Burns

Summary:

Once they had finished off the last of the creepers, they looked up and saw that Techno was hoisting the few remaining people out of the levee, followed by himself. Ranboo nodded and reached for a pearl just as they heard a large boom from behind them, the shockwave causing them to be launch forward. Apparently, they missed a creeper, but what caused their blood to run cold was the rumbling that came after it.

They didn’t even have time to stand before the dam broke with rawr of water and debris.

Aka: Ranboo gets caught in a flash flood while in patrol.

Notes:

I wrote this while listening to Call Me Maybe by Carly Rae Jepsen. Just thought I would mention that.

Anyway, TWs:

Descriptions of burns and blisters, panic attack, nightmares (kinda, more just a really bad memory) and uh… that’s it I think. Anyway, gotta go look at what second degree burns look like so I can write this correctly.

The panic attack starts at “Their vision began to blur” and ends at “sinking to the ground in a heap.”

Enjoy!

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

Tonight’s patrol had been going well. There had been no mob sightings, no random villain (or hero) attacks, and no unwanted cameras shoved in their face. Overall, it had been a very peaceful evening. It was just Ranboo and Techno tonight, or more accurately, Lethe and Blade. Ranboo had been on their respective patrol route, leaping or pearling across rooftops while feeling the summer night wind through their hair. It was pleasant.

They hopped over one more alleyway before stopping to catch their breath and recuperate. They shut their eyes and rested their hands on their knees as they sucked in air in a desperate attempt to slow their heartbeat. They could feel their mind pounding against their skull, the edges of their vision blurring slightly when they reopened their eyes. After a minute, their breathing went back to normal and they could finally stand up straight. They glanced around before settling down on the side of the rooftop, their legs dangling off the edge.

They could feel their vertigo threatening to grab their mind and the last thing they wanted was to be standing if one of the dizzy spells took hold. They gripped the edge of the building, keeping their breathing even as they did their best to prevent their mind from spinning out on them. After they concluded that they were in the safe zone, they relaxed slightly and rubbed their face. They could feel the beginning a migraine aching behind their eyes and grimaced. They should probably drink something even if they knew that it wouldn’t help with the pain as much as people said it did. They also could tell their sugar was getting pretty low if the shaking in their hands had anything to say.

They pulled a few packets of skittles out of one of their pockets, yanking down their mask just long enough for them to pour the candy into their mouth. The thing they struggled to keep up the most when it came to being a vigilante was their sugar. With all the running around and jumping, they tented to crash pretty hard. Their vertigo spells usually got worse as well when they forgot to eat, and they wanted to avoid dizziness as best they could. They stuffed the wrappers away and found their canteen, chugging a good portion of the water before connecting it back to their belt.

They sighed and leaned back, pulling their hood down and allowing their hair to be jostled by the wind. They turned their eyes up to the sky, watching the stars as they shown in the sky, bright and glittering. The moon hung high in the air, smiling down at them in a crescent shape. A few clouds were scattered here and there, but for the most part the sky was clear as it could be. Rain and clouds were the norm in Essempi, so a clear night was a welcome change.

The wind picked up and they shivered, reaching and pulling their hood back up. They signed a little as the protective fur kept the cold at bay. There were some times when they hated the fact the Syndicate dressed like they lived in the arctic, and there were other times (like right now) where they were more than grateful for all the layers. After a bit, they checked their personal phone for any messages from Tubbo, and found none. They hadn’t really been expecting anything since they had only checked about two hours ago and Tubbo should be asleep by now, but they still frowned slightly.

They eventually let themselves flop onto their back and closed their eyes, giving their mind a minute to quiet. They still had four or five hours until their patrol was over and after that they had to work on a project for English. It was due tomorrow and they really didn’t want to ask for an extension, especially since they were already not doing great in that class. Plus, they were pretty sure their professor already disliked them…

Still, they didn’t allow themselves to move for a good while. It was nearly silent, and the smell of concrete and paint filled their nose, causing them to wrinkle it slightly. They had never liked the smell of the city and they still didn’t, but they supposed they got what they had sighed up for. It at least gave them a better chance for a job and an education than back in their old town, even if they got a lot more weird looks here. They just did their best to pretend they didn’t see the glares or hear the comments.

After a bit they sat up and pushed themselves to their feet with a grunt, stretching their sore limbs and popping their joints. They did a few quick stretches before shaking out their arms out and walking along the side of the building. They hopped over the gab, scanning the alleyway below. It was empty besides a few stacked boxes and a dumpster, so they kept moving.

This was how most patrols were. They very rarely got into fights with mobs, heroes, or villains. Most of the time it was just scanning alleys and admiring the stars while they got their thoughts in a row. People always said that walks help with thinking. This was just like a late night walk except they wore a mask, went by a different name, and occasionally got to kick ass. It was great!

They only made it a few more buildings before their comm buzzed with a message. They furrowed their brow and held up their wrist, scanning the words. It was from Blade and seemed pretty quickly written. “One of the dams is cracked and there are people in the levees. Get to Snowchester. East.” Ranboo felt their stomach sink. Snowchester… That’s not good… They thought as they began sprinting over to the levee, following the instructions Blade had given them.

They knew that levee. Of course they knew it, they lived is Snowchester! The dam that kept the water back was actually a bridge and they were beginning to paint a pretty terrifying picture in their mind the closer they got. Had Tubbo or Tommy been there? They shook their head to rid their mind of that thought. Their roommates should be at home. They weren’t about to let themselves start panicking, at least not unless their thoughts were confirmed. They kept moving, even if their sides were beginning to ache a bit.

After a few minutes of running they halted to a stop to keep themselves from tumbling into the levee. They could spot a whole lot a rubble down below as well as a few people, mostly dam workers, but there were definitely other, none worker figures. The citizens were shouting at the them to help, seeming desperate and angry. Ranboo looked up at the dam and grimaced. There was a large crack that was beginning to spew a small amount of water. Reporters and news outlets surrounded the scene, making it way more chaotic than it had any right to be. Between the chattering of reporters and the shouts of the people down below, Ranboo could feel a headache blooming behind their eyes again.

They took a deep breath before glancing around, finally spotting Blade an across the barrier that the levee created. Before they could even reach for one of their ender pearls, a reporter was attempting to shove a microphone in their face. They stubbled back as they were bombarded with a load of questions. “Lethe, do you know what caused this?” The reporter asked hastily. “Uh, no… I gotta get over there so if you could just-“ before they could even finish their sentence they were hit with another question. “How many do you believe will die in this?”

Ranboo blinked. They pointedly didn’t answer that question as they pulled a pearl off their belt and tossed it over. They finally found and trotted over to Blade, waiting for instruction (even if they had a feeling they knew what was expected of them). Blade was a tall person, not as tall as them, but he was nothing to laugh at. He was speaking to a few paramedics in a low voice, his arms crossed over his chest.

“Blade…? Do I uh.. Have a job?” Ranboo asked as they caught up with him, their voice causing him to turn. His expression, even with his mask, was grim as he looked up at them. “I’m gonna need you in there giving pearls to people to let them teleport out. I have Crow on the way, however most of the heroes are preoccupied and I need someone down there now.” He said as he pointed into the levee.

Ranboo felt their anxiety peak, but they didn’t dare argue with the man. They reluctantly nodded and made their way over to the edge. They slid down the side of the levee towards where they saw the largest number of people. As they assessed the situation, it became more and more clear that this was not going to be a quick job. A few dam workers ran up to them, all speaking once. “Can you get us out?” “Is the dam gonna hold?” “What took so long?” “Where’s the Blade?” “Where’s Dream? I don’t want to be grabbed by some mutant.” “Who are you again?”

Ranboo held up a hand as they began gathering a few pearls. They hadn’t used many of them, so they should be able to get most of these people out and they could always make more. “Okay, the pearls only carry one person at a time, so I’m going to hand them out. You have to throw them as far as you can and make sure not to miss. If you do miss, let me know. When you land, it’s gonna feel like you’re gonna vomit, but that’s normal. Just lay on the ground and wait it out. I want kids first, than adults, alright?” They explained as they began handing out pearls, creating a few new ones when their belt came up empty.

They watched as people began throwing with only a few misses. before they could turn to get the people trapped under the rubble, they felt a tung on their pants. They looked down and spotted a little human kid clutching his pearl in both hands. A man up above was calling to the child with a frantic tone, trying to encourage him to throw it even as the guy seemed like he hadn’t gotten over the nausea.

“What’s up?” Ranboo asked as they dropped down to the kid’s level and tilted their head. “I can’t frow dat far..” The kid said, his eyes watery as he pointed to the ledge. He had a pretty big bruise on his forearm which had (hopefully) come from the fall, so Ranboo nodded. “Alight, hand the pearl to me.” They said as they reached for it. The kid gave it over without complaint, and Ranboo could only thank the gods for that. They really didn’t want to argue with a kid about an ender pearl. They wrapped an arm around the kid, shifting him over to their back. “You’re gonna need to hold on really tight, okay?” They said looking back at him.

The kid nodded and Ranboo took that as an okay. They sucked in a breath and dug their claws into the side of the levee, beginning to scale the wall. They could still hear the dings and whooshes from ender pearls as well as the shouting from both people below and above, but they did their best to ignore it. They grunted as they moved, pushing aside the ache in their claws as they finally made it to the top. The levee itself wasn’t very tall, maybe four or five meters, but it was steep and there were very few viable footholds.

They pulled the kid off their back, watching as the man from before stubbled to meet him. “Are you okay? Did they hurt you?” The man asked, never looking up at Ranboo. They did their best to brush off the “did they hurt you” comment as they slid back down and returned to the few people left in the levee. “Blade!” They shouted when they spotted the Syndicate member at the ledge looking in. “Help me clear out this rubble!”

Blade nodded and leapt off the side to join them, moving away rubble and debris. Ranboo froze at the sound of a hiss, turning around just in time to see eight or so creepers stalking towards them. “Keep moving rubble, I got this.” They said as they stood up. The trapped people were panicking even more now, attempting to free themselves and likely getting hurt more than they already were.

Ranboo plucked a knife from their belt and flung it at the closest monster, the thing letting out an agonized hiss as the knife was teleported out of its body and back into their hand. The creeper fell over in a puff of foul smelling gunpowder and leaves. Ranboo closed their fist and created a new pearl, throwing it over the creepers and landing behind them.

They kept a healthy distance from the ticking time bombs, picking them off one by one with their throwing knives as they lead the things away from the trapped civilians. They were quiet certain they knew why the bridge had broken, but the real question was how did these guys get out of the under city? Essempi and its heroes usually stayed on top of patching up any leaks, but they supposed the Commission wasn’t always the most thorough about making sure nothing left the caves.

They couldn’t get a hold of a pearl in time. They heard Blade call out a panicked “LETHE!”. Their stomach sank as they connected eyes with the pig mutant at the edge of the levee. Before they could shout, a wall of water twice their hight smashed into them and they were out like a light.

There was a brief moment of weightlessness before they opened their eyes and they sitting in the lecture hall. They looked up from their lap, spotting all the other students with their eyes glued to the TV above the whiteboard. Ranboo focused their eyes on the screen, squinting as the image finally came into view. They felt their heart drop into their feet as their eyes went wide, their mouth dry as they realized what they were seeing.

They saw a small ram mutant being blasted out of a window in an abandoned apartment building. He wore a fur lined jacket with a hazard sign on the shoulder, and a gas mask hiding part of his face. His hair was bleached with overgrown roots and most of the mask had been blown off in the explosion that had just triggered. Time moved like it was in slow motion. Ranboo couldn’t bring themselves to breathe or even think about anything other than the fact that their best friend was currently falling from a building looking as though he had gotten barbecued.

They heard a collective gasp from all around them, but they themselves remained silent. They shoved themselves out of their seat and booked it out of the lecture hall, their breathing ragged as they attempted to get that apartment building. They found a bathroom and quickly pulled on their costume, not checking to be sure it was perfect before running out of the building and clambering up a fire escape. They ran across the rooftops, their sides burning and their heart pounding by the time they finally spotted the burning remains of the apartment.

They toss a pearl to the ground and stumbled to where they saw paramedics, flagging one of them down. Before the staff member could even reach them, they spotted Tubbo and froze, their hearing fading off into ringing as they watched a few medics load him into the back on an ambulance. The raging fire behind them made hearing whatever anyone was saying impossible to hear. All they could think about was the fact their best friend and husband had just been thrown out of a building and was likely going to die.

Their vision began to blur and spin, but they doubted it was from their vertigo. They could see a staff member to their left attempting to get their attention, but they couldn’t pry their eyes away from where the ambulance had just been. It had since driven away, but they couldn’t tare their vision away from the area. They recognized Tommy’s voice somewhere far off, resting his hands on their shoulders, but they didn’t look at him. They couldn’t hear him, they couldn’t see him, they could barely process his presence. They closed their eyes as if to block out the sight, sinking to the ground in a heap.

They could hear talking somewhere in the corner of their mind. It was a voice they didn’t recognize, at least not at first. They could feel parts of their body burning and aching, like they had jumped into the fire behind them. They let out a small groan as they attempted to shift their position only to immediately regret it. They were lying on their back and they could feel that their skin was irritated for whatever reason… Why would their skin be irritated? Had they gotten splashed by the fire fighters attempting to distinguish the fire?

They squinted open their eyes just a crack, able to make out shades of lime green and black against an indigo sky. They didn’t remember it being night… They opened their eyes a little more as their hearing began to clear and they could finally make out words instead of muttering. A smiling mask came into focus as they managed to fight the blur from their eyes. The shoulders of the hero standing over them relaxed as he stood up straight and called over his shoulder. “They’re awake!” He shouted, footsteps filling Ranboo’s ears before two other faces joined Dream’s.

Right, that was Dream. He was one of the heroes that sided with the Syndicate… Now they recognized that mask. Standing next to him were Crow Father and Blade, both looking slightly frazzled but overall unharmed. Ranboo still couldn’t remember how they had gotten burned or how they ended up here, but they assumed that they were Lethe right now, not Ender and not Ranboo. Dream and Blade both moved away when a few reporters attempted to get to them. The endermen’s head hurt as they began to piece together what they had just seen.

It had been a dream… more a memory. They could feel relief slipping into their body as their mussels released their tension.

“Hey, Leth, you look pretty shitty right now, mate.” Crow sighed as he settled next to them, his wings puffed up and agitated. Ranboo grunted. “That’s how I feel right now, pretty much.” They coughed as they reached up to rub their face and winced. They focused on their hand and furrowed their brow, noticing the bandages wrapped haphazardly around their blistered and raw palms.

“What uh… Happened?…” They began as they forced themselves into a sitting position despite the banging in their head and the discomfort of their skin. Crow Father helped them sit up the rest of the way, muttering something about reckless kids. Ranboo didn’t pay attention to him as they looked around a bit. That proved to be useless since their eyes were still out of wack.

“Okay…” Crow Father began, “what do you last remember?” He asked, raising an eyebrow. Ranboo squinted. They decided not to tell him the last thing they remember was reliving the worst moment of their entire life and went for the next thing that came to mind. “Uh… Walking home after I finished my last lecture… no, I also remember sitting on the couch with my roommates… Right?” they said as they wracked their brain for any further information. They wondered how many pearls they had used for their mind to be this frazzled.

Crow nodded and hummed as he looked around. Ranboo followed suit since their eyes had finally cleared, noticing that they were near one of the levees, which was weird since they didn’t recall leaving the house. They were starting to think they were going crazy or something. Crow Father sighed after a moment. “Long story short, you came out to help get people out of that levee. The dam broke while you were still inside and you got caught in a flash flood.”

Crow Father explained, causing Ranboo to bristle. “Was anyone else inside?” They asked immediately, feeling their stomach sink. Crow Father thankfully shook his head. “Nope, you were the only one.” He said. Ranboo sighed in relief only for another thought to come to mind. “How did I get out?” They asked, furrowing their brow. “That would be my doing.” Came a voice that they very rarely heard outside of the news.

They looked up to see Hawkeye with his bow connected to his belt as he seemed to be distracting a reporter similar to Dream and Blade. Xelqua, the one who had spoken, popped their head over Hawkeye’s shoulder with a small wave. They were a blond vigilante with large wings and an almost cupid inspired design to their costume. Their face was covered by a pair of crown wings, through Ranboo could just barely make out a violet eye.

“Swooped in, grabbed you, and then had Flame back there dry out your clothes so they wouldn’t continue to burn you.” They explained with a shrug. Hawkeye nodded. “Glad to see your up and awake, mister.” He said with a grin. A lot of the heroes Ranboo saw who seemed happy all the time often weren’t, but they were quite certain that Hawkeye was just that chipper. It contrasted Xelqua’s more sarcastic personality well, which Ranboo guessed was why the hero-vigilante duo was so popular. People liked the trope of two opposites getting along.

“Thanks… I owe you my life.” Ranboo sighed as they rubbed their face. Xelqua bushed them off. “It was nothing big. It looked a lot more dramatic than it actually was.” They hummed as they shifted their cerise tipped wings and tilted their head. “Besides, I’m sure if Crow Father had been here before me, he would have gotten you out even faster. So really, it’s not a problem.” They explained with a slight flick of their wrist.

Ranboo nodded and turned their eyes to the ground. “Where’s Flame? I uh… Wanna thank him as well.” They mentioned. Xelqua glanced around before their partner spoke up. “He and Rewind went off to fight Casino since they got a call, but I can pass on the massage.” Hawkeye assured them with a thumbs up. Ranboo crinkled their eyes in thanks before flopping down on their back. “I feel like I got hit by a truck..” They sighed.

Crow Father laughed. “More like a wall of water, but whatever you say, mate.” He hummed as he leaned back against his hands. Hawkeye and Xelqua wondered off to try and keep reporters away. “Is Tubbo on his way?” Ranboo whispered, catching Crow Father’s attention. “He’s almost here, mate. I called him a few minutes ago and he didn’t seem like he wanted to run a few errands before getting here.” He explained.

They nodded. That was good, he should be here any minute then… “Who all is here?” They asked as they looked up at Crow. The man hummed and shifted his wings. “We have Xel and Hawkeye, Dream showed up after you were pulled from the water, Flame and Rewind were here before, but they left and then it’s me and Blade since Rose was busy with a mission. She sends her well wishes to you though. I don’t think 404 was here...” He listed, Ranboo focusing on all the names. Alright, they hadn’t forgotten anyone, at least not that they knew of.

Ranboo sighed in relief only for their next question to be cut off by the sound of “FUCK OFF, JACKASS! THAT’S MY FUCKING HUSBAND AND I SWEAR TO GOD I WILL PULL OUT YOUR FUCKING FEATHERS IF YOU DON’T GET THE HELL OUT OF MY WAY!” Ranboo looked up to see a ram mutant ducking under Xelqua’s wing and sprinting towards them and Crow. He looked more panicked than Ranboo had even seen him, his hair a mess and still dressed in his sleep clothes. He had probably just rolled out of bed or something…

Ranboo let out a ‘oomph-“ sound as their husband crashed into them and wrapped his arms around their middle. Ranboo squeezed him, hiding their face in his hair. There was a beat of silence before Tubbo sucked in a shuddering breath and shifted his weight. “What the hell were you thinking, you idiot?” He hissed as he lifted his head from Ranboo’s chest, his eyes misty and tear tracks etched into his face.

Ranboo gave him a tight smile. “In all honesty, I really don’t remember…” They admitted with a guilty shrug. They ran their fingers through his hair as Tubbo took a few more shaky inhales. “Never scare me like that ever again you fucking jerk.” He whispered as he pulled Ranboo into a hug again. They laughed a little. “I’ll do my best…” They agreed as they rubbed his back. They had a feeling this was gonna be in the news later, but they didn’t care. This hug was nice, plus they and their husband needed it.

Crow Father reached out and rubbed Tubbo’s shoulder. “You both should get going.” He whispered as he motioned to the reporters everywhere. Ranboo nodded and forced themselves to their feet with a wince, squeezing their eyes shut as pain blistered under their clothes. They should try and moisturize their burns once they made it home, but for now they just had to bite their tongue and deal with it.

Tubbo supported their weight as they two of them began making their way to an alley not bustling with people and cameras. Blade trotted up to join them as he settled himself on Ranboo’s other side. “How do you feel?” He whispered, pulling a small smile out of Ranboo. “Awful, but once I get home I can do some damage control hopefully…” They said with grunt as they pulled on one of their burns.

They halted to a stop when Tubbo froze, the sudden pause causing them to wince. A woman in a red hoodie and a man with cyan hair were running down alleyway, both their cameramen struggling to keep up. Blade sighed. “You, get them home, I’ll deal with this.” He huffed to Tubbo as he stepped out in front of the two. The ram nodded stiffly and began helping his husband down a different root, luckily one lacking reporters.

Ranboo understood that they were just doing their jobs, but it was still annoying whenever they showed up so abruptly. They seemed to have no qualms for if a hero or vigilante was hurt… They remembered a time when Hawkeye and Xelqua had been trapped under a fallen building, nearly suffocating to death before they were finally dug out. The reporters had nearly kept the medical staff from getting to the hero-vigilante duo.

Ranboo shook their head as they spotted their apparent, a dingy, sad looking building with chipped walls and a few broken windows. It very rarely had running water, but it was all they and their roommates could afford at that moment. Tubbo dug the keys out of his pocket and jammed them into the door with more force than necessary. The two made it inside the tiny apartment, Tubbo resting Ranboo on the couch carefully before flicking on the light switch. The endermen winced as the brightness abused their eyes, making their already bothersome headache worse. They sighed as they rubbed their face, attempting to elevate the pain in their skull.

Tubbo rummaged around in the cabinets, his expression unreadable as he gathered the water-burn slave and bandages. “They did a shawty job of patching you up.” He muttered after a second. Ranboo shrugged. “At least they tried. Most wouldn’t have.” They told him, causing his ears to flatten against his head even more. “Whatever…” He huffed before returning and settling on the couch next to his husband.

“Where are the worst of the burns?” He asked as he began to help them pull off their cloak and mask. “Uh, good question!” Ranboo laughed as they pulled off their shirt and stared down at their torso. It was covered in blisters and burns. They reached up to their neck and switched off their illusion disc embedded in their choker, their obsidian skin fading to a pale white on one side and their eyes shifting from purple to one red and one green.

The burns looked even worse against the albino side of their body, but from what they could feel, their face was untouched for the most part. They thanked their mask for that as Tubbo began scooping out a lump of the off purple salve and rubbing the cool solution along their burns. It caused them to stink even worse and Ranboo grit their teeth to keep themselves from letting out a pained sound.

The two sat in silence as Tubbo added the cream to Ranboo’s wounds. The quiet was heavy with unsaid words, and Ranboo just about died before Tubbo said a stiff,“Finished.” walking away to put up the supplies he had left over. Ranboo wrapped the bandages around their body until they looked more like a mummy than an endermen. Tubbo returned a few minutes later, flopping back on the couch next to them.

Ranboo awkwardly reached for the TV remote, turning on the news to see if watching the event would jog their memory. The TV buffered for a good few moments before it turned on, the audio way too loud, causing them to wince and quickly turn it back down it a bearable volume. They switched through channels until they found one replaying footage of the incident.

It showed the dam cracking and sending people down into the levee, Blade showing up and ushering people away. It then cut to a clip of Ranboo sliding down the side of the levee and beginning to hand out ender pearls to the people around them. Finally it showed the dam being blown up by the stray creeper and the water crashing into Ranboo with a sickening sound. They grimaced, noticing that Tubbo had looked away. They didn’t blame him…

They watched as Xelqua spread their wings and flew up onto the air, diving down and crashing into the water. A second later, they were plucking Ranboo’s unconscious body out of the waves, luging them over to the sidelines as Flame rushed over to dry out their clothes. It was followed by a few interviews that Ranboo didn’t bother listening to before it panned to a shot where Tubbo was hugging Ranboo. The crew had thankfully blurred out their husband’s face, but they still felt a little sick at the thought of Tubbo being recognized. They switched off the TV with a sigh, closing their eyes and resting their head in their hands.

“I’m… Sorry for scaring you… That must have been awful…” They said after a bit, looking over at Tubbo who had pulled his feet up onto the couch. He scrubbed his face with his sleeve and sucked in a breath. “It’s not your fault…“ he cut himself off as he ran a hand through his hair. “You wish I wouldn’t put myself in danger?” Ranboo finished for him, getting a small nod in response.

Ranboo hummed. “I know. I understand why. If that had been you, I would have been terrified.” They laughed dryly. However, they had been in this position before. Their mind flashed to the image of Tubbo falling out of the building, a shiver running down their spine. The two had taken a well deserved break after that scare, Ender and Nuke disappearing from the media on the rumor of retirement. But then Ender came back as Lethe and the city had expected Nuke to follow, but he never did.

Ranboo leaned over and pulled Tubbo into a hug, resting their head on top of his. “I shouldn’t be mad at you. You were hurt and I’m mad at you.” Tubbo whispered as he curled up closer. “I know… I’d be mad too… I was a really idiot out there.” Ranboo shrugged with a tentative smile. Tubbo shook his head. “No, I shouldn’t be upset with you. You didn’t know that stupid dam was gonna break, I’m just… scared…” He said, his voice wavering.

Ranboo just nodded. “It’s okay to be scared…” They assured him. After a beat of silence, Tubbo spoke up again. “You’re going back out there, aren’t you?” He asked, raising his head to actually look at them instead of the floor. “I am. Water burns have never stopped me before, have they?” They agreed, rubbing his back. Tubbo just shook his head. “You have to promise me you’ll be more careful… okay?” He asked.

“I will, but I’m not god or anything.” Ranboo hummed as they leaned their head back against the couch. Tubbo sighed. “Exactly, so you have to be careful. Promise?” He said. Ranboo shifted their head to look down at him. “I’ll do my best…” They assured him, even if they weren’t exactly sure they knew how to do that. “How about we head to bed?” They suggested, getting a nod. “Yeah, you woke me up, idiot.” He huffed as he lightly punched Ranboo in the shoulder where he knew there wasn’t a burn.

Ranboo laughed. “Sorry, but technically it was Blade who woke you up, not me.” They pointed out, causing Tubbo to roll his eyes. “Whatever, dumbass. Let’s just get to bed. I have work and you have school tomorrow.” He said, sitting up off the couch and helping Ranboo to their feet. At the mention of collage, Ranboo groaned. “I still have that project…” They sighed as they looked over to the table where they saw their piles of notes, their computer and their books.

Tubbo hummed. “You can ask for an extension, let’s go to bed.” He said simply, grabbing their wrist and leading them to the other room. Ranboo pulled on a loose shirt so it wouldn’t rub against their wounds before crawling into bed and flopping down with a groan .

They were asleep before Tubbo even made it back from turning off all the lights. The ram smiled slightly and shook his head, pulling the door closed and slipping under the covers on the other side of the bed. One of the pillows had been pulled into a hug by Ranboo who was curled up around the thing. Tubbo rolled over and closed his eyes, sleep claiming him just as easily as it had his husband.

Notes:

For those wondering, the Syndicate aren’t villains, they’re vigilantes. Some regard them as villains, but that’s because the members are all mutants who have potentially dangerous powers. They still help people, it’s just illegal. Heroes like Dream and Hawkeye (This is a DDVAU crossover, remember) were busy with a zombie outbreak and couldn’t get there in time so they sent in the Syndicate instead. Basically, the Syndicate is a last resort for the Hero Commission and most of the time, the Syndicate just do their own thing.
