Summary
Mike watches his best friend’s face as he struggles beside him. With every step, Will’s brows pinch ever so slightly together, his eyes squinting tightly into thin lines. Undoubtedly hurting, Will lets out small gasps of air through his teeth, deep groans accompanying them in order to ease the pain in any way he can. The sight of it causes a deep–rooted anxiety to flourish in Mike’s chest, a ‘What if?’ repeating inside of his head.
What if Will doesn’t make it?
What if us killing the hivemind kills him?
What if I lose them both tonight?The last thought does way more harm than the others, a thought that hasn’t truly left him since the bomb went off, a reminder that he already lost one of the most important people in his life today. A reminder that if Will doesn’t make it through this, Mike will be truly, completely alone.

Following Mike through the years after the Upsidedown gets destroyed, seeing how he comes to terms with his complicated view on grief over the loss of El. He finds comfort in Will, unraveling a slew of emotions and feelings that have been so long repressed, as he battles with not being ready to confront that part of himself just yet.
