Work Text:
Nights were always slow for Phoenix and Miles. Trucy didn’t usually bother them after nine. Phoenix was always in bed first. He laid and stared at Miles dreamily as he took out his contacts.
A normal person who was in love with their partner in a normal way wouldn’t do that. Unfortunately, Phoenix changed his major to meet someone he’d been in love with since he was nine. He was not a normal man by any means.
“I don’t have to leave until 10:30 tomorrow,” Miles stated. He set one contact in the case and started on the other. “We could go out to i-Jump and get some breakfast before I have to go to work.”
“Mhn,” Phoenix replied.
“Or we could sleep in until after 8:30,” Miles resigned.
“That sounds nice,” Phoenix agreed. Miles rolled his eyes.
Miles hung his head. “As much as I hate sleeping in.”
“I love you too,” Phoenix murmured into his pillow. From the bed, he had a perfect view of Miles’ profile. He could stare at the other man for hours and never get bored.
“Would you bring me my glasses?” Miles asked. He put his contact case to the side and looked over toward the bed.
Phoenix’s brow furrowed. “Couldn’t you come get them?”
“The moment I step anywhere near the bed I’m going to be pulled down into it. I’m not finished getting ready for bed,” Miles objected. As unfortunate as it was, that was a true statement. Phoenix had done it before, and probably would again.
Begrudgingly, Phoenix stood up and grabbed Miles’ glasses. He walked slowly over to the bathroom. “Here they are.”
Miles took his glasses and put them on. Phoenix hugged him from behind, resting his head on Miles’ shoulder. “You look pretty.”
“Thank you, Nick,” Miles hummed. He leaned back into Phoenix’s embrace.
“Why don’t you have to go in early?” Phoenix mumbled into Miles’ shoulder.
“Well, I wanted to go to breakfast with you. And frankly, I couldn’t be bothered after the hours I’ve worked this week,” Miles grumbled.
Phoenix didn’t reply. He simply stared at Miles in the mirror while he brushed his teeth. This was the first time in a while that he’d slept over. “We should get married.”
Miles almost choked on his toothbrush. “What?”
“I want to marry you,” Phoenix stated. He squeezed the other tighter and kissed under his ear.
Miles spit out his toothpaste. “Nick, did you drink anything while you were out with Larry?”
“We went to an art class, not a bar,” Phoenix replied.
“That doesn’t mean I won’t have a charge for them on my card,” MIles huffed. He was very clearly flustered.
“We just have one problem,” Phoenix sighed.
“It’s very like you to propose without a ring,” Miles stated. He leaned down to wash his mouth after he finished speaking.
Phoenix reached down to Miles’ hands and took the promise ring off his finger. He took hold of his left hand and slipped it on that ring finger. “I can’t buy you one right now, but I think that’ll work.”
Miles looked down at his hands and smiled. He turned so he could face the man behind him. “I never said yes.”
With a playful groan, Phoenix got down on one knee. “Chief Prosecutor Miles Edgeworth, will you marry me?”
“Yes, I will. Gladly,” Miles answered. Phoenix stood up and kissed him. He’d been waiting to do this for a long time. Almost 20 years, even.
Phoenix hummed happily. “Are we really doing this right now?”
“I want to go to sleep,” Miles murmured. Phoenix crouched down and picked him up. “You don’t have to do that.”
“But I want to,” Phoenix replied. He carried Miles to the bed and set him down. He climbed over the other man and laid directly on top of him.
“You’re heavy,” Miles huffed., trying to push Phoenix off of him.
“No…” Phoenix groaned. He wrapped his arms tightly around Miles’ waist. “Let me have this one time.”
“Nick,” Miles laughed. “You can let go of me for one night.”
Phoenix buried his face in Miles’ neck. “I’m gonna get married to you.”
Miles ran his fingers through Phoenix’s hair, coming down to cup his cheek. “Are you sure you didn’t have any drinks at that art class?”
“Maybe a few,” Phoenix mumbled.
“How much is a few, love?” Miles asked. His sickeningly sweet tone made Phoenix giggle.
“Larry and I shared a bottle,” Phoenix answered. He pulled his head back so he could look at Miles. His eyes held more love for him than they probably should be. “It was a fancy wine that the lady provided.”
“You drank half a bottle of fancy wine,” Miles stated. His tone was soft but scolding. He loved Phoenix, but there was no telling which coherent thoughts were crossing that empty head of his. Miles leaned in to kiss Phoenix gently..
Phoenix hummed again. He was right where he wanted to be. A little tipsy after hanging out with a close friend, newly engaged, and kissing the most gorgeous man he’d ever seen.
