    “egg, please,” he whispered again, desperate, like saying his name enough times might tether him to the world. “look at me. c’mon, look at me.”

    egg’s eyes fluttered, barely open. the bright blue that had always been full of life, of stupid jokes and reckless courage, were dull now. fading. slipping away right in front of him.

    “please, please,” wemmbu sobbed. “minute will be here any second. you just have to hold on. just a little longer. i’ll fix this, okay? i always fix things.”

    egg’s lips twitched into the faintest smile.

    there was no fear on his face. no panic. just this awful calm, like he’d already accepted something wemmbu refused to.
