Carlos Reyes never meant for it to become a habit.
It started small—one cigarette borrowed outside a bar after a brutal case, the smoke scratching his throat but calming the buzzing in his head. Then another after a sleepless night. Then suddenly there was a pack tucked into the back of his drawer, hidden beneath neatly folded T-shirts like a secret he was pretending didn’t matter.
