Chapter Text
I woke to the sound of rhythmic beeping and fluorescent lights. I opened my eyes, blinking rapidly as my eyes adjusted to the bright lights.
"Good, you're awake," a woman said. I glanced over to see three doctors standing at my bedside. They seemed familiar, but I couldn't place where I knew them from.
"I'm Dr. Cameron," the woman said. "These are my colleagues, Dr. Chase and Dr. Foreman. We've been assigned to your case. Do you remember what happened?"
I frowned, thinking for a moment. "I went to work at an elementary school, like usual. I stopped by at the office to check my mail, and I felt faint. Then, I woke up here."
"That's good," Dr. Foreman said. "We've placed you on an IV due to dehydration. Have you fainted before like this? Any medications, medical conditions, anything that you can think of that's medically relevant?"
"No," I said. "No medications, no medical issues, nothing. I've been healthy all my life. And I've been drinking plenty of water. Can I ask what hospital this is so I can let my husband know?"
"Of course," Dr. Cameron said. "We're at Princeton-Plainsboro Teaching Hospital. And we'd like to run some blood tests to try to determine the cause of the fainting. Just general things like anemia, diabetes, things like that. We'll draw some blood, run the tests, and get back to you with the results."
"Of course," I said. "Do I need to sign anything?"
"Right here, on the line," Dr. Cameron said, handing you the clipboard and pen she was holding. I signed it before handing it back to her. We exchanged small smiles before she stepped back.
Dr. Chase stepped forward with the tools for the blood draw. "I'm going to draw your blood now," he said. "It'll be a little pinch, but it shouldn't hurt too much."
"Okay," I said.
The pinch came just as I heard a commotion down the hallway. It was followed by a familiar click, step, click, step. Dr. Cameron frowned, following Dr. Foreman out into the hall to investigate.
Dr. Chase smiled politely at me and said, "All done. Like Dr. Cameron said, we'll let you know the results of the blood tests."
He stepped out of the room with the vials of blood. Seconds later, my husband stepped into the room.
"Greg," I whispered, and he froze as if the sound of his name caused something inside him to snap. "Say my name and everything just stops," I thought. I smiled at him, softly saying, "Come here."
He obeyed, stepping over to my bed. I reached for his hand, squeezing it for a second.
He squeezed back. "What happened?"
"I fainted when I was getting the mail from the main office," I replied. "Three doctors in my room when I came to. They look familiar."
He let out a huff, rolling his eyes in a teasing manner. "Well, maybe I know them, Y/N."
I let my hand fall back onto the bed. "They said their names are Dr. Cameron, Dr. Chase, and Dr. Foreman."
He frowned. "That's my team. Why were they here?" "Your team?" I frowned. "That's why they seemed familiar. They said that they were assigned to my case. They're running blood tests right now."
"Why?" he asked.
"They think it might be anemia or diabetes or something," I explained. "By the way, what was that commotion in the hall?"
"That was me trying to figure out which room you were in," he replied. "The nurses weren't convinced that we were married."
I rolled my eyes despite my smile. "I'm sure they weren't. The big bad Gregory House can't be married."
A couple hours later, his team returned to my room.
"We got the results back from your blood tests," Dr. Cameron said. She paused, glancing at her clipboard before taking a breath. "You're pregnant in your first trimester. Fainting can happen, especially if you're also dehydrated or didn't eat enough. In your case, it was dehydration. We'd like to keep you here for monitoring for a few more hours to make sure you'll be alright. We'd also like to schedule an ultrasound to determine the health and age of the fetus. If you would like, we could also schedule an abortion."
I shook my head. "I'm fine with the ultrasound, but I'd like to keep the baby."
Dr. Cameron smiled. "Of course. Sign here." I signed on the line again.
"What tests are you running now, Cameron?"
We all looked over to see Greg standing in the doorway.
"Where have you been, House?" Dr. Foreman asked. "We've been looking all over for you to discuss the blood tests and following steps. It's unlike you."
Greg walked over to the side of my bed as he said, "If you must know, I was alternating between the clinic and my wife here. She's been updating me on the case. Why didn't you page me?"
"We did," Dr. Chase said. "You didn't answer."
"Oops," Greg said sarcastically before sitting down next to my bed.
"Wait, your wife?" Dr. Cameron interrupted. "You're not married. You've never mentioned being married."
I tried and failed to suppress a smile, looking over at my husband as I said, "See, I told you. The big bad Gregory House can't be married."
He smiled. "Embarrassed of me?" he teased.
"You wish," I teased right back.
"There's no way," Dr. Chase muttered as I started messing with my IV.
Greg looked at him. "You saw her last name on the file. You didn't think that maybe she had some form of relationship with me? Stop messing with your IV, Y/N."
I sighed and stopped messing with it as Dr. Chase opened his mouth but quickly closed it. He looked like a fish out of water, almost.
"Whatever," I said. "Greg, the blood tests came back. They know why I fainted."
"Let's hear it," he replied.
I took a breath and chuckled nervously before meeting his gaze. "Greg, I..."
He raised an eyebrow but otherwise didn't say anything.
I managed to muster up my courage and said, "Greg, I'm pregnant. And dehydrated, but you knew about that part."
"I- I'm going to be a father?" His voice was uncharacteristically quiet and soft with undercurrents of shock.
I nodded. "Yes, Greg. We're going to be parents."
He smiled, reaching for my hand. I met him halfway, and he kissed my knuckles. "So... I assume the next step that they suggested was an ultrasound," he said. "Or they were about to get there."
"They already got there," I said. "I already signed for it."
"And we'll go put that in now," Dr. Cameron said. "Besides, I think the two of them need a moment to process this. It's big news, after all."
The three of them left. I could've sworn that I heard Dr. Chase said that he still couldn't believe that House was married on the way out. Greg kissed my forehead when they were gone.
"Your eyes look like home," I thought as he said, "So, first trimester, huh? We better get to the part where we start coming up with names."
I laughed. Everything was going to be okay after all.
