Work Text:
Joel is working at the same summer camp he grew up going to when he was a kid, and now he is sitting on his bunk in the counselor's cabin, enjoying his time on break before he has to go back and work with his cabin kids.
He’s sitting, a book open in his hands reading, when one of the other boys counselors comes into the cabin, the door squeaking as it shuts.
Said man, Scott, is a boy who also went to the camp when he and Joel were kids.
Joel’s eyes flick up from his book as Scott walks across the cabin, walking over to his own bed, flopping down with a dramatic sigh before sitting up, and pulling his phone out, adjusting his pastel blue hair before doing something on his phone.
Joel’s noticed that he feels something flutter in his chest when he spots Scott.
It’s weird.
Him and Scott always used to try and annoy each other when they were kids, but now that their older, Joel feels drawn to the other man, wanting to spend time around him, wanting to press his lips to Scott’s soft pink one-
‘No.’ Joel tells himself, shaking himself from his thoughts.
He’s been going down that train of thought far too much this summer.
Joel watches as Scott puts his phone down, looking out the window next to his bunk, contemplating something.
The thoughts creep back into Joel’s mind, ‘you know he’s gay, you at least have a shot with him, if only you would say something.’
Joel bites his cheek, annoyed with himself.
While Scott has been open about being gay since they were teens, Joel highly doubts he would want to date him of all people.
Joel’s heart aches a little as a passing thought that Scott might already be dating someone, passes through his mind.
The brunet is pulled from his thoughts when someone asks, “So what’s your book about?”
Joel locks eyes with Scott from across the small cabin as he realizes Scott’s talking to him.
He clears his throat, putting his bookmark in his book and setting it down before saying, “It’s just some random book I threw in my suitcase, I’ve barely read it, so I don’t really know yet.”
“Mmnn.” Scott hums, smiling, moving his legs so he’s sitting criss-cross, “that’s nice.”
Joel’s heart swoops at the cyanet’s smile.
The thought of kissing Scott creeps back into Joel’s mind as the words are tumbling out of his mouth before he realizes he’s speaking them, “Scott, how did you know you were gay?”
Scott raises an eyebrow at his question, lips turning up at the corner before speaking, “Well.” he says, “I’d say, I never really had a crush on anyone until I had my first one on Jimmy.”
“Jimmy, from here at camp? When we were kids?” Joel asks.
Scott nods, “Yeah, I’m over it now, but it made me realize that I liked boys and, well…” he trails off, looking away, before looking back at Joel “why do you ask?”
Joel swallows the lump in his throat, forcing out the words he’s never voiced, only heard in his head, but never coming from his mouth, “I think I’m gay.”
Scott raises an eyebrow, “Are you?”
“I don’t know.” Joel admits, looking away from Scott’s stupidly handsome face.
“If you want to find out, you could always try kissing a boy, see if you like it or not.” Scott says, resting his cheek on his palm, resting his elbow on his knee.
Joel can hear his heart hammering in his chest as he dares to ask, “Could I kiss you.” he asks, cheek warm.
Scott wets his lips, smiling, “Why not.” he says in a taunting way, getting out of his bed and crossing a cabin in five slow strides.
Joel’s breath hitches as his bed dips down in front of him as Scott sits on it, fully facing him.
“Is there any specific way you want to do this?” he asks, tilting his head to the side a bit, grinning at Joel.
Joel shakes his head.
“Okay.” Scott says, slowly reaching up, cupping Joel’s cheek.
Joel feels himself blush, leaning into the gentle touch of the other camp counselor.
Scott is slow, pulling them close, leaning in until their lips meet.
Joel closes his eyes.
He’s kissed people before, he’s kissed girls, but never a boy.
It feels nice.
Scott feels nice.
Joel leans more into the kiss enjoying the feeling of Scott’s lips moving slowly against his own.
After what feels like a lifetime, Scott pulls away, breathing out, “How was that?”
Joel can feel his cheeks burning all the way up to his ears as a realization crosses his mind, he’s Bi.
Scott sits back with a smug smirk, “You’re…exstreamly red.”
“Shut up.” Joel growls, old habits dying hard at the smugness in Scott’s words, self-satisfied in the blushing mess he’s helped Joel become.
Scott licks the bottom of his top teeth, from one canine to the other, “Like actually vermillion” he says, giggling.
“Go to Hell.” Joel says, not meeting the cyanet’s eyes.
“Hmmm.” Scott hums, “I’m guessing you liked it?”
Joel slowly nods his head, opening his mouth, “I-I’m bi.”
Scott smiles, "Congratulations on coming out.” he says, with a wink, “Now. I would love to kiss you again.”
