“Your Japanese,” Reki says. "is… good! Not bad.”
The sentence trips over itself, but the intent is clear. Encouraging. Proud, even.
“Thanks,” Langa says, surprised by how warm that makes him feel.
Reki drums his fingers against the table, searching for words. “You from… Canada, yes?”
“Yeah.”
“Snowboarding country!” Reki declares, like it’s a scientific fact.
Langa blinks. Then, without thinking, he smiles. “Snowboarding, yeah.”
Reki lights up instantly.
He launches into Japanese, words spilling fast and excited. Langa catches maybe a third of it. Something about boards. Speed. Falling a lot.
Reki stops suddenly. “Ah—sorry! Too fast.”
“It’s okay,” Langa says honestly. “I like listening.”
