Day 4 words used: What if?

Work Text:

“Excuse me, would you mind passing me some sugar?”

Kurt tapped on the shoulder of the young man in front, who stood at the condiment island in the Lima Bean. Kurt and Mercedes were in their favorite coffee shop, on way to shopping at the Mall to buy some new clothes for her.

“Oh, sure”

The young man turned back, handing the sachets of sugar to Kurt.

Their fingertips touched as he handed them over.

Their eyes met, and for about five seconds, they stared at each other. The young man was gorgeous, with black curly hair gelled nicely, big brown caramel eyes, and when he smiled his whole face lit up. Kurt stood star struck, mesmerized.

It was almost as if the young man was sensing something too. He stared into Kurt’s cerulean eyes, and this brought a smile to his face. It was like they were both rooted to the spot.

“Umm, thank you for the sugar.”

“You’re welcome.”

Mercedes spoke up. “Say, what’s that uniform, you must go to a posh school!”

“It’s Dalton Academy, in Westerville, North Columbus.”

“I don’t know that one, I don’t think.” she mused.

Kurt stood transfixed, trying not to stare. A shiver ran down his spine at the young man’s soft spoken voice.

“I’m waiting for my parents here; we are looking at houses in Lima. I’ve been to see two with them already."

“Our house is in Toledo, but they want to move out closer to Columbus, and they saw details for some houses in Lima they liked. I board at school, so I don’t have to travel home every day. I’ve been allowed out of school for the weekend.” He jested.

“I wondered why you were in uniform on a Saturday. My name is Mercedes, and this is Kurt.”

The young man held out his hand to shake hers and then offered his to Kurt.

“My name is Blaine”, he said, once more staring straight into Kurt’s eyes, loosening his hold on Kurt’s hand slowly.

“Have you seen anything you like in Lima?” Kurt managed to find his voice.

Blaine hesitated. “Houses, you mean? Potentially. My parents are very fussy – old fashioned really. They never agree on what they like. That’s why I’m skipping the afternoon viewings. I can never resist trying a different coffee shop.”

“I’m sure I’ve seen you in here before.” Kurt asked.

“I don’t think so, this is my first trip to the Lima Bean.”

“I don’t know, I’m rarely in here on a Saturday myself. Today is an exception. Mercedes and I are going to shop.”

“Right. I thought I knew you too, but I’m sure I would have been able to recall meeting you.”

They smiled at each other, and Kurt turned back to finding a seat with Mercedes, whilst Blaine had spotted another Dalton boy and moved to talk to him.

Mercedes and Kurt sat down at the usual table.

“Hey, Kurt, what just happened there?”

“What Cedes?” Kurt was still in a world of his own.

“I don’t know, this weird feeling just crept over me. You know, when the two of you first looked at each other, it was like something surreal. I felt I was witnessing something otherworldly, but somehow I wasn’t apart of that world. It was just like the two of you, caught up in a moment.”

Kurt chuckled. “Oh Cedes we have been watching so many rom com recently, I never knew you had such a romantic vision of the world now.”

Mercedes laughed. “Maybe, you never know.” She started to talk to Kurt about her family, and their church, and then onto things about Glee club.

Out of the corner of his eye, Kurt saw Blaine leave the Lima Bean. He looked around, caught Kurt’s eye and smiled at him.

“Hell, boy, you’ve got it bad for him.”

“Nonsense Mercedes, I only just met him. No, I was wondering what he’d look like out of that uniform.”

Mercedes giggled. “I bet you were.”

“No, not like that…Like what he’d look like in ordinary clothes. It’s the designer in me coming out, I wonder how people would look in different outfits. I imagine he’d look great in a fitted suit, a button down shirt, and probably a flamboyant bow tie.”

“What color suit? Blue?”

“No, I’m thinking yellow.”

“Yellow?”

“Yeah he had the perfect skin tone for it.”

“You do have some funny design ideas. You never know maybe he could become your model or something, and you could design clothes for men, using him as a muse.”

“That sounds a fabulous idea.”

“You didn’t get his number though.”

“No, I didn’t. Oh well, I know nothing about him. He was just handsome and adorable.”

“What if….he moves to Lima, and you’ll see him in here again. Do not fret, fate has a funny way of helping us out.”

“I’m sure I will probably see him again. I just have an unexplained feeling about him. Now…about this set list.”
