Work Text:
Working a Summer job was the last thing Mike saw for himself, but when Will mentioned working for Surfer Boy Pizza along with Jonathon and Argyle once Starcout Mall reopened? He had to find a way to pass time.. and be near Will, of course. Max started working for Scoops Ahoy since Robin and Steve weren't going back there, for obvious reasons, so Mike took up the second spot.
It was quite fun, he had to admit that. But fucking hell, these kids were assholes. It was nice when their friends stopped to say hi, but anyone else? Mike sometimes had to go into the backroom just to bring himself together again. Was he like that at their age? Probably, but whatever, it was different when he had an attitude.
One of the good things was that Surfer Boy Pizza was quite close to Scoops Ahoy, it was only a few steps away and you could easily get there through the staff only area. The same way they used to make Steve sneak them into the movies.
Mike rested his elbows against the counter, holding his chin in his palms, then let out a dramatic sigh. "This is so boring. How did Steve and Robin not die just standing around waiting for assholes to come and beg for icecream?"
"Maybe because they're actually fun, unlike you who can barely ask what flavor icecream someone wants before glaring at them."
Max's smirk said it all, she knew she was annoying Mike and he told himself he wouldn't fall into her trap. But then again, Mike's never been good at listening to people, even himself.
"Oh shut up, they don't annoy you too?" He turned around to lean his back against the counter now, crossing his arms over his chest and raising an eyebrow.
"They do, I'm just sensible enough to ignore it. You're a big baby, Wheeler."
She laughed when Mike gave her the same look he gave some of the customers, a blunt look with narrowed eyes and furrowed brows.
He sighed and rolled his eyes, yet couldn't help but let out a small chuckle.
More was about to escape out of his lips, a stupid argument that would've definitely embarrassed himself and made no sense. Especially not when Max was the one to hold the top spot for being someone who knew how to get under Mike's skin. The bell went before he could say anything.
He looked over his shoulder, expecting a group of early teenagers with shit eating grins, just waiting to make fun of Mike like he was famous for being the guy they had to pick on, but saw Will.
That woke him up. He instantly turned to face Will, already smiling as if he was an excited dog seeing his owner get home.
"Hi,"
"Hey, Will. You— why are you here?"
"I'm on a break, Jonathan and Argyle are taking care of the shift for now. I don't think I should really trust them alone for too long though." Will let out a fond sigh, melting into a giggle which Mike couldn't help but laugh along with.
"My break's about to start, if you wanted to just.. sit somewhere. Or stand. Maybe even walk?" Well, Mike's never been the best at flirting. Max made a sound of protest, traces of amusement intertwining with it, so Mike looked at her and cleared his throat. "Right, Max? You can handle being alone for a bit, since you're oh so sensible."
Throwing her own words right back in her face, a move very common for Mike Wheeler.
She groaned and rested a hand on her hip, but nodded, which earned a proud smile to spread across Mike's face.
His eyes locked onto Will's again as he gestured to the back of the store.
Will walked first and Mike gave her a sign of prayer hands as a thanks, to which she tapped her wrist as if there were a watch rested there. He wasn't on break, neither was it anywhere near close. His break was in an hour. Will didn't need to know that.
"I'm glad you and Max can work together without ending up fighting, me and Lucas really thought one of you would've quit by now." Will said as Mike opened the door for him, stepping back into the hallway.
"Yeah, she is kinda cool. Just don't tell her I said that or she'll think she's won." Mike hummed and shut the door behind him, leaning against the wall opposite Will.
They both chuckled and Will shook his head, though Mike's laugh faded before Will's. He was busy admiring him. Even under this light, he looked beautiful. The uniform suited him, his eyes were glistening whenever he smiled and Mike wanted to just grab onto him then never let go. Ever.
"Yeah, your secret's safe with me." Will muttered, looking back up to Mike.
A moment passed where that was all they done, stare at each other, before Will stepped forward. Close enough for his scent to fill up Mike's nose, making him tense up. It was embarrassing, really. He grew up with Will, he knew that scent better than anything yet it always got his mind racing.
Will's hand reached up to fix the hat on Mike's head, fingers brushing the dark curls blessing Mike. It was a casual touch, but they both knew it was more.
Mike eventually sighed and wrapped his arms around Will's waist, pulling him closer. Will's hands rested on Mike's shoulder for balance, then wrapped his neck.
"Didn't even last five minutes." Will teased in a low tone, tilting his head.
"You started it, don't blame me." Mike argued, but didn't let go or move away. Instead, he pressed his lips against Will's and ignored the shiver running through his spine at the feel of Will's soft lips. It wasn't something completely new, but still a thing that had started only recently. He couldn't blame himself for getting lost in it.
His tongue slipped into Will's mouth when he felt him gasp, taking it as an opening. If they weren't still in public, where anyone could come and see them, he would've been doing so much more. He would've loved to see Will begging to be touched and being able to choose when he'd allow it to happen.
It felt as if time stopped whenever they kissed, giving Mike all the time in the world to feel Will's tongue gliding against his own, to feel the warmth of his mouth and hear the hitches of his breath. It was perfect, honestly.
That was until Max decided to knock on the door, making them both jump away from each other.
"Few more minutes, it's nearly rush hour."
Fuck rush hour and fuck employment, was the only thing Mike could think right now. I mean, seriously, rush hour was stupid and he hated it. Sure, it helped them and the business, but social skills were never Mike's strong suit.
He was grateful that Max knocked though, it was clear she knew they weren't just talking. He'd knock if she was back here with Lucas too, so fair enough.
"I thought it was nearly your break?" Will asked, using that tone where Mike knew he was caught out for his bullshit.
"Well— I mean, it technically is nearly my break."
"How long?"
"Uh, it's gone down since I offered to come back here with you."
"Mike, just say it."
"An hour, maybe less."
Will looked as if he wasn't surprised, then covered his mouth with his hand to stifle a laugh. It didn't work too well and his snickers had broken past the barrier of his hand. "Oh my God, Mike. You should've just told me to wait and I would've."
"What? Wait for you? I think we've waited for each other long enough that we don't need to wait any more, don't you think?"
Will gave Mike a 'really?' look, yet still walked closer again to give his cheek a soft kiss. "You talk too much."
Mike smirked and shrugged his shoulders.
"I'll go check on Jonathan and Argyle, you know how they are. Get back to work, I'm not even that far."
"Fine, fine. Meet me here once our shifts end, okay?"
"I know. I love you."
Mike's eyes softened as his lips twitched upward. "I love you too."
He pushed open the door and walked back into Scoops Ahoy, making his way over to Max who was serving icecream.
"Have fun on your fake break?" It was definitely meant to mock Mike, but he took it in pride.
"Yeah, until someone knocked. Whoever that was is totally so annoying."
She gave him a glance and huffed, passing the icecream to the customer. "I personally think whoever it was is an intelligent person and better than you."
Mike didn't care about the teasing as much as he usually would, his mind was still on Will.
