[Chapter 1: For (Mad) Science]
Coffee jelly is one of the few things I very much enjoy. I’d really do anything for coffee jelly. Well, almost anything. Obviously, I wouldn’t kill for coffee jelly. Or break the law. But I’m not sure why I’m thinking about it at all. Could it be that I’m eating too much- oh. That’s probably why.
Kusuke was outside of the house, staring up through a window, and operating a suspicous device with a huge antenna. He was smiling broadly, with a face that said Hello litte brother. Do you want to play a game? Kusuo then noticed that the machine had a keyboard. He also wasn’t hearing a voice. The sentences only appeared in his head. What was Kusuke up to?
Kusuo teleported out to the yard. What do you want? “Didn’t I just say that I wanted to play a game? What’s wrong with inviting my brother to a friendly game?” Kusuo stared blankly at his older brother. Kusuke. We’re in our mid-twenties now. Give up the inferiority complex. It’s just annoying by this point. You’ve published your papers and I’ve edited my comics. Just quit it.
Kusuke was a little hurt. His little brother didn’t want to play with him anymore! “Well then, want to go get some coffee? It’s on me.” He’s planning something. I don’t know what, but he’s planning something. Kusuo, as usual didn’t trust his brother. But he wouldn’t pass up some coffee and sweets. Alright, fine.
~~25 minutes later.~~
“So, how’s life been, little brother? Satisfied editing comics?” Yes, I’d say I’m quite satisfied. Many young people want to be manga artists, so I went ahead and did what would be easily looked over. Something right next to what most people want without attracting much attention. Coincidentally, also Dad’s job. What’s your latest experiment? Kusuke was excited to explain what he was looking into now. “You see, I think I’ve figured out cloning. I’ve figured out how to make a synthetic egg cell, an sEC, if you will. It’s a blank little cell, and when you put a full genome inside of it, it starts to replicate. So, if I had this in the right conditions, I could grow clones of whoever’s DNA I sample.” Kusuke grabs a cotton swab and wipes it on Kusuo’s spoon. Kusuo tries to incinerate the swab- but fails. Kusuke has another gadget in his hand. Most of his powers are gone. “Like you, little brother.” You bastard. Why are you doing this? Didn’t all of humanity agree that we should never clone humans? What are you planning? Kusuke hit another button and weakened Kusuo severely. “You’ll see…” said Kusuke ominously.
Kusuo stood up, paid for the bill, and waddled back home. He collapsed in his room until Kusuke’s weak-beam wore off. I can’t let him clone me. If he releases a whole bunch of clones that are under his control… it won’t be pretty.
~~~
Kusuke got the cotton swab and put it in a vial. He swirled the swab until he was absolutely sure it was mixed properly. He then poured the solution into a small little machine with a tube. The DNA of Kusuo showed up on his computer screen. He had no junk DNA- it was all related to his powers. “Perfect…” crooned Kusuke. “Finally, I will have victory over my little brother.” The genes were recreated from the cells gathered in the liquid. Finally, the machine made synthetic DNA that injected into the fake egg cells, and all the egg cells were put in a warm tube with a lining that resembled the lining of the womb. The cells all clustered together and formed a tiny little group. Kusuke set up a camera to timelapse it. With this manner of growth, it would take the standard nine months until the clone would be “born.” And then it had to grow like a standard human. But no matter. This was just a test. He had already cloned several animals this way. The cat in the other room was a clone- it’s not like he discovered this. Scientists had been cloning animals for nearly 30 years, ever since Dolly the sheep was created. But he was the first to discover how to have no other animals present in the process. The tube was promptly sealed and the sensors went online. There was a cloned Kusuo growing. He couldn’t just take advantage of Kusuo’s clones that came from Kusuo himself, since they were under his control. No, he had to make independent ones. He could use these clones to establish peace in the world. A force of super-humans. The perfect humans.
Kusuke didn’t realize they’d all have Kusuo’s neurodivergence. Or that they would be psychologically very similar to Kusuo himself. Which would make them turn against him near immedeately and unwilling to be around people. But he didn’t even consider this, and he would never even figure it out.
Kusuo teleported to outside of Kusuke’s lab. What’s he planning to do? I need to stop him. He burst into the lab and located Kusuke. But he already had his weak-beam set up. It made Kusuo unable to destroy anything, but still be like a normal human. “Hello again, Kusuo. Look at that,” Kusuke greeted, while signing to the clone tube. “It’s a little you. It shares your exact genes. Isn’t this amazing? This is a huge leap in science!” Kusuo was deeply concerned and glared at his brother. You idiot. Why the hell are you cloning a human?! Aren’t there laws against this? He grabbed Kusuke by his lab coat. What are you planning, you absolute moron?! Kusuke only smiled. “I’m creating a perfect army. A force to keep the peace. Don’t you see? This is magnificent!” That’s what the police is for, and they’ve never done a great job. Why would an army of my clones, which could easily wipe out countries, be any better? What if some corrupt bastard uses them to kill millions? Do you want that weight on your shoulders?
Kusuke’s expression turned cold. “This is for science. So I can analyze you using clones. Then, they’ll be an army. Right now, the Mark Zero is growing. The first clone. I will observe it.” Like hell you’ll keep it. You’ll do all sorts of unethical testing to it. I’m taking care of it, because I don’t trust you with human life.
~~Four months later.~~
Kusuo’s phone rings. It’s Kusuke. What does he want?
“Hello little brother. Come over to my lab, I want to show you something.”
~~~
So you wanted me to look at a fetus? Kusuo really didn’t want to be here, especially that there was now a force field that severely weakened his powers. “Aren’t you in awe? Again, it’s a little you- there is no mother or father, no parent at all. It’s simply another you. Technically, it’s not even Mom or Dad’s child.” Kusuke continued to try to convince his brother to be amazed. It didn’t work. That just sounds depressing. Why are you like this? What are you going to do, publish the method? The scientific community won’t like that you cloned a human. “Well, I won’t include that part. Other things were grown in that tube- a dog, a cat, several rats, a porcupine, so many animals. Anything can be cloned, and the lining isn’t difficult to manufacture either. It’s only a matter of size and stabilization.” Kusuo was deeply disturbed, and Kusuke noticed. “The lining and fluid is replaced every single time. I’m not going to do something as disgusting as that. Eugh.”
~~Three months later.~~
So then he weakened me, and now he’s growing a clone of me. It will be “born” in about two months. I also don’t trust Kusuke with taking care of a small child. So, I’ll need your help with raising it since I can’t just quit my job.
“Oh, my. I never thought Kusuke would do something like that. Of course we’ll help you, Kuu.” Does this make me a grandmother? Kurumi was shocked at her elder son’s actions, but secretly excited she was going to be a grandmother. Sort of? Not really, as it was genetically her third child, but would be raised as her grandchild. She still felt guilty about feeling this way. Kuniharu on the other hand was speechless. “alright kusuo, we’ll help.” What the hell… Kusuke…
Thanks, Mom, Dad.
~~Two months later.~~
“Kusuo. Look at this footage. Since the tube is see-through, we can see it changing from boy to girl and girl to boy. Like you. It’s exactly like you.” Oh my goodness. Oh fuck. This is really happening. Oh shit. It finally clocked with Kusuo that he was going to have a child born out of betrayal and mad science. KUSUKE. DON’T GET IN MY WAY. Or I will give you hell. “Well, since you’re stuck with it, plus Mom and Dad have that extra room, could you put these sensors in there? I assume you have a crib and all of those other baby things, right?” Tsk. Fine. Like if you don’t have a million sensors in the house already.
Kusuo stepped outside. A clone cat greeted him with a “mrrrow!” Its little collar read “Test Subject 022.” Twenty one other cats were clones, probably identical. Even so, the little guy was relaxing to Kusuo, and he could hear it saying “Hi, human! You seem down.” Kusuo smiled. He needed something to distract him, even if it was for an instant. It’ll only get worse from here. Probably.
“Hey, Kusuo! Come inside, quickly!” Kusuke shouted with a broad smile. “It’s happening. Oh, and, before you enter the field, incinerate yourself really quick. You probably need to be very sterile.” Kusuo went on fire, stepped into the building, and Kusuke handed him a lab coat, and signed to a sterile glove placing machine. Kusuo let the thing place fresh gloves on him. The clone was kicking against the tube. The computer screen had an alert saying the same thing. It was time. “Kusuo. Get the little cart with the blanket and everything.” Kusuke fished the clone out of the now unsealed tube – it smelled a little ripe. The infant wailed. He set it down in the little cart. “The first human clone. Kusuo, get the baby formula and mix it.” Kusuo grabbed a beaker and a spoon, a baby bottle, and heated and mixed the formula. He carried it over and akwardly tried to give it to the clone. It accepted it immedeatley and started suckling. “Oh wait, we didn’t even check. And… it’s a girl! Congrats, Kusuo, you have a daughter now. You did say that you would take care of her, correct? So, what’ll her name be?”
Kusuo thought for a moment.
Saiki Kuriko. That’s what her name will be. It’s the name I used sometimes undercover and was never legally registered.
~~ One month later.~~
Hey. Dad. I’m hungry.
Well, at least she’s already got telepathy so she doesn’t have to cry loud as hell.
[The formatting style will now change here. Kuriko’s thoughts are in quotes but Kusuo’s aren’t.]
“Daaaad.”
One second, Kuriko. Kusuo realized that even though he had to get up during the night, at least his child wasn’t crying due to her telepathy, like he had done as an infant. She lofted down the stairs and sat on the counter. Kusuo poured her formula into the bottle, and Kuriko willed it over to herself. Suckling on it, she started dozing off. Kusuo scooped her up and teleported into her room. He set his daughter down in her crib. Staring at one of Kusuke’s sensors, a bad feeling washed over him. Putting the blanket over his sleeping child, he walked back to his room to sleep, trying to fight off the gut feeling.
~~~
Okay, bye Mom. Bye, Kuriko. Kusuo and Kuniharu were stepping out the door to go to their jobs. Kusuo was grateful that they didn’t work in the same building. His father was chief editor at his job, while Kusuo was still just editor. Kurumi was stuck with her granddaughter. She didn’t consider herself stuck, though. She was happy. Kuriko was just like Kusuo as an infant. Well, mostly. “Here you go, sweetie!” Kurumi gave her granddaughter some formula in a bottle.
~~~
Kurumi was sitting on the couch, staring at nothing, when Kuriko float-walked towards her. She lofted down onto the couch and sat down. She sat for a little while.
~~~
Kusuo couldn’t think of Kuriko without remembering how she came into existence. How he resented his brother. It was looming over his shoulder all the time.
