Summary:

Phoenix and Trucy go to watch Miles at one of his trials. Who could they possibly meet there? Definitely not the man who takes over Phoenix’s legacy.

Notes:

Phoenix is such a dork. I really like the headcanon that he gets all melty when Miles kisses him

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

“Daddy,” Trucy whined. “When is papa getting home?”

“I don’t know, babygirl. He just left,” Phoenix replied. He checked his phone– only an hour had passed since Miles left for work.

“Can we go watch him?” Trucy asked.

Phoenix rested his head back on the couch. “Usually you watch the defense. Watching prosecution isn’t fun.”

“Watching papa would be fun,” Trucy argued. She tapped Phoenix’s forehead. “You just don’t want to get off the couch ‘cause you’re a lazy bum.”

“I’m not,” Phoenix objected.

“Papa will probably be mad if I tell him you didn’t let me come watch him,” Trucy stated confidently.

Begrudgingly, Phoenix picked up his phone and handed it up to Trucy. If he texted Miles, he would be scolded. If Trucy did, she would be met with kindness and probably a positive outcome.

Nick: pappaaaaaaaaaaa

MIles <3: Yes, Trucy?

Nick: can daddy and I come watch you today??

Miles <3: Court is very boring, Trucy. It takes a long time for anything to actually happen.

Nick: but I’m bored

Miles <3: You’ll be bored watching me argue with someone for six hours. If it was your father I was up against, that would be a completely different story.

Nick: daddy was a lawyer???

Miles <3: Ask him.

“Daddy, were you a lawyer?” Trucy questioned.

“A long time ago,” Phoenix replied. “People called me the ace attorney.”

Nick: daddy says he was a long time ago

Nick: that makes sense because he’s old

Miles <3: It was only a couple years ago. He was a very good lawyer.

Nick: I'm still bored

Miles <3: You can come if Phoenix can find someone to drive him here.

Nick: Yayyy!!!!

“Papa says we can come if you can get someone to drive you there,” Trucy informed. She dropped Phoenix’s phone back into his lap.

“The courthouse is literally two streets over. We can walk there,” Phoenix said as he stood up.

The whole way to the courthouse, Trucy was bounding down the sidewalk. She’d never seen one of Miles’ trials, since they tended to cover murder. He was always a completely different man in the courtroom. A different man who Phoenix loved just as much as the other.

“Is papa’s office in the courthouse?” Trucy asked.

“Yup. He gets a really fancy office because he’s good at his job,” Phoenix explained.

“Have you been in his office before?”

Phoenix cleared his throat. “I sure have. There’s a lot of books in his office. A lot of boring books.” As he spoke, Phoenix held the door of the courthouse open for Trucy. He showed the officer in front of the elevator Miles’ card, and they were allowed in.

When the elevator doors opened on the correct floor, Trucy ran out. She stopped in front of a door with a plaque that read “Miles Edgeworth”.

“That’s the right door,” Phoenix assured, gesturing for her to open it.

Inside, Miles was doing the last of his work before the trial. His thin-framed glasses sat on his nose, a hand in his hair to keep it out of his face.

“Papa!” Trucy exclaimed as she ran up to his desk.

“Miles looked up from his work and smiled. “Trucy, I see you were able to make it.

“After berating me for no reason,” Phoenix deadpanned. “She called me a lazy bum.”

“Well, were you being a lazy bum?” Miles asked jokingly.

Trucy nodded. “He was.”

“She also called you old while she was texting me,” Miles informed. He stood up with his folders and walked over toward Phoenix. He tugged at the strings of his jacket when he got close enough. “You couldn’t bother getting a little more dressed to come watch me.”

“People have come to court in a lot less than this before,” Phoenix argued.

Miles kissed the corner of his mouth. “I’ve got to start heading down the stairs. I’ll see you two in court.”

Phoenix chuckled. “I’ll see you in court.”

Miles gave Phoenix one more kiss then headed out of his office. Every time the prosecutor kissed Phoenix, he got a little more delirious.

“Why does papa only use the stairs?” Trucy asked.

“Hm?” Phoenix hummed, his eyes following Miles.

Trucy stomped up to Phoenix. “I said, why doesn’t papa use the elevator?”

Phoenix sighed. “That’s a story for another time. You can hear it when you’re older.”

~•~

Phoenix and Trucy sat in the second row of the gallery. Obviously they sat in Miles' half of the courtroom. In front of them sat a very excited young man with a white button down. Beside him sat a young man with short blonde hair. He obviously didn’t care that he was here.

“They’re gonna start soon,” The kid squealed. He gestured toward Miles, who was still looking at his files. “That’s Miles Edgeworth. He was trained by Manfred Von Karma. He’s one of the best prosecutors in the country, earning the title ‘demon prosecutor', because he’d never lost a case. He was undefeated until Phoenix-”

“I know all of this, Herr Forehead. You told me on the way here,” the blond dismissed.

“You can be nicer than that, Klav,” The kid huffed.

“‘Phoenix Wright’ this and ‘Phoenix Wright’ that… You have a parasocial relationship with a guy who doesn’t even practice law anymore,” Klav replied. He swatted the other’s shoulder. “I think you’d explode if he was actually here right now.”

Phoenix placed a hand over his mouth to keep himself from laughing. Trucy was staring holes into him, trying to say that he should talk to that kid. He let the look simmer for a moment. Mostly to prevent him from guffawing in a courtroom, but also to see if Trucy would stop.

In the end, he did lean forward. “There’s a rumor that Phoenix Wright and Miles Edgeworth have something going on behind closed doors.”

The kid rolled his eyes. “That rumor hasn’t been a thing for- Oh my god. Klav it’s actually Phoenix Wright.”

“I bet it is,” Klav agreed sarcastically. He was still focused on the screen in front of him.

“Nice to meet you, kid,” Phoenix greeted. He held out his hand to shake.

“I’m Apollo, sir,” Apollo introduced. He took Phoenix’s hand faster than a human should’ve been able to. “I’ve been to a lot of your trials, sir.”

“Nice to know I have fans,” Phoenix smiled.

From the court floor, Phoenix got a glare from Miles. He mouthed something along with it but Phoenix couldn’t make it out. Miles ended up just putting a finger to his mouth to shush the two.
