Stars by the pocketful

Summary:

Megumi and Yuuji go stargazing together (and it's definitely a date).

***

"Itadori," his head drops slightly as he sighs, "you're not listening, are you?"

"Sorry." Yuuji chuckles lightly. "I got distracted."

Megumi turns to the side only to find Yuuji staring. His big brown eyes are fixed on him and he has that stupid lopsided smile plastered on his face, with some crumbles sprinkled on the side. He pretends he doesn't feel something tangle in his chest.

"What is it?"

"It's just-" Yuuji scratches the back of his neck, lowering his gaze. Then he looks back at him and says something that makes Megumi's heart skip a beat.

"I think you're beautiful, Fushiguro."

Work Text:

When Megumi told Yuuji he liked to go stargazing when he was a child, he didn't expect the other to plan a whole almost-date around it.

Megumi has to remind himself to keep the emphasis on that almost. Because, yes, Yuuji picked a spot away from the city lights, so they can have a better view of the sky, and showed up with a blanket and a bag full of home-cooked snacks, but that doesn't imply that what they're having it's a date. He doesn't even dare to wish it.

Yuuji is kind. It's just that. He has a pure, kind heart and would do anything for the people he cares about. That's why Megumi likes him. Having his big bambi eyes glued to him the whole time Megumi talks about constellations is just a bonus.

They are sitting side by side on the blanket, Megumi pointing at shiny dots in the sky and Yuuji watching in awe.

He wishes they could stay like that forever. Eating snacks, their shoulders touching every now and then, their voices blending easily in the calm that surrounds them.

Megumi is trying his best to stay focused and showcase his astronomical knowledge, but it's hard when all he can think about is Yuuji. The way he laughs, he smiles, or hums along to whatever Megumi is saying. Oddly enough, even the way he loudly chomps on cookies. He used to be annoyed by it, but now it has turned more into a sort of white noise that would be weird not to have around whenever they eat together.

And that tells him exactly all he needs to know about his feelings for Yuuji.

Now that he thinks about it, he's been suspiciously quiet for a while. Maybe Megumi has successfully managed to bore him to death. He should probably check on him.

"And that one over there is..."

Megumi pauses.

Megumi doesn't know what he was expecting, but certainly not this. His eyes go wide in shock and words start to fail him as he manages to utter a single, strained sound.

"What?"

Yuuji chuckles again.

"Well, you were talking about stars and I kept picturing them as we draw them, with the pointy ends, you know?"

Megumi nods, signaling Yuuji to go on, secretly amused by how his mind works.

"That made me think of your hair."

Megumi raises an eyebrow.

"I know, sounds crazy, but it makes sense, I promise. Because it made me look at you and then I started noticing things and that's how I got distracted."

Yuuji's explanation makes things sound so easy and straightforward. Like they are a natural consequence of one another.

Like it's natural to start thinking that your best friend is beautiful while you're stargazing together.

Megumi sighs, unsure of where this conversation will lead them.

"What kind of things?"

"Well, like..." Yuuji absentmindedly plays with the blades of grass poking at the edge of the blanket.

"Like your hair. It looks so shiny in the moonlight, I bet it feels silky and..." he raises a hand and, without a warning, brushes his fingers on the side of Megumi's head.

"Soft." Yuuji declares.

Megumi is frozen in place. His breath hitches at Yuuji's touch. Usually he's not a huge fan of physical contact, but the gesture hits different when it's coming from Yuuji. Again, it's unexpected and yet so... gentle.

"Go on." He mutters.

"Your eyes." Yuuji inches closer, carefully inspecting them before adding anything else.

Megumi gulps. Hopefully not too loud.

"What about them?"

"They are the same color of the sky, in the dark. I love that shade of blue."

Something warm blooms in Megumi's chest, unfolding right as Yuuji uses that word to describe the color of his eyes.

He probably didn't even do it on purpose, but it's enough to give Megumi a little bit of hope.

Hope not to jinx whatever is happening between the two of them when he places his hand a little too close to Yuuji's own, making their pinkies brush.

But Yuuji doesn't budge, his hand stays put on the blanket and he keeps on talking.

"Also, you have like crazy long eyelashes. Not that I didn't notice before, it's just so stark here from the side."

Megumi doesn't know what to say. Doesn't know how to act. But he knows how he feels about his best friend handing out compliments to him like it's nothing, and he's really grateful that they're in the dark, because he can feel his whole face on fire.

"I'm blabbering too much. You were explaining something interesting and now we're completely off track, I'm sorry." Yuuji apologizes.

"Don't be."

Megumi doesn't know when he started moving towards Yuuji, he just notices it now, seeing how close they are.

He feels like a planet gravitating towards the sun, spinning faster and faster, unable to divert from its route.

Yuuji is his sun, and while he would normally be okay just floating in his orbit, now Megumi feels a pull so strong he expects to crash into him at any given second.

He can distinctly feel his heart drumming against his ribs and his blood rushing to flush his face up to the tip of his ears.

Screw it.

He stops fighting the pull and closes the distance between them, planting a small kiss right above the corner of Yuuji's mouth.

As he slowly backs away, Yuuji's eyes are wide with surprise.

Oh no.

He shouldn't have done that. Maybe he misread the whole situation, maybe what he did was stupid because, who knows, Yuuji plans stargazing dates with all his friends, calls them beautiful in a platonic way and doesn't actually want them to kiss him. In life you're supposed to take risks, sure, but something in the back of his mind is screaming at him that he shouldn't have taken this one.

Then something happens, and that's all he needs to be dragged out of his doom spiral.

Yuuji dives forward, grabs the front of Megumi's sweatshirt and returns the kiss, on the lips, this time.

It's fast and unexpected and they both stumble to the ground, where Megumi hits his head.

"Shit, are you okay?" Yuuji promptly asks.

Megumi nods, a smile growing big on his face as he chases Yuuji's lips once again.

He wraps his arms tightly around him and takes his time to kiss him properly.

He wants to engrave this moment in his brain so he can treasure it forever. Yuuji's scent, how his weight sits on top of him, the way his hair feels when Megumi runs his hands through it, his lips tasting like chocolate because of the cookies.

It's beyond anything he could ever imagine and exactly everything he always wanted but never dared to wish for.

When they part, Yuuji smiles down at him.

The only way Megumi can think of describing his smile is as if the boy was lit from within. And Yuuji's light blurs out his whole periphery, he has known that since the moment they met.

"You know, I was right." He says, still inches away from his lips.

Megumi holds his face, his thumb slowly rolling over Yuuji's cheek.

"About what?"

"You really are beautiful, Fushiguro."

Megumi scowls and shoves him gently.

"Shut up."

Yuuji laughs and kisses him again. Megumi can feel his smile poking through the whole time and it's infectious. So he can't help but do the same.

Yuuji rolls to his side on the blanket, then scoots closer to rest his head on Megumi's shoulder.

Megumi reaches for his hand and their fingers lace together. Like it's natural. Because maybe it is. And maybe this- them can be a real thing, after all.

So when Yuuji excitedly points to the sky to show him a shooting star, Megumi turns to look at him while he makes his wish.

And, for the first time, he allows himself to believe they have a chance at staying like this forever.

Notes:

Hi!

No Itafushi Kaisen this week? I think not! Have this sweet little moment where they're happy together and nothing can hurt them.

P.s: the title is an obvious nod to the song Snow on the Beach, and if you notice some other reference to the lyrics scattered through the fic it's absolutely intentional (and we should be friends).

See you next time 💙
