The Risks We Know

Summary:

“I’m no longer a virgin.”

Silence.

Both women stared at him.

Victoria’s mouth fell open first. Trinity’s followed half a second later.

Then Victoria grinned, shot her hand out, and smacked his in a sharp high five. “About damn time.”

“Fuck yeah!” Trinity crowed—then immediately sobered, eyes narrowing. “You used protection, right?”

Work Text:

Dennis lay on his back in the narrow on-call bed, staring up at the ceiling tiles like they might rearrange themselves into something that made sense.

Beside him, Robby was still catching his breath.

The room was quiet except for the hum of the lights and the sound of their breathing—too loud, too fast. Dennis’s chest rose and fell rapidly, his fingers curling into the sheet at his side as the weight of what they’d just done settled over him in delayed, dizzy waves.

Robby shifted slightly, turning his head toward Dennis, eyes wide and a little disbelieving.

“Did we just—” Robby started, then stopped, exhaling a shaky laugh.

Dennis swallowed, voice breathless. “We did.”

They lay there for a moment longer, shoulder to shoulder, neither quite ready to move, neither quite ready to laugh about it yet. Dennis could still feel the warmth of Robby beside him, grounding and unreal all at once. His heart wouldn’t slow down.

Then—

BZZZT.

Robby’s pager went off.

They both groaned.

Robby scrubbed a hand over his face and rolled onto his side, reluctantly pushing himself upright. “You’ve gotta be kidding me,” he muttered. He swung his legs off the bed, already slipping back into doctor-mode even though annoyance flickered plainly across his face.

Dennis watched him dress, still dazed, still flushed, still very much aware that thirty minutes ago his life had been entirely theoretical. Guidelines. Textbooks. Warnings. Do not screw your boss.

And now—

Robby pulled his shirt on, paused, and looked back at him. There was something fond and almost irritated in his expression, like he resented the universe for pulling him away. “We can talk about this later,” he said, softer.

Then he was gone, door clicking shut behind him.

Dennis lay there for another second, breathing rapidly, before forcing himself up. He dressed just as quickly, shoving his shirt over his head, hands trembling in a way he’d never let a patient see.

Oh my god, he thought, dragging a hand through his hair.
Oh my god, I just fucked my boss.

He left the room not long after, still flushed, still breathing a little too fast, and wandered with purpose he didn’t quite have until he spotted Trinity at the reception desk, sprawled comfortably like she owned the place. Victoria sat beside her, flipping through a stack of files.

Dennis approached and… stopped.

They both looked up at him at the same time.

“Why do you look like you just ran a marathon?” Victoria asked.

“And lost.” Trinity added with a chuckle.

Dennis glanced over his shoulder, scanning the hallway. Clear. No Robby. He leaned in and dropped his voice to a whisper that buzzed with barely contained giddiness.

Dennis’s smile froze.

The silence that followed was worse.

“What?” Victoria hissed.

Trinity slowly pushed herself upright. “Dennis.”

“I—” He swallowed. “It was—things happened fast.”

“Oh my god,” Victoria whispered, scandalized. “Dennis.”

Trinity grabbed his arm and forcibly sat him down in her chair. “You are twenty-something years old and a doctor.”

“You work in a hospital,” Victoria added.

“You counsel patients on this,” Trinity continued.

“You know the risks,” Victoria piled on.

Dennis shrank a little with every word, shoulders curling inward, cheeks burning. “I know,” he muttered. “I just—he—”

Five minutes later, it was still happening.

“And don’t even get me started on STI screening,” Trinity said.

“We are literally surrounded by condoms,” Victoria emphasized.

Dennis stared at the floor like it might open up and swallow him whole.

That’s when footsteps slowed nearby.

Robby and Frank passed the desk, papers tucked under their arms. Frank stopped first, brow furrowing. “Why are you both yelling at Dennis?”

Robby followed his gaze—and immediately clocked Dennis’s expression. The flush. The posture. The way Trinity was standing over him like an angry parent.

Robby’s lips twitched.

He met Dennis’s eyes.

Dennis looked like he might actually die.

Robby chuckled softly, warmth and something unmistakably fond in his gaze, then nudged Frank forward with his shoulder. “Lets go,” he murmured.

Frank blinked, confused, but kept walking.

Robby didn’t look back—but Dennis felt the grin he left behind.

And somehow, despite the lecture, despite the embarrassment, Dennis smiled—

—Just for Trinity to yell out “You think this is funny?!”
