to face the demons again. "Now, see if you can try and handle it. But first, try to stand on that table for more height again."
Yang went up to the table. He flapped his wings and jumped. He started to slowly move away from the table, doing his best to not hit the ground. "Oh, here comes another round of wind! Watch out!" Lightning warned, with Fan sending another gust as them. The demon listened and turned left. It was working. Plus, the wind helped him speed up a bit. After a moment, he got tired and landed on the grass. "How was that?" Yang asked. "Not too bad!" Fan complimented. The demon smiled. He especially loved seeing himself improve.
And after that, they both went back in control and took a little pause to pass down the information they got from the others down to each other.
~~
Later, the other magical objects gathered back together on Goiky to make sure that Yin-Yang properly gathered all the information they had received from earlier. "Alright guys! We brought you here to the Zoomy Ramp of Yoyle Legend for your last test. What you’re going to do is run down, use your wings to keep you in the air until you’re ready to head back towards us!” Clover told Yin-Yang. They nodded their head and walked up to the ramp, looking down to see the… steep drop. As well as the canal. They were a bit nervous. But they, exhaled, absolutely confident that they could do it. They got into a good position, and opened up their wings ready for the sign. “RUN, NOW!” Yelled Book.
With that, the demons ran down the ramp, zoomed and flew up to the sky. Going slow, and with just a little bit of wind in their way. They started to fly more higher up, and staying in the air for longer than before. “Careful guys, there’s more wind approaching!” Cabby told them, feeling the incoming breeze ahead. The demons looked back and listened. They made a right turn this time. However, the wind unexpectedly began blowing stronger, catching them off guard and causing them to panic momentarily. Not wanting to take any risks, they decided to head back to their league. "Don't worry guys, you got this! Stay calm and go!" Book reassured. Yin-Yang, however, started to pant and sweat as their wings started to give out all over again, causing them to panic further. "It's not working guys! The wind’s slowing us down!” Yin yelled. "Oh dear.. they're not going to make it with all of this wind!" Candle exclaimed. Unfortunately, she was right, and the demons came falling down right into the Goiky Canal.
*SPLASH!*
Book screamed, seeing her friends sink into the water, and, using her own powers, summoned her transportation cloud to retrieve them. The Cupid hopped on and flew to their direction as fast as she could. “Grab onto me!” She called out, the demons quickly swam up to the surface and grabbed her by the hand, being tossed onto her cloud before heading back to the grasslands. Some of the rest of the league ran to them in worry. Yin-Yang laid face down on the ground, drenched.
“Oh my Amora! Are you guys alright?!” She didn't get an answer. But after a few seconds, the demons sat up, feeling a little bit of blood leak out of their nose, as well as a few bruises over their limbs. They were lightheaded and their head was spinning. "Cabby! Get them towels and some bandages!" The Cupid called out. Cabby rolled to the hotel to get those things. The demons ended up falling back with a defeated face as their head spun. "I can't believe it.. we were doing so great..!" Yin said sadly. "I'm so sorry guys.. We tried everything we could!" Book apologized. "It's not your fault. Maybe tell that to the stupid wind!" Yang vaguely reassured..
The others involved looked down and felt terrible. Cabby came back with the stuff and gave them to her. "Don’t fret, let me clean that blood off your face." Book said. The demons sat up slowly and had a bandage plastered onto their face. Saw then walked in. "Well.. at least your time was at one minute and fifty seconds..?" She tried to cheer them up. Book and Cabby gave her the look of: "You're not helping." But once the demons heard those words, their disappointment seemed to go away a bit.
~~
The time was now 10:21pm.
The magical objects retreated to their underground hideout, feeling guilty with what had just occurred with their demonized friends.
"I just don't understand.. they were doing so well and fell off immediately afterwards!" Clover exclaimed while rocking in her seat. "I don't know either, Clove, It looks like it just isn't that easy to teach someone a new skill. I mean, if you think about it.. we were rushing the process a bit too much." Suitcase replied. Using her communication device, Teardrop spoke to her league in telepathy. “Well, these accidents happen, right? We could’ve tried again once they were fine.”
“..What are you talking about? An accident??” Ice Cube chimed in. “YOU were the one who suggested we try using the ramp in the first place!” Teardrop shrugged in response. “At least it was better than Candle’s idea of using the roof! Plus, how was I supposed to know that the wind would get worse?!”
"Okay... But whoit are we going to do with Yin and Yang noiw? I hoiven't seen them this upset in a whoile." Bubble questioned, breaking the argument. "I guess the best answer would be to try and just.. let them know that it's okay to not be able to fly. Or at least give them time until they're ready again?" Book recommended. There was a silent pause until someone's phone began to ring. It was Book's, and it was a call from her friend, Test Tube. She picked up, curious with what she wanted.
"Uhh.. Book? You may need to come back outside to our side of the island.” Test Tube said nervously, confusing Book. "Why? Is there something wrong?" She asked. "Well.. the easiest way to say this is that YIN-YANG’S ON TOP THE TOP OF THE ROOF OF OUR HOTEL RIGHT NOW!! And remember how they can't fly?!" The scientist warned. Book gasped. "WHAT?! I'll be there right away!" She said, quickly hanging up and dashing out. "Book, what's wrong?!" Cabby asked. "It's Yin-Yang!"
~~
Yin-Yang laid on top of the hotel roof with their wings out, and still with their various bodily bruises.. They had snuck up there earlier and stole the keys to the entrance so nobody else could get in or out. Paintbrush called out to them, accompanied by Test Tube and OJ. “Guys! Will you just get down here already?! It’s dangerous to be up at such a high level!” They called out. “No!” Yang yelled back.
The demons then heard someone else call out to them. It was Book, who was being lifted into the air by Clover. "Guys! What do you think you're doing?!" Book warned them. Yin-Yang sat up to face her. "We're not gonna give up that easily, y'know." Yang told her. "If we're going to learn how to fly, we're gonna do it NOW. I refuse to be a demon who can't fly anymore!" He controlled the body and stood up, looking down at the ground to where their friends, and a few other bystanders watched. Clover put Book down so she could talk to her friends.
"Guys, listen, we’re all really sorry that we failed to teach you how to use your wings, but you don't have to keep pushing yourselves! We can always try another day." Book apologized. The conjoined demons denied. "You don't understand, Book, we DO want to keep up! Yeah, we did sound defeated after getting hurt, but the moment Saw told us how well we did, it just motivated us to keep going!" Yin explained. Book was still uncertain. "Just trust us Book, we know what we're doing, we each got the memo now, and you and the others shouldn't worry. We'll be fine! ..Hopefully!" Book looked at them and nodded. "Alright then, if this is what you want, then who am I to stop you? I'll just get Icy to make another bundle of snow for you just in case. Is what she said as she tried to call out for Clover. But once again, the wind started blowing stronger.
The demons noticed this and quickly gave Book the keys to head back. "Quickly Book, get down from here, Don't worry about us!" Yin reassured. Book took the keys and was about to head for the door, but then something went wrong.
"OH SHOOT!"
Book had accidentally tripped on a large broken tree twig, lost her footing due to the wind and fell off the high roof. Yin-Yang's eyes went wide, and everyone watching gasped, Because as far as they know..
Book can't fly either.
And no, not because she also has wings that she can't function, but it was due to the fact that she was a non transformed Cupid, and therefore literally DOESN'T have any wings to support her. And she had unfortunately also forgotten her love wand. The demons knew they had to do something, because if not, their best friend's life would be on the line. They looked down at the ground again, and decided to take the risk as well. They jumped down and caught their friend by the hand. All three of them shut their eyes, expecting yet another bad crash.. but.. something occurred.
Book opened her eyes as she saw herself not on the ground in pain. Yin-Yang looked as well, setting her back down and looked at their back. Their wings were fluttering, but not in the desperate way that they were before. They were in a more natural manner. They also looked at Book. Who had her hand over her mouth.
"A-are we..?!" Yin asked. Book nodded. "..Y-YES! YOU GUYS ARE ACTUALLY FLYING!!" She said happily as the others stared at them in shock, Along with the magical objects smiling. Yin and Yang were in pure disbelief. Was this really it? They decided to test it out again by trying to soar around, and it was true. That true leap of faith was exactly what they needed in an attempt to successfully fly. They decided to go higher as the others watched them go all around. Amazed at what they were seeing. Paintbrush decided to take out their own phone and film it. They were blown away by this as well. The demons laughed in joy with every step. Eventually, they decided to come back down to the ground. A majority of the Magical Objects surrounded them and cheered for them.
"I can't believe it guys! You really did it!" Saw said. "We did! We really did!!" Yin exclaimed happily. "It kinda looks like not giving up and… ‘believing in ourselves’ really was the best option, huh?" Yang told Book. She laughed a bit and agreed. "Yeah.. heh."
"But regardless of all that.. this is such an incredible achievement! I'm genuinely so proud of you both of you." Candle told them. Yin-Yang smiled at her and decided to fly up again. Paintbrush then approached them and showed them the video that they took. "Woahhh. We really went all out, right?" Yang asked. Paintbrush nodded at him. "Y'know.. can you send us that video.. I feel like it would be a fun idea to send it to the goddesses, they're gonna freak out!!" Yang suggested. "Oh! Uh, sure." They said, sending the video to them as they got the notification. "Thanks!" Yin said as they flew away. "They sure are happy about this, aren't they." Cabby told them. "Yeah, But you and the rest of your league make sure they don't get too crazy afterwards." Paintbrush suggested while scratching their bristles. "Yep, I'll make sure of that. No worries."
On the other hand.. Gaty and her A.D.A. members stared in disbelief over the demonized symbol now suddenly being able to fly. Teardrop telepathically spoke to Gaty. "Huh. I have to say, I really wasn't expecting them to make that jump, I thought they were going to crash and injure Book!" Gaty nodded in agreement. "Same here.. but wait. Why'd you even go along with helping them, Lightning? Not very true to what this alliance stands for, right!" "Yeah, yeah I know, and I'm sorry! Book and the others wanted me to help. It was just this one time, I swear on my heart that it didn't mean anything!" He desperately apologized. Gaty didn't buy his apology at first, but sighed and accepted it. "It's all good. But going forward, don't get all raveled up into anything that involves them anymore!" Gaty shifted her view to see Yin-Yang with Book and Icy, showing off their new ability, with a look of uncertainty on her gray eyes. "..besides. you'll never know if those demons will be capable of anything else."
