Will you ever stop running?

Summary:

Some feelings don’t shout. They stay.
Amy Rose never stopped loving Sonic. She only learned how to do it quietly. When the past meets the present and Mobius’ fastest hero finally slows down, both of them must face what was always there. Sometimes, staying is the bravest choice of all.
But would he be brave enough?

Notes:

I tried writing a SonAmy, stepping a bit out of my comfort zone, which I usually have with SonAdow.
It's a tooth-rotting story, very cute but a little sad.
I might not write about this ship often, but I wanted to try. Since I really like how it works.

I hope you all like it! Don't forget to leave kudos :)

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Chapter Text

Amy had always been a hedgehog known for her heart.

Her heart was big. Loving. Always there for all her friends. Always caring. Always smiling. She loved everyone as if they were family.

But there was one friend she always wanted more than friendship with.

It was Sonic, the hero of Mobius.

She remembers when she saw him for the first time. The cobalt fur, emerald eyes shining that pulled her in like an orbit. A smile that, in that moment, seemed especially meant for her.

'It’s him.' She thought at that moment. As clear as day, as real as love could be for those who believed.

She admits she used to chase him before. She was immature. Blind with young love.

But she fell in love at first sight that day. It wasn’t something fleeting, it wasn’t something she had foreseen. It simply happened.

Since then, loving Sonic became as natural as breathing. There was no conscious choice in it, no promises or expectations. It was just… being there. Feeling. Even on the days she told herself she needed to move on, the feeling remained, quiet, patient, as if it knew it wouldn’t leave. Amy never knew when that love stopped being an impulse and became a part of her.

The pink hedgehog remembers how Sonic never seemed to return her feelings. Never rude, but never seeming to feel the same.

When she grew up, that feeling blossomed stronger. But also more mature. She made new friends, learned life lessons, but her love for Sonic never diminished.

Loving Sonic was no longer about chasing him or daydreaming about impossible endings. It was about accepting him as he was, too free to be tied down, too fast to look back. Amy learned to guard her feelings carefully, like something too precious to be thrown into words. Even so, every small gesture from him still had the power to unbalance her.

And maybe she thought it would never lessen. Did it hurt? Of course. It hurt like a stab to her heart every time he gently rejected her, his cautious eyes trying not to hurt her. Shining with concern and care.

And strangely, that made her love him even more.

It was such a good feeling. But such a painful one.

Sometimes, Amy wondered if loving someone like that was a strange kind of courage or just stubbornness. She smiled, helped, stayed. Never demanded anything in return. But in silence, she carried the weight of all the words she never said and all the answers she already knew. Even so, she couldn’t regret it.

If she had a choice, would she choose to love him even knowing he wouldn’t love her the same?

“Amy…!” Tails offered her a strange smile as he called her. The hedgehog blinked as she tried to process where she was.

She had forgotten she was at the young inventor’s house to talk. She had gotten lost in her thoughts again. Something frequent in recent months.

“I’ve been calling you for a while, but no answer. Did something happen?” Amy looked at him, her green eyes examining the fox in front of her with a strange surprise.

She wondered when Tails had grown so much. How much time had passed?

When did everyone grow up and she got stuck in this feeling?

“Nothing happened. It’s all fine.” She offered a smile, but Tails seemed to notice it wasn’t very genuine.

Tails was almost an adult now. She herself was an adult now. He was an adult.

They had all grown up. What made her think that perhaps growing up makes some people realize feelings?

No matter how hard she tried, it seemed like the feeling of longing for him haunted her.

Every time she thought of him, a small flame of hope lit up in her chest.

Hope. A word that made her believe she could be more than just a close friend. Hope was dangerous. It was the kind of thing that grew in silence and exploded at the worst moments. Amy tried to suffocate it more times than she could count, telling herself it was better not to expect anything. But every time Sonic smiled at her in that familiar way, something inside her refused to die. That word had a bitter taste in her mouth.

“Tails, I’m heading out now,” she stood up as she watched the window near her. It was already dusk, the sun was beautiful that afternoon. Even if she weren’t lost in her own mind, it would still be time to go.

Tails murmured some apologies and walked her to the door. Amy felt heavy at that moment. Her eyelids weighed down in a way that made her head ache.

On her way home, Amy came across Sonic. Standing a few meters away, talking to a child while buying her an ice cream.

Judging by the child, she didn’t seem to have many resources. She was a rabbit child, her clothes were patched and dirty, but she looked at the strawberry ice cream with shining eyes.

Watching that scene made Amy place her hand on her chest, as warmth settled there.

She had always known that was what made her love him. Not the great feats or the battles won, but those small, almost invisible moments. Sonic never stopped caring about others. He cared without realizing it, saved without asking for recognition. Amy wondered, not for the first time, if one day he would realize that someone was also there, caring for him in the same way.

Eggman had given up attacking Sonic a long time ago, leaving the hero in peace. There wasn’t much to protect other than bandits, but the police could handle that, sometimes with Sonic’s help or not.

But Sonic was always a hero. That was in his actions and his heart.

When Sonic stopped talking to the child and she ran off to play with her friends, he seemed to notice Amy standing there watching him.

He opened a bright smile as he invited her to join him.

She went. She went while repeating in her head that it was nothing. Trying to smother her heart beating too fast with emotion over the sudden invitation.

Sonic will never see you as more than a friend. Accept it.’

A voice came from deep within her mind. Something that made her heart stop doing somersaults and sink in less than five seconds.

Amy took a deep breath, trying to convince herself that the voice was right. Maybe it would be easier to accept than to keep waiting for something that would never come. Still, her heart insisted on reacting, beating too fast for someone who claimed she had already given up. She hated how much she still cared. Hated it… and loved it at the same time.

“Amy, are you okay?” Sonic looked at her as they sat on a bench in the park. Those eyes still looked at her with care and affection after all these years.

Could it be more than that?

“I’m fine.” She gave the same fake smile she had given Tails earlier and turned her face away. She didn’t need to show these feelings now.

She had already learned how to smile like that. A practiced, safe smile that revealed nothing beyond what was allowed. Amy knew Sonic trusted her, saw her as someone strong. Maybe too strong to admit she was tired of pretending it didn’t hurt.

Sonic must already be fed up with her and these stupid feelings, right?

Sonic, on the contrary, frowned. Seeing Amy like that made something twist inside him. He had known her for years, knew her real laughter and her strange silences. And that silence… wasn’t common. It wasn’t her. For the first time, he allowed himself to think that maybe he had ignored more things than he wanted to admit. He raised his hand without thinking and touched Amy’s face, bringing it closer to his and making her look at him.

Amy’s heart stuttered at the touch. Her mouth went dry, with nothing to say. Confusion was written all over her face, still not understanding what this was supposed to mean.

“If you’re not okay, feel free to talk to me.” Sonic’s eyes shone, showing his determination and honesty, something that had never faded over the years. “You’ve always been someone special to me. Lately, it’s been becoming more. So don’t feel pressured when you’re not feeling well.”

“Lately, it’s been becoming more”

Sonic’s words looped in her mind.

Amy felt the world around her grow distant. The park, the voices, the sound of the wind through the trees… everything seemed secondary to those words. More. That word carried too many possibilities for someone who had spent so long trying not to expect anything.

What was that supposed to mean?

What—

Sonic kissed her cheek as he pulled away, and Amy’s face went through several emotions in seconds.

“What…” She managed to say, her voice almost failing, but she swallowed hard and continued. “What is that supposed to mean?”

Sonic seemed shy for a moment. Sonic was never good at standing still, much less talking about feelings. But running away had always been easier than facing what he felt, and he knew that. Amy had always been there, constant, patient. Maybe it was time for him to be the brave one. He looked away, but it didn’t seem like a rejection.

Not this time.

He took a deep breath before continuing. His eyes meeting Amy’s.

“That I’m ready this time. I don’t want to run from you anymore.” He raised his hand to her cheek again, the touch gentle. He caressed her cheek with his thumb as he seemed to find the right words in that moment. “I want to stop and see what can happen. See if we can make it work. What I mean is…”

“…” Amy waited. She had waited so long for this moment in her life, why couldn’t she wait a little longer now?

“I like you. I don’t know how it happened, but it just happened—”

Amy didn’t need to hear the rest. Not because she didn’t want to, but because she had already waited too long. Some truths don’t need to be complete to be real. She recognized that feeling in his eyes, in the tone of his voice, in the way he had finally stopped.

She recognized that feeling shining in Sonic’s emerald eyes. The same shine she had always had while looking at him.

Tears streamed down her face as Sonic reciprocated. It was a soft, almost shy kiss. But it was filled with feelings that had been rejected for years. Filled with hopes she had thought useless until now.

The happiness she thought she would never have with Sonic by her side finally bloomed. Bloomed as beautifully as that kiss.

She smiled against Sonic’s lips.

For the first time, Amy didn’t feel afraid of what would come next. She didn’t need promises or guarantees. Being there, in that moment, was already enough. Loving Sonic had always been a choice. And finally, it seemed he had chosen to stay.

He had chosen to stay. For her.

It had been worth waiting after all.
