“I’m sorry,” Cassidy says slowly. “You’re doing a what, now?”
Hanzo gives him the most deadpan expression possible after appearing in the doorway of the bathroom. Cassidy had done a double-take as soon as he’d seen the other man. He’d just gotten back to their shared room, quick to lie down in their bed. He’d heard the man bustling around in the bathroom, not really thinking much of it, but here Hanzo suddenly is, standing in the doorway and gesturing towards himself with the slight rise and drop of his arms.
As far as Cassidy can see, the outfit he’s wearing is new and…cute. It’s cute. There’s no other way to describe it. And it should be hard to say so too, considering the man’s a trained assassin.
It’s a matching pajama set, made of striped bright blue and soft yellow highlights. White lines detail plush clouds on the pants, and golden little stars litter the design too, becoming fewer in number the closer the outfit comes to the collar. The top is long-sleeved, while the bottoms end just above his knees, and as Cassidy’s eyes travel downward, they can’t help but widen at the purple and pink slippers Hanzo’s wearing, too.
It’s all very…not-Hanzo.
With all the confidence Hanzo can even manage in this kind of situation, he repeats, “I am participating in a sleepover.” He can’t quite meet Cassidy’s eye as he says it.
Cassidy turns off his phone and sets it beside him, giving his partner his full attention as he sits up in bed. He’s gotta be hallucinating, Cassidy tells himself, yet he’s giddy seeing such a thing.
“You’re doing a sleepover? With who?”
Hanzo glares at him, but the blush slowly taking over his light complexion gives away his embarrassment. Then, he closes his eyes, purses his lips, and sighs. “The girls.”
“The girls?”
“Kiriko and Hana invited me to girls’ night. Mei, Illari, Brigitte, and Lena will also be attending.” Hanzo looks up thoughtfully. “Orisa and Efi as well.”
“They realize you're not a girl, right?” Cassidy snorts, shaking his head. He has to cover his mouth with his hand when he realizes he’s not strong enough to simply tamp down on his bewildered smile.
Hanzo catches sight of his grin anyway and scoffs, turning around and marching back into the bathroom. “I would hope so,” the archer grumbles, and then Cassidy hears the sound of drawers opening and closing. “I think Lucio will be there as well, actually.”
The cowboy gets up from the bed and follows. He leans against the doorframe, completely enamoured by the bright PJs. Pointing towards Hanzo’s outfit with a wiggling metal finger, he asks, “And where’d you get this lil’ number from?”
In the mirror, Hanzo meets his eyes before contemptuously looking down at his shirt, and then back up. He then grabs his hairbrush and deodorant, putting them in a small travel bag next to the sink. “Apparently, my cousin has been planning this. Kiriko… she apparently commissioned someone to make this. She said I needed to… relax.”
Cassidy hums, taking a few more seconds to admire Hanzo. His hair is down for once, and Cassidy has always loved the sleek and soft look of it, how it makes the archer look younger.
Technically speaking, though, Hanzo does need to relax. He’s been running himself a little ragged lately, going on mission after mission without taking a proper break. Cassidy’s been a little worried about it, too.
Cassidy shrugs. “I mean, it wouldn’t hurt, would it?”
“No, but…” Hanzo grunts. “This is humiliating.”
“No, it’s not,” Cassidy admonishes, but it’s at that moment he spies a dragon-themed eye mask and a dragon plushie at the end of the counter. There’s even a quiver that looks like it was designed for a kindergarten class’s nap time. Cassidy can’t help but laugh.
“I should have suspected she was up to something when she asked for my measurements,” Hanzo sighs, running a hand down his face.
“They happy you said yes, at least?”
Hanzo nods, but suddenly, he looks nervous, his eyebrows pinched together.
“Somehow, they were.”
“Aw, come on, Han. Don’t be like that,” Cassidy says. He pushes off of the doorway to sidle up behind the archer, wrapping his arms around his middle. He hooks his chin over Hanzo’s shoulder, watching Hanzo as he scans the counter for anything else he should put in his bag.
“This is ridiculous,” Hanzo says with a flat expression before meeting Cassidy’s gaze in the mirror. “I have to go out into the hall like this.”
“Well, I don’t think it’s ridiculous. I think it’s pretty nice. Quite frankly, I’m kinda insulted by the fact that I didn’t receive an invite.”
Hanzo huffs. “Hana specifically said, no cowboys allowed.”
“Woooooow. And did you even try to defend me?”
Hanzo goes back to scanning the counter, avoiding Cassidy’s gaze, but this time, he looks smug and amused.
“Wooooooooooow.”
“Silence,” Hanzo chuckles. He pats the arms still wrapped around his middle, and Cassidy lets him go. “You are distracting me, and I need to finish packing.”
The cowboy rolls his eyes as he steps back. “What time does your little sleepover start, anyways?”
“Too soon,” Hanzo grumbles. “I am supposed to meet them in the common room at 1900.”
Cassidy thinks back to when he last checked the time. “That’s in, like, what, forty minutes?”
Hanzo nods, frowning slightly. He then looks at himself in the mirror again, the notch in his brow getting deeper the longer he lingers on his reflection. “Maybe I should just stay here.”
“What? Why?”
“This is ridiculous,” Hanzo repeats, placing his bag back onto the counter. He turns to look at Cassidy over his shoulder. “Look at me. What business do I even have at a sleepover with people half my age?”
“I don’t know, but if they didn’t want you there, they wouldn’t have invited you in the first place, Han.” Cassidy pinches the back of Hanzo’s sleep shirt. “Kiri certainly wouldn’t have gotten you all this either.”
The archer simply hums in response, turning back towards the mirror. He doesn’t sound entirely convinced, but he doesn’t argue either.
“C’mon, everyone there loves you. You’re gonna have fun,” Cassidy assures him. He presses up against Hanzo’s back and puts a comforting hand on the man’s hip. He presses a kiss into Hanzo’s hair, too. “They’re gonna be glad you came, and you’re gonna be glad you went.”
Hanzo finds Cassidy’s eye in the reflection again, giving him a quick quirk of his lips.
With an exasperated sigh, Hanzo eventually shrugs. “I suppose.”
That evening, Cassidy is lying alone in bed and watching a movie when he feels his phone buzz beside him, somewhere in the sheets. He debates not even looking for it, but nothing important is happening on screen at the moment, and so he lazily pats around until he finds it.
He finds out that it’s a message from Hanzo and immediately perks up. He opens the message, hoping the man is having fun and isn’t texting him to complain, when he realizes he’s been sent a picture.
It’s a photo of what Cassidy assumes to be the entire group at the slumber party, taken not by Hanzo, but by Kiriko. She has Hanzo’s phone raised above her head, enough for just her eyes and ponytail to be included in the picture. Behind her, though, people are spread out across couches and beanbags, some people even on the floor, doing all sorts of things. At a glance, there’s nail painting, hair styling, face masks, snacks, and video game controllers.
In the middle of the picture, sitting in front of a couch, is Hanzo. He’s situated between Illari’s legs, who is leaning forward, concentrated and with a hairtie between her lips as she braids his hair. One half of his hair is already braided and hanging over his shoulder, while the other is halfway finished, strands of hair wrapped around her fingers. He’s also sitting between Hana and Juno, the former of whom is lying on her front with his hand in hers. Hana’s painting Hanzo’s nails, the cowboy realizes. It’s a light blue similar to that of his pajamas.
Cassidy can’t help the lopsided grin that spreads across his face, especially when he truly looks at Hanzo. He was full of doubts earlier, and yet, in the picture, he looks completely relaxed for once, enjoying himself. Hanzo’s in the middle of saying something to Hana, his eyes lidded as he looks down at his nails, but he’s smiling, a shy wisp of a thing.
Not too long after the photo loads, a message pops up as well. Assuming it’s also from Kiriko, it says, Don’t worry, he’s having fun :)
Cassidy sends a heart in response before immediately saving the picture and setting it as his phone’s background.
