Work Text:
“Are you sure you know what you’re doing?”
Ruby laughs as she picks up the scissors she had clumsily dropped before, carefully angling them away from Weiss
“Relax, I used to cut my own bangs when I was a kid, this is nothing”
“That does not make me feel better”
Weiss frowns as she looks in the mirror, her reddened skin from the scorching vacuan sun making her stick out like a sore thumb
(The whole haircut thing had been impulsive. A spur of the moment decision after she’d cried her eyes out in front of Ruby— tired of the heat, the judgment, everything.
Ignorantly, she apologized after that. Stating she shouldn’t be complaining about something so trivial after what Ruby had been through.
“I’m not made of glass, Weiss.” Ruby had told her “I’m your partner, let me help you)
It’s silent between the two of them, the only noise being the sound of her hair being snipped by scissors, and Ruby’s faint humming.
“Can we….” Weiss says, heart thumping “Talk about it?”
Ruby’s brow furrows
“Now, while I have scissors in my hands?”
Weiss fidgets with her hands, keeping her composure as she stares into the mirror
“I’m sorry I didn’t do anything in the Ever After” She swallows a lump “You’re my partner. I should have checked in with you”
Ruby gently pulls her hair back as she snips at another layer, she doesn’t meet her eye
“We were all overwhelmed, It wasn’t anyone’s fault. I should have spoken up, and It shouldn’t have taken me doing that for things to change”
For a split second, Weiss imagines a life without Ruby Rose
Her stomach churns at the mere thought
Ruby continues cutting her hair.
“I thought I lost you” Weiss chokes out.
“I know, I’m sorry” Ruby mumbles— it’s probably the umpteenth time she’s apologized, and it probably won’t be the last.
Weiss wishes she wouldn’t feel so guilty.
It’s silent for a while after that.
Weiss barely registers herself when she looks in the mirror.
Her hair is shorter now, cut evenly all the way down to her neck, and Ruby smiles as she sets the scissors down on the vanity
“Do you trust me with scissors now?” Ruby laughs, and Weiss smiles
“You didn’t do terrible”
“That’s Weiss-ian for ‘you did amazing, Ruby, you’re the best and I love you’”
For once, Weiss doesn’t hesitate
“I love you too”
