history, huh?

Summary:

Scott and Kip gave Shane and Ilya hope when they kissed on the day the Admirals won the Stanley Cup. But before that, the ones who gave Scott hope were Alex, the son of the President of the United States, and Henry, the Prince of England.

Notes:

I love all of these couples, and I can’t stop thinking about how cool it would be if the stories all took place in the same universe!! English isn’t my first language, so sorry for any mistakes! I hope you enjoy it!!

Work Text:

Scott wouldn’t have considered himself friends with Alex Claremont-Diaz, but he had spoken to the man several times at events they both attended. Scott had gotten somewhat used to it, but it was still a little crazy to talk to the president’s son. Scott had come a long way, that was what he always thought when he greeted the eldest son.

But Alex was easy to talk to. He asked Scott about the games, saying that whenever he could, he always tried to watch, and Hunter had already spotted Alex in the stands a few times.

The guy was nice and never got himself into any trouble, aside, of course, from the gossip pages that always managed to dig up something irrelevant to comment on. So when Scott woke up that morning and opened his phone, he was a little surprised to see the most widely shared news.

THE $75,000 FALL — Prince Henry and the First Son of the U.S. Come to Blows at the Royal Wedding

Below the headline was a photo of Alex Claremont-Diaz and Prince Henry lying on the ground with a cake, more specifically, what was left of the cake after it had been knocked over.

It was clear the headline was exaggerated, there didn’t seem to have been any physical violence between the two men, but there was no denying it was a shocking scene.

“This time Alex really got himself into trouble.” Scott thought, laughing as he got out of bed to start his day.

...

Scott wasn’t much into keeping up with the internet, much less the lives of famous people. He knew Alex a little, but he didn’t know anything about Henry, other than the fact that he was the Prince of England. So he didn’t really pay much attention to the cake incident.

But in the days that followed, several posts began to appear claiming that Alex and Henry were actually friends and that the whole thing had been nothing more than a joke between the two and an accident. Even photos and interviews of the two together were posted.

To Scott, all of it seemed like just a way to smooth things over, especially considering who the two men were and the fact that the next U.S. election was approaching. An alleged fight between the First Son and the Prince of England couldn’t possibly be good for the elections.

Still, Scott didn’t dwell on it. Who knows? Maybe Alex and Henry really had been friends for some time and just wanted to keep it private.

...

Kip was the most beautiful man Scott had ever seen, and when he walked out of the shop with his smoothie, he knew he wouldn’t be able to stop thinking about him.

And he really couldn’t. Every time he walked through that door and briefly talked to Kip, his heart seemed to grow warmer. Scott wanted to ask the man out, but he didn’t know how, especially considering how complicated his life was.

The opportunity came when he ran into Kip at one of the events he was attending and decided to invite him to dinner. He hadn’t expected the line at the restaurant to be so long, but it ended up becoming one of his best nights.

Kip was so beautiful, so incredible, and Scott was completely into him.

When he asked Kip not to leave, he hadn’t expected a yes in response. Coming home from practice, from games, and finding Kip on his couch, in his kitchen, in his bed, was wonderful. It had been a long time since Scott had felt this happy.

But he knew it wouldn’t last forever.

Scott didn’t want to hurt Kip; he had never wanted to cause any pain to the man he had begun to love. When he was dancing with Elena and she said that Kip was happy, but also miserable, Scott felt his heart shatter.

When he said no to Kip’s request to come to his birthday party, even if only as a friend, he knew he had hurt him even more. Kip understood Scott’s situation; he was only asking the player to come to his birthday party. And even so, Scott said no.

The moment he heard the door close, he felt tears welling up in his eyes and was certain he needed to fix everything, but he didn’t know how. He was afraid, afraid of losing hockey, of losing his friends, his teammates, of losing everything. But what was the point? Now he had lost the man he loved, and that hurt more than anything.

...

That event was like any other, and Scott just wanted to leave. The only thing he could think about was how awful the past few weeks had been. He missed Kip, wanted the man back in his life, but didn’t know how to make that happen. He didn’t know if Kip would forgive him, and even if the two of them got back together, he didn’t want to keep hiding their relationship.

As he tortured himself with his self-loathing thoughts, he felt a hand touch his shoulder and gave a small startled jump.

“Hey man, sorry about the scare, haha,” Alex greeted Scott with a laugh.

“Hey Alex, it’s been a while since I’ve seen you at these events.”

“Yeah, I’ve been kind of busy with the election campaign and some other things.”

“Do those other things have anything to do with your long-standing friendship with a prince and a toppled cake?”

Alex’s expression changed when he heard Henry mentioned; it seemed to soften, and Scott found that a little strange, but he let it go.

“Ha, I can’t believe you saw that.”

“Of course I did, everyone heard about the supposed fight between the First Son and the Prince of England,” Scott laughed as he spoke. “But honestly, you could tell the news exaggerated what happened. It’s always like that.”

“Yeah, we really did knock over that cake, but it was an accident, and nobody threw punches.”

“But seriously, when I read the news as it kept coming out, I got curious, were you actually long-time friends? Or did you just start saying that to smooth things over? I guess that’s none of my business, right? Forget I asked.” Scott let out a shy laugh, realizing he was asking too many questions.

“No problem, Hunter,” Alex said, a genuine smile forming as he continued. “Henry and I weren’t friends. Actually, we kind of hated each other. We realized it was for pretty stupid reasons, but yeah, I didn’t like the guy much. But after the cake incident, we had to pretend we were friends, and we ended up actually becoming friends. Henry is a lot nicer than I ever imagined.”

The way Alex smiled while talking about the beginning of his friendship with Prince Henry made Scott think for a second that it might be more than just friendship. But that was impossible, right? Scott was probably just going crazy and seeing things where there was nothing to see. Either way, it wasn’t any of Scott’s business.

“I’m glad that, even if not in the most conventional way, you ended up becoming friends. I don’t know much about Henry, but he doesn’t seem like a bad person.”

“He’s one of the most incredible guys I’ve ever met,” Alex said, but then he quickly looked away, seeming embarrassed, and tried to change the subject. “But what about you, man? Sorry, but you don’t seem very well. I’ve never seen you this quiet and alone at an event like this, you’re always talking to someone.”

“Ah… it’s nothing major, just some things going on.” And because Alex had always seemed like a trustworthy person, and Scott was tired and sad, he continued. “I kind of was an asshole to someone important to me.”

Alex fell silent for a moment, as if thinking about what to say.

“Hmm… an asshole how?”

“Our relationship is a secret. No one knows, and no one can know. I wasn’t brave enough for that person, and I’m afraid I may have lost them forever.” Even without telling the whole story, that this person was a man and that it made everything even more complicated, it felt good to vent, at least a little, about what he had been feeling.

“I understand.” For some reason, the way Alex said those few words and looked into his eyes made Scott think that Alex really did understand, as if he wasn’t just saying it for the sake of saying it. “I don’t know how complicated your situation is, but I think that if you and that person truly love each other, you’ll find a way to work things out. It might take time, but even so, I hope everything turns out okay. And I think you should talk to them, it’s the best way to try to fix things.”

“Yeah, I think you’re right. It’s scary, but I don’t want to lose that person. That would be even scarier,” Scott said, and he received an understanding smile from Alex.

For some reason Scott couldn’t quite explain yet, that conversation seemed to bring the two of them closer, and it felt like he and Alex had more in common than he had thought.

...

“…And you made me happy in ways I never thought someone as broken and closed-off as I am could be happy. I loved you. And then, inexplicably, you had the audacity to love me back. Can you believe it? Sometimes, even now, I still can’t.”

That was one of the lines in one of Henry’s emails to Alex.

Scott hadn’t read all the emails, he couldn’t. It was one of the most wrong things someone could do. He wondered how Alex and Henry were doing.

But he had read a few, and my God, he was still in shock. Alex Claremont-Diaz, the First Son of the United States, and Henry, the Prince of England, together? Who would have imagined it? He wished the two men had been able to reveal that news in their own time, and not through their leaked emails. It was horrible, and it was one of the things Scott feared most could happen to him.

That conversation with Alex last month… he had been right, they really did have more in common than Scott had thought. Scott wanted to talk to Alex, to know how he was, how he and Henry were doing, but he didn’t have the First Son’s number and didn’t know how he could get in touch. So he hoped that everything would turn out okay. As Alex had said, if they loved each other, they would find a way to work things out.

He hoped he could run into Alex again, and that when that happened, everything would be okay.

 ...

On the other side of the ballroom were Alex and Henry, and Scott was completely nervous, not knowing how to go talk to them.

It was just another one of the events that Alex and Scott usually attended, but this time Alex had a date, Prince Henry, his boyfriend.

After the whole situation with the leaked emails, Alex had made a statement through a speech saying that the two men were together, and little by little everything had worked itself out. Scott couldn’t imagine what the two of them had gone through, but he had no words to describe how happy he was for them, and the hope he felt for himself.

Before Scott could keep thinking about how to approach the two men, Alex turned and caught the player’s eye, smiling and pulling the prince toward where he was standing.

“Scott!! Long time, man!” Alex exclaimed as he pulled Hunter into a tight hug.

“Alex!” Scott said as soon as he pulled away from the hug and turned to Henry, not knowing what to say.

“This is Henry,” Alex said, turning to him and smiling even wider. “My boyfriend.”

“Your Highness…” Scott was completely awkward. How were you supposed to talk to a prince?

“Just Henry, please.”

“Henry… it’s a pleasure to meet you,” Scott said, smiling as he shook his hand.

“How are you doing, man?” Alex asked.

“Things are going, nothing new, and you guys?” Scott said a little hesitantly, not sure if he was making the conversation uncomfortable.

“It’s been a rough couple of months,” Alex said with a sigh, but then he smiled and reached out to take Henry’s hand. “But now everything’s okay.”

“Yes, it was complicated, but we made it through,” Henry added, squeezing Alex’s hand even tighter.

Scott wanted that. He wanted to introduce Kip as his boyfriend to people, especially to his friends. He wanted to hold his hand. He wanted to be able to say that everything was okay.

“What you did was incredible,” Scott began, already feeling his eyes start to fill with tears. “Your conversations shouldn’t have been leaked, that’s not how it should have happened. You should’ve been able to tell people in your own time, but… but what you did was incredible.”

The two men standing in front of Scott smiled as they listened to the player speak.

“It mattered. It gave courage and hope to a lot of people.” Scott paused, taking a deep breath before continuing. “It mattered to me.”

He saw the moment when Alex and Henry seemed to understand exactly what Scott was talking about, and both of them looked like they were about to cry, just like Scott.

“Ah, man!” Alex pulled him into another tight hug, thanking him and saying that everything would be okay.

As soon as the First Son stepped back, Scott didn’t even have time to think before Henry wrapped him in a tight hug as well.

“We’re rooting for you, Scott, and if you need anything, know that you can count on us,” Henry said as Alex nodded in agreement.

For the rest of the night, the three men kept talking and exchanged numbers.

Alex and Henry had made history, and Scott thought it was time for him to make history too.

...

“Wow, he really does look even hotter,” Henry commented as Alex went to grab two more beers for them.

“I told you! The guy is already hot, and then when he’s playing hockey he somehow gets even hotter, it’s unreal,” Alex said as he flopped onto the couch, handing one of the drinks to Henry.

“I was kind of flustered when you introduced me to him at that event.”

“Okay, I think that’s enough talking about how attractive Scott Hunter is,” Alex said, pretending to be sulky. “I’m hotter than him anyway.”

“Of course, love, you’re the most handsome man there is,” Henry said with a goofy smile as he placed a kiss on the man’s cheek.

They pulled apart as the game came to an end, confirming the Admirals’ victory.

“I told you they were going to win!” Alex cheered. “Scott deserves it.”

They both watched as Hunter took the trophy they had won and celebrated with his team. The crowd roared, the players hugged, and soon family members began to step onto the ice.

“Hunter is looking toward the stands… it seems like he’s calling someone… some very lucky fan appears to be being invited onto the ice,” the commentator said, as Alex and Henry looked at each other in confusion and curiosity.

The camera focuses on a man walking down the steps of the stands as Scott skates toward him. He helps the man onto the ice and pulls him a little farther toward the center.

“What is he doing…?” Henry asks, and before Alex can say anything, Scott cups the man’s face and kisses him, right in front of the entire crowd. In front of his whole team. In front of everyone.

Alex and Henry smile at each other, and the moment Scott wraps his arms around the man he loves, the two of them do the same.

“We all made history,” Alex says, kissing Henry and smiling as he continues to watch the two men on television.

...

A few weeks later, Scott receives three messages.

From Alex
Dude, big news! Henry and I are moving to Brooklyn! You and Kip live there, right? We need to get together! Henry and I want to meet your man!!!

From Shane
Hi Scott, it’s Shane. Sorry for texting out of the blue. I didn’t get a chance to talk to you, but I wanted to say that what you did was very brave,it was incredible and really important. It was really important to me. You gave us hope! Thank you! Maybe we could meet up sometime? Let me know what you think!

From Ilya
It’s Ilya.
You’re already too old for hockey.
But thank you.
What you did was very important.
It was very important to me and to him.
Let’s have dinner together sometime.

Scott can only feel an overwhelming happiness, even with Rozanov calling him old.

Alex and Henry made history together. He and Kip made history together. And maybe more people, including two more hockey players, will make more history too.

Scott thinks that representation is one of the most important things there is, and he’s happy to be able to be part of it.

He thinks it would be really nice if the six of them could all meet someday.
