Hearing it wasn't enough. Heathcliff couldn't help but watch. Whenever he was laying in bed and heard footsteps approaching below, he felt compelled to quietly roll off of his uncomfortable mattress and lower himself to the floor where he could see the events unfold through the floorboards. Each time, though, he wasn't watching Zillah, no, he was watching Joseph. And each time, after they finished and Heathcliff got back into bed, touched himself to the memory, and drifted off to sleep, he would dream about Joseph. Dream after dream of Joseph in Zillah's place and him in Joseph's.
