Work Text:
Tony had missed Valentines day. Well, okay, technically she hasn't yet, it's still the 14th, but Mattie seriously doubts Tony could clutch up in the next couple minutes.
It's fine, they both live busy lives. Hell, it's nearly midnight and Mattie's only now getting home. She'll call in the morning, and maybe they can reschedule for later this week.
But, considering Tony hasn't called yet, the last thing Mattie expected was to walk into her apartment and immediately be hit by the smell of chocolate and something.. lighter. Flowers. Though, of course, considering Tony, she probably should have expected it.
Of course, Mattie thinks. She sets her bag down carefully and moves toward her desk, fingers skimming until they find the edge. The first thing she touches is a box. Light. Rectangular.. She slides the top off and pops a chocolate into her mouth without thinking.
It's milk chocolate, sea salt and caramel.
"Wow," she mutters. "Apology accepted, Dr. Stark."
She keeps feeling across the table until her hand brushes something soft. Fur. A plush. She runs her hand over it until she reaches it head. Long ears. Rabbit.
There's a slight scent to it, too.. Chocolate and strawberry. Or, at least the cheap, artificial attempt at it.
She picks it up, turning it over, fingers finding seams, tags—ah. There it is. A little button in the paw.
Tony’s voice fills the quiet office when Mattie presses it. Voice loud, fast. A little harsh; Tony was probably leaning too close to the microphone, if Mattie had to guess.
"Hey, Sweetheart. Happy Valentines day. Or.. belated Valentines day, depending on when you get this. I'm sorry I missed you. Work thing. Umm.. Yeah. And this is probably a little extra, I know that too. But I—I wanted you to have something you could—y’know. Keep. And hear. And—wow, I'm getting very off topic. But, yeah, I guess this all just comes down to: I like you. A lot. Love you, even—" Tony pauses, swallows. "Okay, running out of time. Bye, Mat—"
Mattie chuckles as the audio cuts. She holds the rabbit against her chest for a second longer, thumb brushing absently over the spot where the sound box is.
