Summary:

Link did his best to keep his plans a secret, but he fears it might have gotten out.
Zelda honestly has no idea what on earth is going on.

For loftwing letters 2026!

Notes:

Hiya Dakadiar! Here is your loftwing letter! I don't know anything about Spirit Tracks but I was told Skyward Sword is one of your fav Zelinks so I went with that instead! Here's a little modern SS AU I cooked up. It's sweet and fluffy, and I hope you like it :)

Work Text:

It was supposed to be a secret.

And it was! At least for a while. Link had spent weeks planning this out and he had put everything in place without a single person finding out.

Until Groose stumbled across one of Link's notes on accident.

Don't get him wrong, Link was very glad he and Groose were friends now. But in that moment he wasn't too happy about it. Especially since word started to spread.

And with how popular Zelda was, she was bound to hear about it.

Surprisingly, she didn't say a word about it to him, even as the day arrived. He didn't want to entertain the idea that she hadn't heard about it—she certainly had—but it was kinda nice she was pretending for his sake.

At least the weather was perfect for it—a warm, sunny afternoon with puffy blue clouds floating through that sky.

She came out of the bathroom in a white sundress that morning. There was no way she didn't know.

Zelda actually had no idea.

Something was up, something involving Link, that much she knew. For the past few days Groose had been alluding to the fact that something big was going to happen and it was starting to make her nervous.

Her first concern was that he was going to break up with her, but she quickly dismissed the idea. He displayed no behavior that indicated anything of the sort, and he seemed just as affaction as ever.

When he asked her if she wanted to go in the car with him or meet him there, she had tilted her head in confusion. "Meet you where, Link?"

He had seemed just as confused but had accepted it. "Uh…let's go."

"Okay," She followed him out the door and into his beat-up truck. "Where are we going?"

"Somewhere special."

They began to drive past town, heading into the forest park just beyond the grocery store. Link seemed distracted, talking like she should know what was going on. She didn't.

They parked near the loftwing towers, one of her favorite places in the world. She could sit for hours watching the massive birds soaring through the skies and usually Link would join her. More often than not, though, he would end up asleep on her lap.

At the base of the ladder up, he paused. "Zelda…Do you actually have no idea what's going on?"

"No, Link," She brushed a strand of hair behind her ear, it getting tangled just a bit in her earrings. "Groose hinted at something but I don't have a clue what you've planned."

Link seemed to visibly deflate at that, smiling and gesturing for her to go up. "After you, then."

She raised an eyebrow but began to climb the ladder, pushing open the trapdoor and pausing right before hoisting herself up.

There was flowers. And a light blue blanket covered in food.

Link was quick to follow after her, a satisfied grin on his lips as she looked around. "It's our third anniversary of dating. Surprise?"

"It is? Oh my Hylia, it is! How could I have forgotten?" She turned with a big grin. "You are always so full of lovely surprises, Link."

"Oh, I have something else too," He reached for his pocket, suddenly freezing. "Oh no."

"What is it?"

"Oh no, oh no!" He began frantically patting himself down, turning the pockets of his jeans inside out and rummaging through his belt bag. He even took off his boots, turning the left one upside down and something clattered to the floor. He scrambled for it and had scooped it up before Zelda could see what it was.

Next thing she knew, he was on one knee, with one shoe on, holding up a ring to her.
