My train of thought is interrupted as Paul shuffles and mumbles. “Patrick?” I freeze. “You’re shaking.” Not only is Paul conscious, he hasn’t immediately reacted to the fact he is in my bed. He is also not disappearing. He is feeling strangely real in this stupid nightmare.
His head tilts up to face me, and I place a hand in his hair to gently push it back down as to stop the eye contact. He’s pliant, too pliant. And worse, there’s something weird and subconscious making me play along. “Morning, Paul.”
