Work Text:

There’s a soft humming in the air, running electricity making it’s way through every room of their home.

Mingi is currently struggling to fall asleep, something he found to be a common occurrence throughout his last pregnancy over four years ago now. His body is tired and so is his mind, but yet for some reason his eyes just won’t stay closed.

Maybe it’s his worry? Both himself and Yunho have a lot of worries right now. The birth of their Minho, the pup currently sleeping in the room opposite, had not been easy. It had been far from it, actually.

It had been a labour that progressed far too quickly, two pushes that had left Mingi steadily bleeding out on his hospital bed. Yunho had been torn away from him by a few Doctors when the clear severity of the situation became known. Yunho had thought he was going to lose both his mate and their pup that day.

Yunho will never be able to forget watching Mingi use the last of his strength to reach for him. As soon as the door slammed closed and Yunho was hysterical in the corridor, Mingi felt a piercing pain rush up his body and then the world had gone black.

Minho had been born through emergency c-section, the Doctors administering medication to keep Mingi asleep while the careful procedure was performed.

It had been the only way to save both Omega parent and the struggling pup without putting either of their lives at any further risk. Minho and Mingi were under careful monitoring in the room for two hours before Yunho was even told that they were both alive.

Meeting his newborn son for the first time had been somewhat bittersweet. Yunho had been so happy to see him okay, to look into his eyes and to cradle him close, but Mingi was still asleep.

His vitals and everything else they were monitoring had been steady, but still Yunho wasn’t at ease until the evening when Mingi finally woke up and met the newborn pup too.

Mingi sighs gently, the memory of Yunho’s face from that evening clear in the front of his mind. When he had woken up, Yunho told him everything that had happened after he lost consciousness.

He sees Yunho’s distraught face within his mind, his tears, and he can hear his sobs of both heartbreak and lingering panic. His hand travels downward, and it sits on top of the hand currently settled against his clothed stomach in a protective manner.

He and Yunho hadn’t been so sure about this baby at first due to the traumatic nature of Minho’s birth and their previous agreement of one pup is enough- but, ultimately, they both decided to go through with this second pregnancy.

In his sleep, Yunho shuffles closer to the body beside his own, and it makes the Omega feel guilty for what he’s going to do next.

He removes Yunho’s hand from his stomach, and he carefully moves out of bed. He places Yunho’s hand back down to their mattress, leaving a kiss against his mate’s forehead when the older frowns lightly in his sleep.

Half way through the third month, the added weight on the front half of his body is very much noticed by him. He leaves his bedroom behind, closing the door over behind him, and he gazes at the door of Minho’s bedroom for a few seconds before opening it.

Minho is fast asleep, and Mingi smiles gently at him. The smaller version of Yunho has his most favourite teddy bear cuddled close to his chest. He looks to be at peace, shoulders rising and falling evenly. His face is completely relaxed.

He closes the pups door over and heads towards the bathroom, the light was already on. His reflection is changing. His face looks a little puffier than what it had been a few weeks ago. His stomach- well, of course that’s different.

Standing in front of the bathroom mirror, he turns to the left and carefully lifts his shirt over the swell of his stomach. Even though he never thought it would happen again, a little life is currently growing within him.

Another life he and Yunho had created together.

His skin will continue to stretch as the pup inside of him gets bigger. His right hand holds the fabric of his shirt up and he settles his left hand on to his bump. He cannot feel their son or daughter at the moment, but in another month or so he will be able to. It was one of his favourite things, feeling Minho’s kicks.

It most certainly did help that, when the sometimes relentless kicks got too uncomfortable, Yunho’s touch helped to calm their first pup down.

Mingi smiles at the reflection of his swollen stomach. It amazes him, what his body is capable of. There is a whole new life within him, a second heartbeat that grows stronger and stronger as each day passes.

He wonders what this pup will look like. He doesn’t mind, of course, they will be perfect regardless, but having a smaller version of himself would be lovely. A mini Yunho to start their family and a mini Mingi to finish it.

This pup is definitely their last one. Despite all of his worries, he is truly excited to meet them. He knows Yunho is too, the Alpha had been speaking to their baby yesterday evening. It’s what he did with Minho too. Mingi had thought it was a little strange at first, watching Yunho speak to his tummy, but after three or four times with Minho, he got used to it and found it actually incredibly endearing.

Mingi knows that labour will be hard and scary, he knows that the next five or so months are going to be hard and scary too, but he’s got Yunho by his side through it all and so he knows deep down that he’ll be fine.

The hour they spent in their own home before going to the hospital to have Minho, Yunho had massaged his hips, his lower back, had held him, encouraged him, and comforted him through every contraction and the aches that had occurred in between them. He even managed to make him laugh once or twice.

He never left his side until that singular moment in the hospital when he was forced and dragged away from him.

Mingi hears the door of the bathroom creak a little. He looks up and, through the mirror, he sees Yunho standing in the doorway. The Alpha’s gaze is on him, and then it falls to his stomach, and then it’s back on him again.

”Hi,” the younger greets him quietly.

Yunho sends him a small smile, “hello.”

”What are you doing?”

”What are you doing?”

Mingi shrugs small, looking back at the reflection of his bump. “Just- looking.”

”Looking?”

”Yeah,” Mingi nods, “I didn’t- I mean we didn’t think I’d ever look like this again, did we?”

Yunho leans his body against the doorframe. “Look like what?”

”You know what.”

Humming, the Alpha stands himself upright. Mingi turns his gaze away from the mirror and down to his actual stomach rather than its reflection.

“Our baby is in there,” he says, and Yunho smiles.

“They are,” he nods, “I hope they’re not causing you too much trouble.”

Right. Mingi should be asleep. He has no idea what the current time is. “They’re not. Not at the moment, anyway.”

Yunho travels over to his mate, and Mingi lowers his shirt ever so slightly. Half of his baby bump remains exposed, his left hand still placed against his lightly chilled skin.

A chest is placed against his back, and a hand settles upon his one. A quiet voice asks him, “what are you thinking then? A little boy or little girl?”

Mingi hums small. “A boy, I think, but I don’t mind.”

Yunho’s free right hand now rests beneath Mingi’s bump, supporting it. “Another boy?”

”Yeah,” Mingi nods, “just- I just have this feeling, is all.”

Yunho places a kiss to his mate’s cheek, “you look so beautiful.”

”Careful,” the Omega warns, “you telling me that at the wrong time of the month is what got us into this situation again.”

Chuckling softly, Yunho leaves another small kiss to his mate’s cheek. When he pulls back, Mingi turns to the left and connects their gazes. Yunho is watching him with such fondness that it melts his heart.

Yunho asks, “are you sure you’re feeling okay?”

”Yeah,” Mingi nods, “just couldn’t sleep, that’s all.”

”Any particular reason as to why?”

”Thinking too much is part of it, I suppose.”

Sighing, Yunho settles their foreheads together for a mere moment. When he moves backwards, he goes completely. Mingi turns around, giggling softly when Yunho very carefully catches him around the waist with both of his arms.

He cradles his Alpha’s face within his hands. “I didn’t wake you, did I?”

”No, Princess,” Yunho shakes his head, “to be honest with you, I wasn’t in much of a deep sleep.”

”Oh,” Mingi frowns, “why not?”

”Thinking too much is part of it, I suppose.”

Mingi rolls his eyes, albeit playfully. “Very funny.”

Yunho smiles softly, leaning in to rub the tips of their noses together. The Omega feels the centre of his face heat up with blush. When Yunho pulls back and their eyes connect, his worries from earlier suddenly return.

His face falls, his scent sours, and his shoulders sag a little. “We- we’ll be okay, right?”

”We will be,” Yunho nods, “and whatever happens-”

Mingi finishes for him, “we get through it together.”

”Exactly,” Yunho hums, “me and you, yeah? Always.”

A little voice from the doorway that captures both of their attentions, “what about me?”

Mingi looks over at their son, hands sliding down to sit against Yunho’s collarbones. The pup has his left arm curled around his teddy bear. Minho’s kind eyes, Yunho’s kind eyes, are a little watery.

Greeting him softly, Mingi smiles at him, “hey, baby.”

The boy refers to himself when he asks, ”why are we having family meeting but with no Minnie?”

Yunho chuckles fondly, “it’s not a meeting, honey.”

”But then why you all like here? Even the little baby is here.”

”It’s a bit hard for the baby not to be here, Minho.”

”Oh,” the boy frowns, “that’s right.”

Minho then wanders over to his two parents, the two separating to fit him into the conversation better. He places his forehead on to Mingi’s clothed stomach.

“Is he going to come out soon, Papa? I really want to play.”

Mingi brushes the tips of his right fingers through his boy’s dark hair, looking down at him. “Not yet, Min.”

”Oh, he’s taking ages in there!”

”They’re not big enough to come and see you yet.”

”When will he be big enough?”

”In about six months-”

”Six months?! That’s too long!”

”Minnie-”

”Six months is like- that’s like almost a whole year!”

Yunho cannot help but realise, “he?”

Minho says, “my brother is in here, I told you so with my drawing.”

”But the baby could be a little sister-”

”No,” Minho frowns, “it’s a brother, definitely.”

Yunho asks, “and how are you so sure of that?”

”I don’t know,” Minho shrugs, “I just know it’s a baby brother. He’s going to be my bestest friend ever.”

Mingi and Yunho have no doubt regarding that. Mingi asks, “but if they are a baby sister-”

”Well then she will be my bestest friend ever. It’s not a baby sister, though, Papa, it’s a baby brother.”

Mingi feels his heart ache a little. “Minnie, will you be disappointed if you don’t get a brother?”

”No,” Minho shakes his head, “I just want them to be happy and play with me. Little brother would be very nice, but a little sister would be nice too.”

”You think so?”

“Yeah! Um, Papa, how do they come out?”

Yunho quickly turns away in order to attempt to hide the laughter threatening to spill out of him.

Mingi blinks, uncertain as to whether or not he’s just heard their pup correctly. “What did you ask me?”

”I asked you how the pup will come out,” he looks up at his Papa, his chin now on Mingi’s stomach instead of his forehead, “and how do they get in?”

Mingi can see Yunho’s shoulders shaking out of the corner of his eye. “Uh-”

”Is there a small key somewhere? Like do you have to open the door to get the pup inside and then open it to get them back out?”

”Well-”

”Or do you get the baby when you and Daddy have your quiet time? Like when I go see Uncle San and Uncle Wooyoung for a week?”

Yunho cannot help but burst into audible laughter, still turned away, Mingi sends him a sharp glare.

Unbothered, Minho asks questions he has wondered about for a while, “and why do you have to carry the pup and not Daddy? Does Daddy give you the baby? Did Daddy give you me? Is, uh, that what happens at quiet time?”

”I think,” Mingi swallows nervously, cupping the boy’s face in his hands, joining their gazes again, “that’s enough questions.”

”But you didn’t answer me?”

”We’ll talk about it when you’re older.”

”Oh! Did you get a baby from kissing?”

His face burns bright red. ”Bed time, Minho!”

”Did you kiss a lot and then a baby grows?”

”Jeong-Song Minho, it is past your bedtime!”

”Ew,” the boy giggles, “did Daddy kiss you and give you a pup?”

Mingi turns back to Yunho, “any help here would be much appreciated.”

Yunho turns back around after collecting himself and there are tears in his eyes from laughing too hard. “Your Papa is right, Min, it’s time for you to go back to bed.”

”But I still don’t know how-”

”We will talk about it when you’re bigger.”

”Like how big?”

”Like when you’re an adult.”

“That’s ages away!”

”Exactly,” Yunho nods.

The boy pouts and then takes a step back, his teddy is still in his arm. “Can I sleep in your bed please?”

Both Mingi and Yunho reply at the same time, “of course you can.”

Minho grins, “thank you!” He then takes Mingi’s hand into his free one, “come.”

Mingi allows himself to be guided back to his room, Yunho lingers for a moment to turn their bathroom light off. Minho helps Mingi on to his side of the bed, and then Minho pulls himself up on to the mattress and settles himself into the middle of it. His teddy bear lies close by.

Yunho comes back into the room and closes the door over. He watches as Mingi lies down on his right side, facing their pup. Yunho lies down on his side of the bed after having turned his nightstand’s lamp off.

All three, or technically four, of them are beneath the warm duvet.

”Papa,” Minho begins, “when I start school, will you still come with Daddy to take me there?”

Minho turned four-years-old last month, on the 26th of October to be exact, and so he starts school next March. It’s currently mid-November.

”For as long as I can, yes.”

”What happens when you can’t no more?”

”Daddy will have to take you on his own,” Mingi runs his hand through the boys hair, “but don’t you worry, I’ll be at home waiting to give you a cuddle as soon as you walk through the door. You can tell me about your day and we can spend some nice time together while Daddy cooks us yummy dinners.”

Mingi will be around seven months pregnant by the time Minho starts school. It’s unlikely he’ll want to go anywhere when he enters the last part of that month.

An idea springs to mind, “I might be able to go with Daddy to pick you up sometimes? I’ll wait in the car for you.”

”Okay,” Minho nods, and then he turns to Yunho, “is this plan okay with you?”

”Whatever your Papa wants, your Papa gets.”

Minho grins, “like a Princess.”

”Exactly,” Yunho nods.

Minho giggles softly. He then sits up for a bit to grab his teddy bear and he brings it beneath the duvet with him. “Can you tell me a story?”

”It’s two in the morning, Minnie.”

”Please?”

”Not now, baby,” Mingi tells him, “we have to go to bed super quick or the sun will come up!”

Minho’s eyes widen, “really?”

”Yeah!”

”Okay, I’ll close my eyes,” he closes them and Mingi and Yunho watch on fondly. “Goodnight Daddy, night Papa,” and finally, “goodnight baby pup.”

”Goodnight Minnie,” Mingi says gently, “I hope you have the most sweetest dreams.”

”I’m going to dream about playing some games with my new little brother or sister. It- I still think it’s a brother.”

”We’ll have to see if you’re right, won’t we?”

Minho nods as his breathing evens out. Suddenly, he abandons his teddy bear in favour of slotting himself into Mingi’s side. Mingi’s left arm curls protectively around the pup.

”Yun, baby,” Mingi whispers, “come closer.”

Yunho goes gladly. He wraps his right arm around his little family.

”He’s so confident that it’s a boy.”

Mingi smiles, ”I can’t wait to see if we’re right.”

Yunho returns the expression, “for the record, I think it’s a boy too.”

“You do?”

”Yeah,” Yunho nods.

Mingi hums small, feeling his eyes growing heavy. Minho is already fast asleep.

”I think they’ll look like you.”

Mingi asks, eyes falling closed. “You do?”

”Yes.”

A distant, ”how come?”

”Because Minho looks like m-” he doesn’t continue. Mingi’s breathing evens out and his head lulls ever so slightly forward. He’s asleep now.

Yunho keeps a careful watch over his little family, the people he adores most, for ten or so minutes before allowing himself to fall back asleep too.

while writing this, i learnt that baby bumps can appear quicker if you have already experienced pregnancy before. fun fact of the day !
