“Sad,” Grace agrees, fiddling with the microscope, mostly just to keep his hands busy. “But I have a–”
He stops, hands frozen in place on the cold, intricate metal.
“I, uhm…” He tries again. His voice gives out, fading in a whisper.
It's been a while since he's last done this. He used to catch himself on it all the time, the words spilling out before he had the chance to think. For a scientist, his heart always seemed to outrun his brain.
“I… Had a brother,” he managed, finally. There’s already something hot and wet gathering behind his eyes, and he quickly tries to blink it away. He was never really good at that. “His name was Colt. Gee, sorry. Bit of a rough topic, Rock.”
