Work Text:

Tomorrow was Valentine's day, a day where love blossoms and spreads through the air. A day full of love and appreciation for your friends and significant other.

It was Chase and Buddy's second Valentine's day together and Chase was sitting at his desk trying to make plans for what they were going to do tomorrow.

It had to be better than last year's. That was an absolute disaster. Chase wanted this year to be memorable and romantic and not end with Buddy getting food poisoning again. Buddy had insisted it was fine but Chase felt guilty it happened on their first ever Valentine’s day. It wasn't even his fault but he still felt bad that Buddy didn't get that wonderful first Valentine's day experience.

Scrunched up balls of paper littered the floor and table-top as Chase ran his hands through his hair in frustration. Coming up with ideas was harder than he thought and he wasn't getting anywhere.

As the sound of pencil scribbling on paper echoed throughout the room, Chase hadn't noticed the raven haired boy peering over his shoulder. “What are you up to at this hour?”

Chase practically jumped out of his skin, his pencil falling to the floor as he turned to face Buddy who was looking at the paper with curiosity. “Valentine's day plans?” He read aloud, a small smile spreading across his face.

“You weren't supposed to see that!” Chase scrambled to cover the paper with his hands but there wasn't really any use. “What are you doing awake?!”

Buddy leaned against the desk with his arms across his chest, “Well I heard a certain little idiot talking out loud to himself and decided to see what was going on.”

“Oh.”

Buddy picked up one of the scrunched up paper scraps, unfolding it to see its contents, “Seems like you've been busy.” His gaze glided along the paper as he read Chase's incredibly messy handwriting.

“Well I was planning a surprise for tomorrow but I hit a bit of a roadblock.” Chase sighed leaning back in his chair, looking up at the ceiling. “And I guess it's not really a surprise anymore.”

“Ah. I'm sorry I ruined it.” Buddy said apologetically.

“It's fine. Don't worry about it buds.” Chase gave Buddy a tired but warm smile. “I just wanted to plan something better than last year y'know?"

Buddy remembered last year's Valentine's day well. How could he forget? He'd become sick as a dog because he was unfortunate enough to eat spoiled food and wound up with food poisoning. Despite growing up alone on the Victorian streets, his immune system wasn't the strongest being a human again after god knows how long. Their Valentine's day ended up with Buddy needing his hair held back.

While being sick wasn't pleasant at all, Chase had stuck by his side the entire time that day. Checking on him, fluffing his pillows and holding his hand while Buddy complained that he felt as if he were dying and that his stomach was the biggest traitor on earth. They even watched a movie together on Chase's phone. It was a cheesy cliché but it was a good distraction.

Even when Buddy was unwell, they still spent Valentine's day together even if it didn't go as planned and he loved every minute he spent with Chase no matter what.

He didn't want Chase to stress and lose sleep.

“You know,” Buddy began, placing the paper back down on the desk, “I don't mind what we do tomorrow. As long as you're there and chocolate is involved, anything is good to me.” he poked Chase's cheek affectionately, making a soft laugh escape the blonde boy's lips.

“Really?”

“Really. We could spend the whole day just laying around doing nothing and I'd be quite content.” Buddy whispered. He stood up from the desk, grabbing a blanket from Chase's bed and placing it over Chase's shoulders. “Besides, after staying up this late I'd say a day to rest is just what you need.”

Chase couldn't deny he was absolutely exhausted. He could feel his eyelids drooping shut, the weight of the blanket and Buddy's comforting voice making him even more drowsy than he was before. “That sounds nice…” he murmured.

Buddy found the sight to be quite endearing, unable to help the smile that spread across his lips. “I agree. Now I think it's time for you to go to bed. You have circles under your eyes.”

Chase mumbled something unintelligible, already nodding off into Dreamland as Buddy helped him off the chair and onto the bed where it was far more comfortable. The blonde practically melted into the mattress, allowing sleep to take over.

“Goodnight tiny.” Buddy whispered fondly as he gently ruffled Chase's fluffy golden hair.

As he began to leave and head back up to the tower to rest himself, he felt a hand lazily tugging on his shirt. When Buddy looked back, Chase's eyes were still closed yet one his arms was stretched out as he tugged Buddy back towards him.

“Oh alright. Move over.” Buddy playfully rolled his eyes as he got into bed beside Chase. It was a little cramped, sure. The bed wasn't really made for two. But they could make do.

Everything was perfect when they had each other.
