    Back on shore, vassal citizen Sycamore Maple sits on the dock and stares at the sunset. The water is blood red from a toxic algal bloom. She sips from a flask of herbal liquor and stares at a picture of her and her fiance, the last picture they took before deployment. Maple's beloved Lieutenant Intelligence Officer and naturalized citizen Theian Techne is somewhere far, far away, under the waves, preserving the life and liberty of the free world.
    On her way home, Maple kneels at a wild shrine, tucked away in an alley. She pours out a measure of liquor as an offering, wetting the barely shaped stone of a local spirit. Please, she whispers under her breath, preserve my beloved. Keep her safe. Bring her back to me as I remember her. I can't lose her again.

    Under the ocean, a Lieutenant Intelligence Officer forgets her name for the third time. Her handler shrugs and decides it would be easiest to not remind her.
