Work Text:
“Mercury?” Tim guessed. Jay squinted his eyes and rubbed his face out of frustration. He had been here for over an hour, and Tim still didn’t understand basic chemistry. Er, maybe not basic.
“Tim,” Jay huffed out a shaky breath, “What is the elemental symbol for Mercury, hm?” His anger was beginning to show slightly through his words.
“I don’t know, Mc?” Tim shrugged. He sucked at chemistry. Honestly, why did he even need to take chemistry? He was a music major, not a damn scientist. Jay seemed to know everything about everything. Including chemistry. It was stupid.
“No!-no, Tim.” Jay glared at him, trying to keep his voice down. Come on though, elemental symbols were easy. That was like…sixth grade science.
“Mc is moscovium, which is nothing like mercury. Mercury is Hg. Look,” He pointed towards the study guide, “If this gives you this, then you use this equation to subtract the other chemicals from the product. Does that make any sense?” Tim stared down cluelessly at the paper. He groaned, running a hand through his hair angrily.
“I don’t-I don’t understand that. If you get rid of this, how would it…what?” He was tapping his foot aggressively against the carpet. Jay swallowed. He kept forgetting about the fact that he was kind of smart. Whenever it came to other people, he would normally be quick to surpass them. But, that normally made him feel proud. Now, he felt guilty.
“Hey, just calm down. I didn’t mean to be all weird about it, I just…I’m not a good teacher,” Jay glanced over at Tim. Tim put a hand up and waved him off.
“I’m serious! I know all of this stuff, but I can’t teach it. I always just end up getting pissed off, it’s stupid.” Jay put the study guide back into Tim’s bag, “Let’s just take a break for a minute, okay? Maybe some water’ll help?” He stood up, not waiting for an answer. He was already speeding off to Tim’s kitchen.
Jay felt bad. He felt guilty, actually. Was he pushing Tim too hard? This seemed more simple than Tim was making it out to be. He remembers whenever he had first started film class. He didn’t know how to use f-stop properly, and god if that didn’t irritate him. It also irritated his classmates. They acted the same way Jay was acting now. When they started studying again, Jay would be more careful.
Tim chewed on the side of his lip. How did he not understand this? Jay acted like it was so simple. He should’ve been a scientist, not a videographer, Tim thinks as Jay returns with a bottle of water. Jay hands it to Tim and takes his place back on the couch. Tim took notice of the way their shoulders touched. Okay, to be completely honest, Tim hadn't invited Jay over just to study. He liked Jay. Like, a lot. He liked his dorky little smile, his sweet voice, even the way he acted when he was agitated seemed to do him in. But…he was always too scared to shoot his shot. He knew Jay was queer. That wasn’t the problem. The problem was getting Jay to like him. The way Jay was around Alex scared Tim. They were so close, but Alex had a girlfriend. Tim huffs as he sips on his water.
“Sorry, I know chemistry is pretty hard,” Jay says.
“Oh, right. Mr. 4.3 GPA over here,” Tim playfully nudges him with his elbow. Jay smiles.
“Do you wanna do anything other than sit around?”
“Hm, anything like what?” Tim narrows his eyes at Jay. Jay smirks at him.
“Anything you want. This is your house,” Jay had taken on a different demeanor. Holy shit, Tim thinks. His face flushes with heat.
“Anything?” Tim mocked.
“Anything. I don’t care, I’m simple to please,” Fucking hell, Jay Merrick. Jay knew exactly what he was doing, didn’t he? “Simple to please” Oh, come on. This could be it, Tim thinks. Was this flirting? It felt like flirting. Better to take a hold of the opportunity than let it die. Tim put his hands behind his head and readjusted his hips. Jay was trying to suppress a grin.
Jay wasn’t exactly flirty, ever. He just said things and took note of how people reacted. He had a friend in middle school who used to pretend to date him when they hung out as a learning experience. She was a lesbian, for note. They would practice flirting with each other. Once, and once only, they had tried kissing. They both hated it. Too icky to do it with each other. But now, Jay felt a strong urge to kiss Tim.
“Anything?” Tim drug his syllables out. Jay rolled his eyes. He watched as Tim moved again, but it was only his chest rising and falling from breathing. As Jay watched his chest move, he couldn't help but let his eyes wander. Tim gulped slightly at this. Oh my god, this could be it.
“I said anything, didn’t I?” Jay bats his eyes at Tim. They had somehow moved closer to one another.
“So, if I told you that I wanted you to get on your knees in front of me, you would do it?” Tim blinks. His nerves get a hold of him. Had he really said that? Out loud? But, before he can freak out any further, Jay’s giggling. He stops abruptly, regaining his composure.
“When you say that, what are you implying by ‘getting on my knees’?” He asks.
“Are you implying you’d do it?”
“Are you implying that you’d want me to?”
“Maybe I am.”
“Well, maybe I am too,” Jay crosses his arms defiantly. Tim smirks.
“Come here, then, if you’re true to your words,” He pats his lap twice. His voice had a silky tone Jay had yet to hear. He plans on saying something, something flirty, something snarky, but he can’t get his words out. That was fuckin’ hot. He lets a nervous laugh out, but Tim shakes his head.
“I’m just messing, let’s watch a movie or something,” He sits back up straight, Jay losing his sight of Tim’s full body. He fights back a huff or disappointment.
“Heh, right.” Jay says in reply. Tim reached across Jay’s body, grabbing the TV remote.
Would he have liked that? To sit in between his friend’s–who he was supposed to be tutoring, mind you–legs? Oh, just thinking about it is making him shudder. He wipes his hands down his face. It wasn’t a bad thought. Tim was fairly attractive. Honestly, Jay would’ve liked to go down on him right here right now, but that didn’t seem to be an option right now. Tim was probably just joking, but then again, was he? He seemed pretty into the bit. His face was red even now, as he scrolled through the channels.
Tim swallowed down his nerves. No way in hell was Jay joking. Not with how he was sitting, how he was speaking, his body language. Next time this happened, Tim would not freak out like that. But, Jay seemed nervous. Besides, take a man to dinner first? Tim laughs at that thought, causing Jay to turn and look at him.
“What?” He asks, a stupid grin on his face.
“Oh, nothing. It’s stupid.” Tim eyes Jay’s lips. He really wanted to kiss him. Fuck, he needed to stop. But, he couldn’t. His eyes fleet back up to meet Jay’s eyes, who seems to be thinking the same thing. Jay leans in slightly, not going too far as to imply anything, but going far enough that it was obvious to someone who was thinking the same. Tim leans in as well, and before he knew it, they were kissing. It wasn’t bad, no. But, he was kissing Jay. He puts a hand on the side of Jay’s face, pulling him closer. He was so warm.
Jay can’t believe it. Here he is, kissing Tim Wright in his apartment. Wasn’t he supposed to be teaching him chemistry? But, this was so much better than chemistry. He pulls away first, looking for any sign of discomfort on Tim’s face.
“Fuck, you’re amazing,” Tim breathes out. Jay snickers as he leans back in for another kiss. This went on for a while, occasional short break-aways for breathing. Jay had somehow climbed into Tim’s lap. He doesn’t remember doing this.
“Mmm, Tim?” Jay murmurs.
“What?” Tim is trying to kiss him again, but Jay shakes his head.
“Are you doing this because it means something, or because you’re bored? Because if it’s the second option, I should go.” Jay says. Oh, no. Tim furrows his brows. He rubs his hands down the length of Jay’s back.
“Jay, this means everything to me. I’ve liked you since we first started filming. I always thought you had a thing for Alex, so that's why I stayed away.” Jay recoils at this.
“Ew, no. He is not boyfriend material,” He’s smiling now, leaning back in for a kiss, “You are though,” He whispers against Tim’s lips. Tim groans softly, pulling Jay against him by his back.
Tim prays that Brian doesn’t come back anytime soon.
