Chapter 1: Rookie Hearts, Shielded Souls

Chapter Text

"Man, I forget how tiring rehearsals are..." Eunsan sighed as he grabbed his water bottle, drinking it for a while.

"Hyung! Here, your towel." Nakyum politely hands it to him. He likes caring for his members, not wanting them to get sick or injured. "Thanks, Nakyum, you should dry yourself off too," Eunsan commented as he wiped his forehead.

Baek Eunsan, one of the handsome members in the group, and Baek Nakyum, as the main cutie, often get mistaken for being related, as both of their surnames are 'Baek'. Though even they deny it, some of their fans like to see them as brothers.

"How long is our practice today? It is 10:25 AM now." Dobin wondered; he was eager to have lunch already, though. They woke up early to practice rehearsals, and he was the moody one out of them.

"I'm pretty sure it's until 11:30, then the rest of the day is ours," Eunsan replied. He was unsure about the time—he hoped it would be right.

"Guys! The manager said after lunch, we should head back to our quarters. He said he has something for us." Dan announced as he approached the three, with his phone in his hand. "Ah, really? I wonder what's it about." Eunsan muttered, curious about the event for later.

"Oh, then let's not waste time! Let's continue our practice." Nakyum enthused as he stretched for a while. "Five more minutes, please. I still wanna rest.." Dobin sighed as he sat down on the floor.

They all safely arrived at their quarters after having a quiet, hectic lunch, which was gracefully managed to finish in the end. Eunsan gently grabs the doorknob, twisting it open and heading inside. He was expecting their manager to be the one he sees but then was quickly startled by the reveal. It wasn't their manager; it was four guys in suits looking like detectives or policemen.

Could be both.

"I'm sorry, but who are you guys?" Dan asked, standing next to Eunsan’s left side, as he wondered who they were. He wasn't expecting this. Where was their manager?

"Apologies for the disturbance." One of the guys spoke in a calm yet icy tone. "I'm Yoon Seungho, one of the deputy chiefs of the police command." He added as he slightly bowed at them. Nakyum stared at him for a while before he averted his gaze. Seungho caught his attention first, then the other three.

"Here are my coworkers, Ryu Ian, Seo Tae-oh, and Joo Jaekyung. We're here to be your personal bodyguards as requested by your manager." He proclaimed as he introduced the other three besides him. After a few seconds, the idols unintentionally said the same thing.

"WHAT?!" they all shouted, followed by a confused expression written all over each of their faces.

Each of them begins to process what they just heard.

"Personal bodyguards?" Nakyum thought as he looked at his member's reaction.

"But why..?" Eunsan pondered, putting his left hand on his chin.

"Four personal bodyguards.. For each of us??" Dobin choked, his thoughts repeating for a while.

After a moment of silence, Dan breaks the moment by asking the question.

"Are you serious, Sir Yoon?" Dan questioned—he wasn't sure if this was supposed to be taken seriously or not.

They are new idols, so of course, they should expect security guards for them. But they didn't expect personal bodyguards immediately after the rise in popularity of their first single. They were very much new to this whole idol gig they signed up for.

“You’re not taking my Sunbae’s words seriously then?” Jaekyung responded as he tilted his head to the side, crossing his arms. Honestly, how can these idols not take this seriously?

“He was just making sure! There’s no harm in asking questions, right?” Dobin exclaimed as he defended Dan’s question. He scooted near him, making sure he was heard.

“Of course not, you don’t have to act all feisty about it,” Tae-oh remarked, entertained by Dobin’s attitude. He couldn’t help but admit that Dobin looked pretty cute up close.

“Anyways.. So, since there are four of you, it means that each of us gets a bodyguard, right?” Eunsan asked, noticing how they were both equally four, it would make sense.

“Indeed, your manager already told us who we’re assigned to,” Ian commented, his soft gaze didn’t leave Eunsan for a minute. In fact, he was always staring at how pretty Eunsan’s eyes were.

“Then, shall we know which one’s which?” Nakyum questioned; he was the curious one out of them. Standing next to Eunsan’s right side, eager to know who would be his personal bodyguard.

“Of course, Nakyum, I’ll be your bodyguard,” Seungho answered as they both locked eyes with one another, his tone filled with confidence. Nakyum’s eyes widened as he was surprised that his bodyguard would be the deputy chief.

“Ah, I see..” Nakyum muttered, his hand immediately holding Eunsan’s arm as protection. He felt nervous about Seungho; he thought it was for Eunsan as they looked around the same age.

“Eunsan, I’ll be your personal bodyguard,” Ian confessed, as he immediately walked towards him, a little too enthusiastically. “Oh, how nice, Ryu Ian, huh?” Eunsan pondered—his reaction was the opposite of Nakyum’s; he was curious.

“I’ll be yours, Dan,” Jaekyung spoke as he scooted near him. His expression makes it look like he hates it, but secretly, it hides his true feelings. “Then I’ll be glad of your service, Sir Joo,” Dan noted with his polite tone. He wonders how this will go, hoping there won’t be any problems dealing with him.

“Which leaves me with you, Dobin,” Tae-oh said as he stared down at him, a smirk painted on his face. “What? You? Of all of them, I get the one who looks like he’s asking for trouble..” Dobin hissed, surely he felt like life tossed him a bad luck ball and said, “Oops, you get this one!” He felt pretty bummed out.

Is it too late to request someone else?

“Will you guys be staying in our place then, like here?” Dan asked, wondering if they’ll be enough rooms for them to stay. Though this would mean lots of rearranging and organizing furniture happening.

Oh boy, that’s a lot of hard work, then.

“No, we’re not going to be your bodyguards 24/7. It will only be during special events and gatherings, or rehearsals that we will accompany you all.” Seungho answered, back to his icy tone. A sigh of relief escaped from Dobin; it would be crazy for him to see Tae-oh 24/7.

“Yeah, that does seem understandable.” Eunsan thought it through with Seungho’s answer. He wasn’t sure what the difference was between a normal bodyguard and a personal one, though he would slowly learn it.

“Anymore questions?” Seungho asked this time, wondering if the idols would have anymore things to comment on or ask. “Oh, um… When would you guys start?” Nakyum chirped next to Eunsan, his eyes landing on Seungho once more. “From what your manager told us, it would be on Monday. Today is Friday, so we’ll see you guys then.” Jaekyung answered as he scratched his neck.

“Well, that concludes it. We’ll be out now, see you.” Tae-oh chimed, his gaze never left Dobin. All four gentlemen left the beloved idol’s quarter, leaving them time to process the situation again.

Nighttime falls, with each light of the city beginning to turn off one by one. Eunsan was in the living room, drinking the hot cocoa he made himself. He wonders how the situation will look on Monday, though it would feel awkward with them around.

“Eunsan Hyung, you’re still up?” Dan asked as he made his way to Eunsan, who was sitting on the couch. “Oh, Dan. Sorry, I was just—” Before Eunsan could finish what he said, Dan quickly interrupted him, knowing what he was going to say. “Thinking? I understand. I’m still… Processing this,” Dan sat down near Eunsan, looking at the floor with uncertainty.

Eunsan deeply sighed as he lowered his head. “This… Is going to be something new,” saying his thoughts out loud. “It is, though I hope each of our safety will be protected well,” Dan replied as he looked out the window. “I trust them; they don’t seem the type to goof around, handling this kind of duty.” He added as he gently pats Eunsan’s back.

“You’re right, we should feel grateful about this. Our safety is their priority after all,” Eunsan spoke with ease in his mind. Dan’s reassuring words did help him calm down his train of thought. “That’s the spirit, Eunsan Hyung, shall we head to bed?” Dan swiftly stands up from the couch, the sparkle never leaving his eyes.

“Of course, it is getting late.” With one quick sip from his mug, Eunsan finished drinking his hot cocoa. Dan goes first, walking to his bedroom as Eunsan washes his mug. Afterwards, he heads to his own room, getting on his bed.

All four beloved idols made their way to dreamland, falling fast asleep in their own comfortable beds.
