Everything Has Changed

Summary:

Shane flees, terrified that Ilya might feel more for him after knotting him for the first time. It's just his luck to then find out that he's pregnant.

Work Text:

Shane knew something had changed between them that day at Rozanov’s house. He’d called him Ilya. Rozanov had called him Shane. And Shane had been knotted for the first time in his life. There weren’t the words to describe how amazing it felt but Shane had panicked. As soon as the alpha’s knot had deflated, he was dressed and out of the door. Shane was terrified. He knew it was no longer just sex, at least, not for him. The feelings he had for Rozanov had been getting stronger the longer they hooked up and Shane knew he couldn’t keep lying to himself. He was in love with the Russian alpha. But how did Rozanov feel about him? Shane had no idea.

It shouldn’t have come as a shock to him when he started feeling ill a few weeks later. He hadn’t spoken to the alpha since, in person or through texts. He’d started dating Rose Landry for fuck’s sake. Now was not the time to find out he was pregnant. But there it was, written in English on the test. Pregnant. Shane had to take a few calming breaths. He wasn’t really sure where to go from here but he knew he wanted to keep this baby. It meant he would have to come clean to Rose, to his parents, to his team. Hell, he would have to tell the whole world that he was an omega. Shane was absolutely fucking terrified but he was also kind of excited. A baby that was part him and part of the alpha he loved.

He went out for dinner that night with Rose and it went as well as it possibly could. She knew he was an omega so it hadn’t come as too much of a surprise when he confessed about ‘his’ alpha. Rose was happy for him, she had realised that their relationship wasn’t going to work out but she still wanted to be his friend. He could really do with one of those right now. “I’m pregnant.” Shane admitted.

“How do you feel about that?” Rose asked, leaning across the table to hold his hands.

“I’m keeping it. It’s probably a bad idea but I know now, I know I’m in love with him and there’s no way I’m getting rid of it.” Shane explained.

“You don’t owe me an explanation.” Rose assured.

“I kind of feel like I do.” Shane said.

“You don’t owe anybody anything.” Rose told him. Shane had to admit, he felt better for getting it off his chest. Someone knowing about the baby made him feel lighter in a way he hadn’t thought was possible until the words had spilled out of his mouth.

Once dinner was over, Shane and Rose headed outside since the actress's car had arrived. “You’re gonna wish you’d never met me.” Rose smirked as she gave him a tight hug.

“Not possible.” Shane smiled, watching her walk away. Having someone in his corner made him feel a lot better. He was still terrified to tell his parents. He was even more terrified to tell Ilya but knowing someone supported him was definitely going to help.

“Shane? We weren’t expecting to see you today.” Yuna smiled as her only child walked through the door. She walked over to pull him into a hug and Shane just melted. He knew his parents would love and support him regardless and he fully intended to return to hockey as soon as the baby was here but he was still likely to need to take the whole year off.

“There’s something I need to tell you guys.” Shane said. Yuna led him over to the couch and David joined them both there.

“We’re all ears, honey.” Yuna said, reassuringly.

“I’m pregnant.” Shane told them, taking the pregnancy test out of his pocket. He still needed to make an appointment with his doctor but he didn’t want to have to face that alone. He didn’t know when he was going to get the chance to tell Ilya considering he would be benched the moment he told the Metros coach about the baby.

“I didn’t know you were seeing an alpha? I thought you were dating Rose Landry?” David queried.

“I tried. Tried to date Rose but she’s not him. No one will ever be him.” Shane confessed, tears starting to fall down his cheeks.

“Who?” Yuna asked, hating to see their son like this.

“I will tell you, just not yet. I still need to tell him about the baby.” Shane said.

“We didn’t know you were seeing an alpha.” Yuna repeated.

“I’m not. We weren’t together. It was just- you know. But I love him and I hope he feels the same.” Shane explained. He didn’t really want to tell his parents that he and Ilya had just been fucking but he couldn’t lie to them and tell them he was in a relationship when he wasn’t. He had no idea how Ilya was going to respond. He might want nothing to do with Shane and the baby. In fact, that's what Shane was expecting to happen but he knew they had both felt it that day at Ilya’s house. Ilya had been the one to call him Shane first, after all.

“What’s the plan?” Yuna asked, trying not to pry. She wanted to know everything that had led Shane here but he clearly wasn’t ready. It broke her heart to think Shane had fallen in love with an alpha that only wanted him for the physical act. But it was Shane’s choice.

“Well, I’m going to have to take some time off. I was hoping to play the All-Star game first. It’s not as risky as a usual match but I still understand that it’s not a great idea. I need to see what Doctor Bouchard says. I need to tell the alpha.” Shane listed.

“You haven’t been to see Doctor Bouchard yet?” Yuna checked.

“I know, Mom. I’m going to, just give me a chance. I found out about the baby like two days ago. I haven't had much chance to wrap my head around it yet.” Shane defended.

“I’m not trying to criticise.” Yuna said.

“I know I’m a mess.” Shane sobbed. He ended up with Yuna on one side and David on the other, just holding him as he sobbed. Things weren’t going to get any easier than this.

Sitting in Doctor Bouchard’s waiting room was a horrible experience. Shane had never really minded going to see a doctor, it was par for the course when you played a contact sport like hockey but this had very little to do with hockey. If you didn’t count the fact that that’s how he and Ilya met and still continued to play the sport. Shane jumped out of his seat when his name was finally called, he’d been in his head far too deep.

“Mr Hollander, this is a surprise. I wasn’t expecting to see you yet. You’re not due to see me until July.” Doctor Bouchard said.

“Yeah, I, uh, I’m pregnant.” Shane mumbled.

“Congratulations.” Doctor Bouchard smiled.

“Thanks.” Shane said.

“So, we have a lot to go over then.”

“I think so.” Shane agreed.

“I have some questions to ask you first, then I’ll take a blood sample and weigh you before you can hop on the bed and get a look at the little one.” Doctor Bouchard explained, knowing Shane liked to know what was going to happen next. Shane nodded in agreement so she started asking questions. They were relatively easy questions, mostly about himself and his wellbeing as well as family history. Shane had no idea what to answer on Ilya’s behalf. He didn’t know anything about the alpha’s family although he knew they didn’t have an easy relationship. It was nothing like the one he had with Yuna and David, that was for sure. Even if Ilya wanted nothing to do with Shane or their baby, there were still questions that Shane needed answering.

Once all of the necessities were over, Shane found himself getting quite excited at the thought of getting to see their baby for the first time. He just wished Ilya was here to share it with him. Maybe next time. “There’s your little one.” Doctor Bouchard pointed out. Shane couldn’t help the tears that fell.

“They’re tiny.” Shane chuckled, wetly.

“You’re only about seven weeks along.” Doctor Bouchard said. “So they’re only as big as a blueberry right now.”

“My little blueberry.” Shane smiled.

“I need to wait for the blood work to come back but they look good. Does seven weeks sound about right based on when you think they were conceived?” Doctor Bouchard checked.

“Yeah, it would’ve been about three or four weeks ago. I know pregnancy is calculated differently.” Shane confirmed.

“Is there anything you want to ask before I let you go?”

“I know I can’t play professionally until after the baby is born but I wanted to ask if it would be okay for me to still play the All-Star match in January? It’s less risky than a professional match.” Shane queried.

“I would advise against it but I can’t stop you. If you think it’s okay to play then you are allowed to assess the risk and make your own decision.” Doctor Bouchard said. Shane could tell from the tone of her voice that she really didn’t want him to but she hadn’t said no and Shane was going to cling to that.

It wasn’t easy to keep his pregnancy to himself. He’d managed to tell the Metros that he had an injury and that was why he couldn’t play at the moment but keeping the baby to himself for another month before he could tell Ilya wasn’t easy for him. Shane relied heavily on his parents and Rose to stop him from going crazy. There was nothing he wanted more than to see Ilya again but considering how things had gone that night at the club, he didn’t think the Russian alpha would take kindly to Shane just getting on a flight to Boston and showing up at his door. He still had no idea if Ilya would even want to talk to him when he got to Tampa but Shane had to try.

Shane was now ten weeks pregnant and it was going to get harder to hide his symptoms when surrounded by so many of his fellow players but since Ilya and Hayden were the only ones that knew he was an omega, the rest of them were less likely to put his symptoms together and come to the conclusion that he’d been knocked up. The nausea was annoying but he could deal with it. Shane had always loved ginger ale but now it was his best friend.

Ilya was making fun of him, for more reasons than one right now and Shane found he didn’t mind. It was good to be easing back into a camaraderie with the alpha whose baby he was currently carrying, although if Ilya suspected anything then he kept it to himself. It made Shane’s heart melt to watch him playing in the pool with all of the kids while Shane was sunbathing. He really just wanted to be wherever Ilya was.

It didn’t take long for them to gravitate back towards each other. Shane had known it wouldn’t, especially since he’d told Ilya that there was nothing going on between him and Rose but he’d still been a little surprised to end up in the alpha’s hotel room so quickly. There was nothing Shane wanted more than to kiss Ilya and lose himself in getting fucked but they needed to have an important conversation first.

“This looks serious.” Ilya remarked as Shane sat down on the bed, without kissing him first.

“Yeah, it is.” Shane agreed.

“You smell different.” Ilya stated, moving to sit next to the omega on the bed. Shane didn’t know if he preferred Ilya being this close or if he wanted him further away for this.

“Yeah, I know.” Shane said.

“You smell…” Ilya trailed off, his eyes widening.

“I smell pregnant?” Shane guessed. Ilya could only nod in response. “Because I am.”

“You’re…”

“Yeah.” Shane said with a shy smile. “We’re having a baby.”

“Shane…” Ilya breathed. Shane moved so that he was straddling the alpha and just wrapped his arms around the alpha’s neck. Ilya buried his own face in Shane’s neck and began to scent the omega. “Ya tebya lyublyu. I love you.”

“I love you, too. Have for a while now.” Shane replied.

“Why did you run?”

“Because I was scared. This was supposed to be just sex. You told me that on enough occasions.” Shane pointed out.

“I’m sorry for ever making you doubt how I feel about you.” Ilya said.

“It doesn’t matter. We’re here now and we’re having a baby together.” Shane dismissed, allowing Ilya to join their lips in a gentle kiss. It reminded him of the way the alpha had kissed him in the stairwell the first time they’d ever had sex.

“Our baby.” Ilya breathed, placing a careful hand on Shane’s flat stomach. Shane rested his hand on top of Ilya’s, he couldn’t wait to see what the future brought for the three of them.
