Chapter 1: Dednarts

Chapter Text

Adlaremse lays in her cot, looking out the window.

On nights like these, she’d usually be out, roaming Transylvania in her more flexible, indistinguishable form. Yet instead, here she was, laying awake as her lover, Ybbob, slept in the chair next to her. Useless man, she thought. Unable to help or comfort his wife in a time of need? He was still adjusting back from the humans diurnal schedules, and constantly fell asleep at this hour. Adla would’ve slapped him awake if she was not hospitalized.

One of their hand servants, who was doing their best to perform as a doctor, entered the room. He hums, a low gravelly sound in his throat, and lifts her blanket to examine the injuries.

“Recovering well, Lady Adlaremse?”

“No,” she scoffs. Despite her almost fatal injuries, she found no reason to act demure. “If only Ybbob would wake up and show a bit of compassion for his dying wife!”

She was not dying. She and everyone else knew that – even Ybbob, despite his dull witted head. That amateur spike that had plunged into her chest was bronze, not silver, and did practically nothing. Now she understood why it was “Sammie’s” part time job.

Adla did not know where the girl had gone after she had made an attempt on her life. She knew the girl lived in North America, but humans did not have wings, did they? Perhaps she was roaming around Europe, looking to find her next victim to slightly injure.

She couldn’t say that she didn’t wish to see Sammie once more. Perhaps it was foolish, but with her snoring husband (not even in bat form) next to her, was it wrong?

“My Lady!” The servant's scratchy voice pipes up, his shoulders tense and his hands curled in front of him. She snaps back to her senses, and huffs. “I-I do not wish to disturb your daydreaming, but perhaps we should perform another check up? I’m s-sure you’ll be in tip top shape in only a matter of nights!”

She nodded, and adjusted herself. She pouts, sat up in her cot and glaring at her husband. Foolish man.

Another check up starts.

———————————

Sammie grunted as she ran down the mountain of the vampire couples castle. Getting caught and trapped in the dark trees and bushes over and over again, she decides to rest up in the forest. She rested next to a tree, one that practically embraced her with its vines and branches. She opens her backpack, and pulls out her bronze stake.

The wind rushed through and down her spine, giving her the same chills her guilt gave her. She held the blood stained stake to her chest, still panting from the run. Bats and owls flew past her, and one owl even decided to sit on a branch, not far from her.

“What do you want?” She mumbles, eyeing the creature. It’s like the thing knew of every bad deed she’d ever committed in detail, and it freaked her out. She would’ve tried to kill it for food, if she didn’t feel guilty enough as is. She looks down at her stake, looking at her reflection. Why are you so stupid, she asks herself. Stabbing a whole vampire, when she had only started the job a week ago? All they had given her was a bronze stake – not enough to kill a whole vampire woman. Esmeralda was probably hunting her down to kill her after betraying her trust like that! But… she would’ve been terrified, anyway.

She had judged Bobby for being so fragile and stupid, but in truth, she might’ve been projecting. The minute someone bothers to give her a chance – a cute vampire, at that! – she tries to kill them and runs away. What kind of loser was she!?

Hoot, hoot. The owl calls out to her, and she looks back up at it. Her eyes narrow, and she turns towards the castle she had run from. The moon was lit, and she and the owl both knew: she wasn’t going to make any progress getting home for a while.
