Chapter 1: Wish

Chapter Text

Mirabel finally was comfortable going into town by herself.

For the first few months she didn't leave Casita.

Then she did but it was to glue herself to her parents' side.

But now that it had been a year since her horrible ceremony, she was able to accept it and find the bright side.

Or at least try to.

The point was she had to help.

Madrigals helped everyone.

So she walked into town.

Only to be lightly shoved down.

"Hey!" Her glasses slid off her face.

"Give them back!"

She couldn't make out who it was but she recognized the voice.

Manuel Rivera.

A very mean boy.

"I bet you're not really a Madrigal."

"I am!"

"Really the only Madrigal that needs glasses is your Papi and he's not a real Madrigal either!"

"Give my glasses back!"

"You should leave like your Tio!"

"Hey!" Mariano's voice echoed. something clunked and Mirabel grabbed for her glasses, putting them on in time to see Mariano chasing Manuel away.

Mirabel took a deep breath to attempt to not cry.

She kept walking.

"Isabela? Do you need help?"

Isabela was growing a garden.

"Isa?" She repeated.

"What?" Isabela turned.

Mirabel flinched under the tone. "Um... Do you..."

"Just go do whatever! I have work to do!"

Mirabel felt tears burn her eyes but she ran back to the house.

Only to run into Abuela.

"Abuela..."

"I know you want to help but for some of us, the best way to help is to stand aside and let the rest of the family do what they do best okay?"

Mirabel nodded. At least she thought she did.

Mirabel was crying in the nursery.

If she wasn't a Madrigal, none of this would be her problem!

If she had a different family it wouldn't matter if she wasn't magical!

Casita tried to cheer her up with it's tiles.

But Mirabel kept crying.

The candle glowed.

And Mirabel voiced a wish. "I wish I had a different familia."

The candle's light shone through the entireity of the Encanto.

"I could have sworn I heard something."

"We're traveling through the wilderness Carmen I'm sure it was an animal."

"No no I heard....oh dios MiO it's a child!"

A woman ran over to Mirabel, inspecting her. "How'd you get this far away from any civilization?"

Mirabel blinked.

"I don...I don't remember."

The woman and man looked at each other. "Sweetie what..."

"Mama!" A shout echoed as two kids ran over. "Miguel is trying to get on my side of the wagon..."

"Why do you two have sides?" The woman said.

She looked back at Mirabel.

"Do you remember your name?"

"Mirabel." But for some reason if she thought of a last name it was a great big blank.

"Do you want to travel with us?"

"Oh cool finally a sister!"

"I'm not that bad!"

the dad ignored the kids.

"Well? We don't have a lot of room but..."

Mirabel nodded.

"I'm Julio, this is my wife Carmen. these two charmers are Imelda and Miguel."

Mirabel nodded.

"And Tia Lupe and Tio Hector are on the wagon with Raul and Felipe. You want to meet them?" Imelda was probably Mirabel's age.

"Sure..."

Alma had run back to the house as soon as she saw the candle glowing, unsure of what it would mean.

Nothing seemed to change.

"Dinner's ready!" Julieta called.

they didn't notice that family pictures changed, cutting the youngest Madrigal granddaughter out of them.

And from their memory.

Casita hadn't given her a gift so Mirabel would help Abuela.

It didn't work.

In fact it backfired so horrendously.

So it thought it could grant Mirabel's wish.

Give her a new family.

And erase everyone's memory of her being a Madrigal, just so no one would cry.
