Work Text:

The note Thing had given Enid only said that Yoko needed to see her urgently so of course she dropped everything she was doing.

She stopped only to tell Wednesday where she was going. She was sure it would be something to do with Divina and not the kind of help her roommate offered.
Wednesday listened while continuing to type and informed her how much longer she would be writing and that she would be playing her cello afterward.

She said to contact her if necessary and Enid gave her a hug from behind, it was a recent development in their friendship but Wednesday at least said she was comfortable with it.

Running down the hall Enid entered Yoko’s room without knocking when she saw there was no scrunchie on the door, she'd made that mistake before.
Inside she was surprised to see not just Yoko but Bianca and Divina as well.

They were sitting in a semicircle seemingly waiting for her, she wasn't sure what was happening but the looks on their faces made it seem serious.

“I got your note, is something wrong?” Enid asked, trying to figure out what was happening.

They looked at each other and Yoko nodded and spoke, “Enid, sit, we want you to know we love, and care about you. This is a safe space.”

Taking a seat she didn't understand what was happening, did they know something she didn't, she could feel her claws coming out.

“Enid this is a friendtervention,” Bianca said, speaking up with the sound of concern in her voice.
Her anxiety came down but confusion only increased, “I guess I could cut back on the caffeine but I didn't think it was a problem.“

“No sweetie, it's not about that,” Divina said smiling, “This is about Wednesday.” An icy feeling shot down her spine, that was always floating in the back of her mind that something like this may happen.

“Is she doing something behind my back again that will get her killed?” Enid said flipping between emotions like fear, concern, anger, and betrayal.

“Almost certainly,” Bianca retorted before Yoko glared at her, “But that's not what we want to talk about.”
Enid felt like she was chasing her tail, “Please get to the point before I have a panic attack.”

“Wednesday has feelings for you,” Yoko said, taking Divina’s hand.

“Of course she does,” Enid said trying to breeze past it, “We’re best friends, she-she's my pack.”

“Enid it's more than that,” Divina said like she was trying to communicate something complicated, “She looks at you the same way Yoko looks at me, only a little scarier.”

It felt like a weight was coming off her shoulders only to fall into her stomach, she had known her friends would figure it out and the weight of hiding it was lifted but now she had to talk about it.

“Oh, that, yeah,” Enid said, either not able to or wanting to say anything of more substance.

“Wait, you knew about this?” Bianca asked incredulously, “You're not dating, are you?”

“No!” Enid said surprised at her objection when she knew how she actually felt.

“So you know she likes you but you're not together,” Yoko said, piecing it together like she was talking to a fourth grader, “So what are you doing about?”

“Nothing,” Enid answered. She knew her empty answers were frustrating her friends but why should they be less frustrated then her.

Both Yoko and Bianca, started talking at once demanding to know what she meant she wasn’t doing anything.

It was Divina who finally silenced them and scooched over to her, taking one of her hands. “Enid, how do you feel about Wednesday?”

“Wednesday?” She knew the answer she'd eluded to with Thing but never spoken it.

“I wolfed out for the first time to save her, then I trapped myself for over a month to save her again.”’ Enid said remembering the key moments the goth had played in her life, “She's my everything.”

Yoko and Bianca moved closer as well. “But do you share her feelings?” the vampire coaxed.

Laugh escaped her throat and then a few more, “She is reckless, fool hardy, and ready to throw her life away for me.”

“But she is also beautiful, sensitive, and emotional . . . at least for me,” Enid felt a tear run down her face, “She drives me absolutely feral! Of course I love her.”

“Then why haven't you done anything?” Yoko asked, realizing the question was a mistake as it left her mouth, Divina glared at her but it was already out.

The emotions she had been struggling to hold in for months all started coming out at once, she didn't have the kind of walls Wednesday did and her wolf had been tearing at them the whole time.

As the tears began openly falling her three friends knew talking time was over surrounded her and engulfed her in a hug holding her until the tears stopped.

Yoko got her some tissues and then they just waited for Enid to say what she needed.
“Wednesday has had two crushes that I know about, one was an emotionally manipulative psychopath and the other was a psychic who has violent visions about her.” Enid said, trying to explain how she viewed the problem, “I'm an alpha wolf, I don't want to scare her away.”

Her friends looked at each other again and Bianca spoke up trying to speak as kindly as possible, “ She chased after you into the woods not knowing if there was a you to find, she's Wednesday fucking Addams, if there's anything that scares her its losing you.”

This wasn't a new thought for her but hearing it from someone else pushed back her doubt but not quite enough, “I just want to be sure she's choosing me because she wants me and not out of obligation.”

“If you want her to choose you,” Divina said smiling with a hint of sadness, “You need to go through the excruciation of letting her know it's an option.”

“Enid this is clearly eating you up inside,” Yoko said trying to get through to her, “You can either do it on your own terms or wait till you explode.”

“Uggghh you're right,” Enid groaned looking at the ground, “I know you're right but . . . I'm scared.”

The room meant monetarily quiet until Divina spoke up, “I have an idea that might make it a little less scary and give Wednesday an out.”

Pacing outside the music room, Enid held a small black box with a white ribbon she had tied in a bow. She was trying to work up the courage to enter the room where she could hear Wednesday playing her cello.
Turning around she found herself facing Agnes with Thing on her shoulder.

“What are you doing here?” Enid asked, surprised by her appearance and worried she might be falling back into old patterns.

“Thing and I just got out of group therapy, we heard Wednesday playing and thought we'd come listen,” Agnes explained looking at her curiously, “is that why you're here.”

“Yes, no,” Enid said anxiously, she looked at the box and had a light bulb moment, “Can you two do me a favor?”

“Sure what do you need?” Agnes asked as Thing gave a thumbs up.

“I'm going to leave this gift for Wednesday,” Enid said, showing them the box, “Can you wait here to make sure she opens it and reads the note inside?”

“Sure,” Agnes said curiously, looking at the box, “Can't you just wait for her to read it?”

Turning red Enid shook her head, “I can't explain, but just make sure nothing happens to it please?”

Looking at the box and gave a knowing look, “I swear on my life only Wednesday will see the contents of this box.”

“Thanks,” Enid said, giving the vanisher a one armed hug, “Just give me a minute before coming in.”
Taking a deep breath Enid pushed open the door and entered the room.

The music stopped as soon as Wednesday saw her, “Enid am I needed?”

“No, no everything is okay it's just,” Enid held out the box like a live bomb and set it down gently on a chair, “I can't explain but when you’re done read the note in this box.”

Giving Enid a skeptical look Wednesday looked at the box and then back to her, “You're sure you don't need me?”

“No, please keep practicing. I promise it's nothing you need to deal with now. Pinkie swear,” Enid said, holding up a pinkie.

This seemed to give Wednesday enough confidence to return to playing her cello.

As Enid left the room she felt something invisible brush alongside her into the room.

Letting out a deep breath Enid leaned against a wall, her part was done now she just needed to see Wednesday’s response.

She had continued to play for as long as she could but eventually Wednesday gave up; she needed to know what was in the parcel Enid had delivered her.

She knew Enid meant well when giving gifts but it always seemed to be hit or miss, she wondered if it was another homemade gift.

Upon opening the gift she found a black scrunchie with a silver skull attached, it was quaint.

If she were to wear her hair down she may use it but Enid knew she preferred to wear her hair in braids so it made her curious as to the note. But unfolding the paper it was less a note and more of a short essay.

At a glance she could tell it was written in the style Enid spoke when she was nervous, far more words than necessary.

Sitting, she began to read.

Hey Roomie,

This is from me Enid, well obviously you know that I gave it to you. Unless I chickened out and snuck in and left it for you to find. Uggghhh why is this so hard to put into words it feels like the most natural thing in the world. Okay let's just start with the scrunchie, you're probably thinking Enid dummy I wear my hair in braids. Though your hair looks beautiful down obvs this isn't for your hair unless you want it to be. Okay here we go I've known this for a long time probably since I first wolfed out but I was scared. I like you and I think you like me. I mean of course we like each other but I mean romantically. So right now Yoko and Divina are distracting me because I'm probably a nervous wreck. I need an answer, if I'm wrong and you don't like me that way you don't have to do anything. Just go back to our room and we never need to talk about it again. If I'm right and there is something more between us leave the scrunchie on the door knob. I'll return later tonight and based on your decision I will respect your wishes. We don't have to talk about it tonight. I’m happy to wait until you’re ready and do this on your terms. You might have noticed I've been on edge, I just need to know whether I have a chance or not.
XOXO
Your no longer Secret Admirer
Enid

Folding the note back up and returning the scrunchie to the box Wednesday looked up. “Agnes, I have need of your assistance.”

At the back of the room the vanisher appeared in a chair sheepishly, “Enid asked me to.”

“It's fine, I need you to find something for me and deliver it to my room without questions,” noticing the severed hand perched on her shoulder, “and Thing, if you could spend the night with Agnes it would be appreciated.”

Full of anxiety Enid dragged her feet on the way back to her room. She could hear her wolf laughing at her, awfully brave locked away.

As she approached her room her heart jumped. She saw the silver skull on the door knob and gulped. “Okay calm down Enid, so she likes you we already suspected that,” swallowing deeply she pushed open the door.

The lights were on, looking to Wednesday’s side of the room her heart dropped, the desk and bed were empty.
Turning to her side she had to slap a hand over her mouth to prevent the escape of a high pitched squeal.
In her bed curled up was Wednesday seemingly asleep wearing the cat costume from their first Poe Cup.

As not to wake her Enid approached slowly remembering each spot the floor boards squeaked.
Enid didn't know how it was possible but up close she was even cuter; she had the cat ears and had even drawn on the whiskers.

Everything in Enid wanted to sneak around to the other side of the bed and quietly slip in and cuddle up next to her.

But no, with all her will power and the wolf straining against her, she held out, Wednesday would want to establish personal boundaries first. Enid was going to do everything in her power to make sure she did this right.

Reaching softly she gently placed a hand on her shoulder and gently roused her. Clutching her heart she watched Wednesday yawn and stretch before blinking and looking at her.

“Enid,” Wednesday addressed her, it could have been her imagination but she sounded nervous.

“Wednesday,” Enid responded nervously, but wanting to move forward, “Sooo.”

She held out the scrunchie and gestured to the door, “So you read my note?”

It felt like the dumbest thing she could have said.
“Yes,” Wednesday replied, even for someone who spoke as little as her the conversation was going slowly, “I believe I followed the directions correctly.”

“Then you do like me?” Enid squeaked nervously.

“Yes, in a romantic way,” Wednesday added a rare smile on her face.

“Ummm, not that I'm complaining,” Enid asked, gesturing at the cat costume.

“If this is to be our beginning I thought it only made sense to wear the outfit I wore when I first realized I had feelings for you.”

Getting choked up Enid swallowed, “So should we talk?”

In response Wednesday yawned, “I'm sorry but my emotional battery is empty, can we talk in the morning?”

“Of course, no problem!” Enid replied moving out of her way but instead Wednesday returned to a supine position lying in Enid’s bed.

“Oh, do-do you want to sleep in my bed,” Enid asked, trying to remain calm, “. . . with me?”

“Unless you think that is moving too fast?” Wednesday said looking back at her.

“No! I mean no, that is the perfect speed,” Enid said, getting a bit too excited.

This didn't seem to bother Wednesday, she just patted the other side of the bed.

Quickly changing Enid chose a yellow puppy onesie before turning off the lights and restraining herself from jumping into bed next Wednesday instead taking her time.

Lying still she waited for Wednesday to curl up to her, she could feel her heart melting and she could almost hear her wolf huffing approvingly.

Then surprising her Wednesday leaned toward her and gave Enid a kiss on the cheek and whispered, “Good night mi amor loup.”

Mirroring her Enid gave her a kiss on the cheek and said, “Goodnight my black cat.”
