Chapter Text

Valentine's day was only a few days away.

At the end of the week, actually. Dazai lazed off at his desk, wondering if being together meant automatically being valentines or not.

He wasn’t sure, every article he read gave him different answers. Everything that said yes was pretty straight forward, but the ones disagreeing had so many reasons it messed with his head.

Whatever the answer was, Dazai wanted to be asked.

Kunikida didn’t seem like the type to take holidays such as valentines so intently, but Dazai liked it so he has to deal with it now.

However, despite being a super mature adult, Dazai wasn’t going to directly tell Kunikida he wanted to be asked out. If Kunikida knew, he’d most likely ask him right that moment, which took out the romantic aspect of surprise.

Dazai wanted Kunikida to genuinely want him to be his valentine. So, he decided on the great idea of hinting at it instead. Though his time was short, Dazai was confident in his skills.

He could see it now, a bouquet of flowers, box chocolate, dinner reservations—his brain melted thinking about it.

But…he didn’t like roses, he wasn’t sure if Kunikida knew that. He also didn’t like white chocolate, that one Kunikida would know even less. And an ‘ideal’ dinner reservation would be at a seafood restaurant…He’ll just have to be very specific with his hints then.

Dazai stretched against his chair trying to think of ideas. He could go online again, but his boyfriend wasn’t everyone else's, so their ideas would suck. This needs to be from his heart only, easy enough. Help would be nice, but he can do this.

A sheet of printer paper lying around Kunikida’s desk was stolen for his operation. Dazai decided to sketch out a plan first so he’d be able to find possible flaws ahead of time.

OPERATION V - #1

Tell Kunikida all about that new yummy

seafood restaurant that opened nearby

(˘ڡ˘ς)

This first plan was sure to also be the last. Dazai liked talking about different places with the intention of wanting to go, and Kunikida always fell for it. What could change now?

Smiling, Dazai reached over and pushed the back of Kunikida’s laptop down. His eyes lit up seeing that familiar annoyed face. He seemed a few buttons away from steaming, but Dazai liked tea.

“Ku-ni-ki-daaa~ Did you see that new food place? It’s so close by, and their crab is super cheap too!”

Before the other had even realized it, Dazai was doodling different fish onto his paperwork. Dazai beamed even more seeing the angry turn of Kunikida’s brows, it seemed he wouldn’t be able to hold back yelling any longer.

Instead of yelling though, the agency stayed silent. Kunikida took a deep breath before moving Dazai’s hand back to his own desk, then reopened his laptop to continue working.

It dumbfounded Dazai, this wasn’t like Kunikida at all! He was supposed to say at least something in acknowledgement of his darling boyfriend, not flat out ignore him!

Whatever, maybe it was some sort of new revenge technique. Dazai tried again. “Kunikidaaaa. New. Crab. Place. Opened. Super close!” as he spoke, Dazai relentlessly poked Kunikida’s forehead. Closing his laptop, Kunikida got up before walking away.

That was odd, he just left without a word. Perhaps this was a more important matter than Dazai’s original operation. Why was Kunikida being weird?

He turned over to Atsushi, nudging the younger boy’s shoulder. “Pst, Atsushiii… Did Kunikida get involved with an ability? He’s acting weird, right?” When Atsushi didn’t answer quickly enough, (a second after Dazai spoke) Dazai resulted in shaking his shoulders intensely so he’d be too dizzy to walk away like Kunikia.

“Wa—! Dazai—stop it!” Atsushi was seeing doubles after being let go. Two Dazai’s were horrifying to see, one was already enough. “Kunikida’s probably just stressed, he’s taking on a lot of work. You were barely here last week.”

Dazai brought a finger to his chin. He did miss a lot of days last week, causing his work to pile up. It wasn’t his fault though, he just didn’t want to get out of the comfy bed. Why go to boring work when you can stay home?

In fact, Dazai was so comfortable that he didn’t leave the bed that whole day until Kunikida returned and forced him to eat dinner at the table.

That was the only downside of living with Kunikida. Now, Dazai had to follow along with parts of Kunikida’s routine. Like waking up at around eight, brushing his teeth, washing his face, doing his hair, getting dressed, eating breakfast, and then walking to work. So tiring!

Kunikida woke up earlier than Dazai, so he was always the one to wake Dazai up instead of an annoying alarm. While Dazai wished Kunikida would stay next to him with the blankets for longer, he liked seeing his face first thing in the morning. It made waking up feel a little better.

He also liked the fact that Kunikida cooked for him. There was a visible difference in their plates, but every month they get closer to being the same.

Suddenly, Dazai was shot with an idea. He couldn’t perform it today, but it still seemed like a good plan B. Instead of Kunikida waking up early and taking care of Dazai, Dazai was going to wake up early and care for him. It sounded perfect, too bad he didn’t think of it sooner since now he wouldn’t need that plan.

He patted Atsushi’s head ‘sweetly’, then ran off to chase Kunikida. In the distance, he could almost hear the younger boy trying to stop him, but Dazai was too giddy to listen. Just as expected, Kunikida was in the break room making coffee.

The restaurant idea didn’t go so well, but not worries since Dazai had a new plan. He walked up behind Kunikida, wrapping his arms around him. “Kunikida, y’know how I stayed home most of last week?” he asked.

“Yes, you promised you’d get up soon and I believe you. Then I’d get home and you’d still be sleeping.” Frustration was present on the man’s face, and while he looked far from happy, he allowed Dazai to continue clinging onto him.

Dazai let out a little whistle before laughing. How silly, he wasn’t sleeping for that long, just a few good hours. “Hehe, sorry~ But! What if I told you I’ll have all my missing work done by noon?” He poked Kunikida’s cheek.

Kunikida turned his head to meet Dazai’s view, Dazai decided that the plant in the corner looked very compelling. “Really? You better not be bluffing.”

Dramatically, Dazai gasped. “Me? Bluff? Trust me, you have nothing to worry about.” While Dazai really was going to try and finish a paper, he still found it cute how Kunikida continued to obliviously trust his claims. It was fun seeing what Kunikida would and wouldn’t believe.

The blond looked at his partner with doubt in his eyes, then left with his burning cup.

What a walk in the park this will be, Dazai could finish a few reports in no time. Back in the main office area, Kunikida wasn’t visible. He must’ve gone to the cafe then, that was fine since now Dazai could surprise Kunikida by having his work done once he comes back.

Dazai’s hand picked up a pencil, but it stayed still in the air. When it did come down to meet the paper, it only left a dot. So, so weird, Dazai didn’t want to work. This was for his boyfriend though, and didn’t most spouses find joy in doing acts for their love? Maybe he just needed a bit of motivation.

Perhaps looking a bit more professional would help? Dazai snuck into the clinic, snooping around the different drawers until he found some black hair clips and a hair tie. While Dazai’s hair didn’t get in the way, it was still worth the effort to pin back.

Now in the agency bathrooms, Dazai stared in front of the mirror trying to tie his hair back. For some reason, getting his hair in the band was hard. The twisting was also confusing—how many times did he need to wrap it around?

His hair was also a bit layered, so pieces stuck out instead of all being neatly held back. That process was over and no longer needed to be worried about, now all he had to do was pin his bangs to the side.

Three clips were used in total. Two for the longer bits in the front, and one to pin the piece covering his forehead into a swoop. The longer pieces could’ve been tucked behind his ear, but he had a palm of clips he didn’t want to entirely waste.

Surprisingly, he liked how the side bangs looked. Not more than his usual style, but they were nice. Once everything was done, Dazai walked back to his desk very professionally.

Unfinished papers continued to wait on top of the desk. Their little mouths screamed for someone to complete them. How lucky they were, Dazai was here to give them their dreams!

Read, fill in blanks, done; simple. Dazai would have everything done in no time. He was given an unfair share of paperwork in the mafia on top of other long missions, agency work was nothing in comparison.

Five minutes went by, then ten. By fifteen, Dazai still hadn’t finished the first task. Reading wasn’t a difficult task, but when it was for work it was a boring task. Every time Dazai’s eyes met with a word, he suddenly felt tired. Lines blurred together and the important parts continued to slide out his head.

Kunikida valued his work time too much to waste it, he’d be back from the cafe before Dazai could get a sentence down! But that was right, Kunikida didn’t like taking time away from work, so why has he been gone for so long? Could he have ordered more than usual? A small public scandal happening outside the building? Dazai wanted to know, even if it was something insignificant.

Noon rolled around quickly. Dazai spent most of his day wondering about Kunikida. No work was finished, but at least Kunikida was back. The man was helping Atsushi out, not noticing the lack of writing Dazai had done. There wasn’t a chance for the brunette to ask what took him so long since he was trying to appear ‘distracted and busy’.

A part of him did feel slightly bad. It shouldn’t feel different, Dazai was always making empty promises to Kunikida very similar in topic.

That being said, this wasn’t supposed to be an empty promise. This was supposed to be an honest attempt at helping out Kunikida in hopes of being asked out. What reason did he have to ask now? None.

Giving up wasn’t something Dazai did though. There was still time before work ended, and even more before the day did.

Peace offerings were worldly appreciated. Dazai decided he’d make some tea. After all, tea helped with stress, meaning Kunikida would appreciate it even more. He picked up two random packets and started boiling some water.

Lavender sprinkled across the room. It made Dazai’s head drowsy, but all was worth it. Once the tea was done brewing, Dazai poured it into a porcelain cup with a green lining. He walked slowly back towards the office, making sure to hold the cup steadily so nothing spilled.

When Dazai reached Kunikida’s desk, he placed the cup down without a word. Only a smile was present on his face. Then, Kunikida brought the cup towards his lips. “Thank you, Dazai.” he said, taking a small sip.

Perfect, he seemed to like it. Seeing his reaction made Dazai feel better. Doubt started clearing from his mind, now relaxing in the warm flower scent.

Watching as Kunikida enjoyed the tea, Dazai started to wish he had made a bit extra for himself. Then, they could’ve had a romantic tea-party. Next time, he thought.

For some reason, Kunikida kept looking back up at Dazai. Was it because he was just watching the other drink? He wasn’t even sure why he continued to stay put, but he didn’t move.

Something almost seemed to change in Kunikida’s eyes. The tea must’ve been doing wonders, he looked calmer, at peace.

“Your hair is nice…” Kunikida muttered out, quickly turning back to his drink right after.

A small creature banged on Dazai’s heart. The compliment caught him off guard, he had practically forgotten he even pinned his hair back. Though, it felt nice hearing the words in Kunikida’s voice.

Pushing down the meltdown happening in his head, Dazai thanked him with his usual charm. It felt like a lot had happened already, Dazai was ready for a long nap. Preferably until work was over so he could continue to sleep in his bed at home.

During the final few minutes of work, Dazai noticed Kunikida writing in his notebook from the couch. Kunikida was silly to do that near him, didn’t he realize he just gave his whole plan away? Dazai didn’t mind though, he took it as a reward for executing his mission so well.

He couldn’t wait, he was excited to answer. Would it be tonight, maybe tomorrow? Whenever it was, Dazai had secured his date. How fun it was going to be to gloat about it to Atsushi while the boy’s calendar stayed empty.

Right when the minute hand hit twelve, Dazai stood up to leave. He wasn’t fond of staying over longer than necessary and he used to think Kunikida was the same due to his strict schedules.

Unfortunately, Dazai was wrong. Inside Kunikida’s schedule it inked that he wasn’t to go home until a few minutes after work. How long he stayed varied from day depending on what he needed to finish up. Sometimes those extra minutes were from packing up.

While Dazai liked getting his stuff gathered around ten minutes before it was closing time, Kunikida always insisted that work time was for work and nothing more, making him pack up only after he was done.

Luckily today it seemed like Kunikida was ready to leave on time. Dazai was half expecting to start watering plants to pass time, but this was great!

Kunikida stood by the door waiting for him. As Dazai neared, the man’s voice spoke out. “Are you forgetting something?” Kunikida asked.

Dazai figured he only asked because he used to forget his keys on his desk, but he was a changed man now. “Nope!” he replied.

“Nothing?” Kunikida tried again, scanning around the room with his eyes.

Seriously, why couldn’t Kunikida just believe him? Dazai was going to have to tell him it was considered rude to doubt your partner so much. But maybe Kunikida was right, he usually was with a lot of things—especially when they related to Dazai himself.

What could he be missing? His keys were in his pocket, he had his phone and coat. He already returned the hair stuff to Yosano, his laptop was in his bag, and nothing was left on the couch.

This was stupid, he wanted to go home already. What was it he was forgetting? Kunikida seemed like he had a specific answer in his mind. So mean, he was making Dazai guess what he had allegedly forgotten!

Everything he thought about was either put away or on him. He couldn’t be missing any physical object. That's when he figured it out. He chuckled a bit before walking closer to Kunikida.

He placed a small kiss on the man’s cheek before pulling away with a grin. Dazai would’ve never thought Kunikida would be this shy to ask for a kiss. Cute.

Through his flustered state though, Kunikida shook his head. He brought a hand to cover his mouth, looking off to the side.

The paper work. I was talking about the paper work you promised to get done.”

Oh, Dazai looked back at his desk where the blank documents were laid. He sulked a bit, instantly giving away the fact that he did not fill out his promise.

Kunikida pushed Dazai back to his desk, then threw him into his chair. He forced Dazai to finish at least half the pile before they could go home.
