Chapter 1: a chance to be social

Chapter Text

Izuku woke up before his alarm. His wide eyes blinked open as his body jump started for the day. He sat up, his shoulders doing a little shimmy as he squealed.

“Today’s the day,” he said.

Sliding out of his bed, he slipped into his slippers and made his way to the balcony attached to his bedroom. It was dark outside, the sun barely peaking over the horizon, but Izuku believed it was the best time of day. He grabbed the box of cigarettes sitting along the rail and pulled one out with his fingers. Smoking was a habit he’d never been ashamed of, but he could only find solace in the earliest hours of the day. His parents would have his head if they ever found out.

Taking the lighter from his right, he lit the cigarette and took a long drawl. He had to be efficient. One of the maids would come knocking soon and he’d hate to convince them to keep his secret. He took another long drawl, the nicotine burning in a pleasant way. Flicking off the ash, he put it out, determined to finish it off later in the evening when everyone in the house was dead to the world.

Just as he shut the balcony door, a firm knock rattled against his bedroom door.

“Young Midoriya, it is time for you to get ready for your first day of school,” Ayame called. She was a sweet, older woman with dark hair and kind eyes. Izuku always admired her for working under his parents for so long. He tried to be as pleasant as possible whenever in her presence.

He opened his bedroom door a crack and offered the woman a smile.

“Thank you, Ayame,” he said. “I’ll be down for breakfast shortly.”

The woman bowed before leaving Izuku to prepare himself.

He rushed to the bathroom to get ready. He had showered the night prior, so all he had to do was fix his hair and apply some light makeup. He quickly brushed his teeth and cleaned his skin before meticulously plucking each roller from his hair. The green curls were untameable on the best of days, but giving them some structure always made him look presentable.

When all the curlers were out, Izuku shuffled back into the bedroom and plopped down in front of his vanity. He hummed as he dotted concealer under his eyes and blush atop his cheeks. He was sure to keep his freckles clear. His father always said they enhanced his childlike helplessness, a trait wealthy alphas loved to exploit. He lifted his lashes with mascara and finished with a smooth layer of gloss over his lips. He smiled at himself in the mirror; a genuine smile full of teeth and excitement.

His uniform had already been laid out the night before: a dark navy sweater with a deep v-cut, a white blouse to go underneath, and a crisp red tie to go around his neck. Male omegas were allowed to wear pants or skirts similar to female alphas, and he had purchased both when informed about his schooling. For today he decided on a plaid patterned skirt with tall white socks with bows on the top. He was careful when putting everything on, not wanting to ruin his hair.

With a final look in his full body mirror, Izuku smiled once more. He looked like a real student. He grabbed his school bag from the hook by the door and made his way to the kitchen. He could already smell Ayame’s cooking.

“Breakfast smells lovely, Ayame,” he said as he sat at the large kitchen island, setting the bag beside him. There was a large stove on the island, and behind it was Ayame scrambling eggs and slicing meat.

“It will be done shortly,” she said. “You must eat quickly so you’re not late. Do you have your class schedule and all your supplies?”

“Yes.” He patted the bag. “I’m excited to see what real school is like.”

Ayame smiled. “I’m sure you’ll love it. It’ll be good for you to be around peers your age.”

“I just hope they like me.”

He watched as Ayame plated his food. Rice with an egg and sausages. She slid a biscuit his way as well, slathered with a sweet jam he loved.  Izuku grabbed his chopsticks and dug in.

“I'm sure you’ll make plenty of friends,” she said. “Now hurry. Dan is waiting out front with the car.”

Izuku scrambled to shove food in his mouth, not wanting to keep the kind man waiting on him for long.

–––

Katsuki scowled as he leaned against the front of the school. He looked down at his watch, the hands steadily ticking, yet there was still no sign of his idiotic friend. His three other idiots were gathered around waiting with him. They always met at the front of the school. Always.

“I’m sure he’ll be here soon, Kats,” Eijiro said from his spot leaning against the stone stairwell. “You know how Denki operates.”

“He’s the one who needs help with his math work, so he’s the one who should know how to read a fucking clock.” Katsuki huffed. “‘Sides, what if I had better things to do this morning?”

Mina snorted, the smoke from her cigarette spilling out her mouth in grey clouds.

“Like what?” she asked.

“Mind your own fucking business, Pinky,” Katsuki yelled. “I’m done. I have to grab something out of my locker anyway.”

“Let’s just give him a couple more minutes,” Sero, the unfortunate voice of reason, said. “Maybe he locked himself out again and he’s just now figuring out how to break into his own house.”

“The fact that has happened twice should be enough,” Eijiro said, raising his shoulders. “Then again, maybe it needs to happen three times just to ensure he learns where he went wrong.”

“He should have fucking learned the first time,” Katuski shouted. He pressed his fingers into his forehead, careful to avoid his perfectly spiked hair. Despite his personality, he had a reputation to uphold. “You fuckers better not be late for homeroom or I swear–”

Before he could cuss them to Sunday, something fresh and sweet hit his nose. His eyes darted around, his mind forgetting the idiots in front of him as he searched.

“Thank you, Dan,” said the smoothest voice the blond had ever heard. “I’ll meet you here when school lets out.”

The car was right in front of him; an all black vehicle with a long front and back. Katsuki’s vision zeroed in on the person closing the back door. Fluffy green curls kissed the back of their neck and smooth legs spilled out of a skirt Katsuki knew pushed the dress-code. When the person turned, Katsuki sucked in a breath. He was beautiful

His face was angular yet his cheeks held subtle softness. He had freckles, the cutest freckles that spotted his nose and danced across his rosy cheeks, and his eyes. Holy fuck, Katsuki felt like he was looking at two of the finest emerald the world had ever discovered.

The boy approached the steps, his scent hitting the blond at full force. Brown sugar and chamomile. Katsuki’s mouth salivated after one whiff. Their eyes met. Katsuki wasn’t sure what he himself looked like, but rosy cheeks only got redder and green eyes shifted away quickly.

As soon as the boy passed, Katsuki felt like a fog had passed through his brain.

“Dude, what the fuck was that?”

“Where the hell have you been?” The fog was gone leaving Katsuki to focus on the sudden appearance of Denki. “Homeroom is about to start, like hell we’ll have time to do your fucking math homework.”

“Chill, Katsu-man, I did it this morning on the toilet,” Denki said. “That’s why I was so behind. Massive shit, but I’m glad it passed.”

“Get the fuck away from me.”

“I think we need to talk about what just happened,” Mina said, smiling. She had put out her cigarette and bounded over to the spiky-haired blond. “You’re totally in love with that guy!”

“The fuck, I don’t even know him!” Katsuki refused to admit anything. He could feel heat climbing up his neck as he thought about bouncy green curls or lightly reddened cheeks.

“Look at you, you’re thinking about him right now!” Mina squealed.

“I wonder why he wasn’t wearing blockers,” Sero said, his nose moving on its own to smell the faint smell left behind. “I’ve never seen him around here before.”

“Must be new.” Eijiro shrugged.

Katsuki sucked his teeth. “As if I’d care. C’mon, I’m not going to be late cause of you fucks.”

Hiking his bag higher on his shoulder, Katsuki moved towards the stairs, completely ignoring the knowing snickers and whispers from the gang of idiots behind him.
