I promise you, I promise that I'll run away with you

Summary:

“God you’re so stupid,” Will says through a gummy smile.

“Yeah but I always make you laugh,” Mike replies fondly.

OR

The party notices Will keeps wearing turtlenecks to school in August. Set in between the finale and the epilogue, but El didn't die and byler was endgame.

Notes:

This one-shot was based on a conversation between some of my friends and I about one of them wearing a turtleneck a few days in a row so credit to them for the idea!

Work Text:

“Will, you need to update your closet.” Dustin slams his lunch tray down on the table causing the whole party to jolt.

“What are you talking about?” Will shoots him a dirty look and Dustin rolls his eyes at him. Max looks back and forth between the two of them, trying to judge what could possibly be passing between her friends.

“Yeah Henderson,” Max turns her attention fully on Will’s shirt now, studying the tight sweater, “What are you talking about, because as far as I can tell Will’s the best dressed of us all right now.”

Will glances at Mike sitting next to him, he catches just the briefest glance at the pink blossoming across his face before Dustin draws his attention back to the discussion. “EXACTLY! He’s wearing a turtleneck for Pete’s sake.” Dustin looks around the table expecting a reaction from someone, but everyone just stares blankly at him.

“And?” Lucas asks him, raising his eyebrow up to his hairline.

“I think Will looks nice.” El says and smiles at Will from his other side.

“Okay but you guys don’t think it’s a little weird that he’s wearing a turtleneck? For the third day in a row?” Dustin waits for a response, but is met with silence, “Come on people. It’s August. Are you not burning up William?”

“I mean I guess I’m a little warm,” Will says, suddenly very aware of the five sets of eyes on him and how hot he really is from the sweater. He cracks his back and feels the sweater unstick from his back where it had sealed itself to his tacky skin. Dustin’s right. He is burning up.

“Yeah right. Fine. Whatever we can move on now.” Dustin slouches in his chair and bites into his apple.

“Okay…Anyways, when’s the campaign gonna be ready Mike?” Lucas asks, and Will can’t help but smile at how Mike’s whole face lights up at the mention of his favorite game.

The rest of their lunch period is spent discussing the campaign Mike has been feverishly planning for weeks. Everything seems to have gone back to normal, but Will can’t seem to shake the feeling that Dustin noticed something like his turtleneck, so will everyone else.

After school Mike and Will meet at their usual spot by the bike racks. Mike casually bumps his hip into Will’s and Will looks up at him in response. “You think they know?”

“Maybe?” Will swings one of his legs over his bike and waits for Mike to do the same. “Dustin was really stuck on my shirt. You’re gonna have to go a little lower and more discreet next time.”

Mike smirks at him and gets on his bike, “We both know that’s not happening.”

Will laughs and jabs Mike’s side with one of his fingers, “I can’t keep wearing turtlenecks everyday, then they’re definitely gonna notice.” They start heading towards Mike’s house, Just Like Heaven by The Cure playing from the radio in Will’s basket.

“Show me, show me, show me how you do that trick!” Mike screams along off-tune to Will’s favorite song. He turns to Will with a big goofy smile caked in the late-afternoon sunlight, and Will doesn’t think he’s ever been this happy.

“God you’re so stupid,” Will says through a gummy smile.

“Yeah but I always make you laugh,” Mike replies fondly. Will’s cheeks turn a rosy shade and he looks forward onto the road.

He wonders if he’ll always be as happy as he is right now. Apparently it didn’t take much, just his song and his Mike.
