Chapter Text
The day started like any other. Gus and Wally woke up bright and early and immediately chose to rot their brains with television as they waited for Dr. Chimpsky to possibly give them a new mission. As they flipped through the TV channels, nothing seemed interesting enough to watch. They needed something they've never seen before, so Gus kept flipping through channels until finally they came across the channels they never thought to watch, one of these channels being about the history of medical procedures. Today's episode topic? Lobotomies.
Gus and Wally watched in awe as the procedure was explained. An ice-pick inserted through the eye socket into the brain. This sounded painful, but on the TV, the patients seemed happy and calm after the procedure.
"You know, Wally....Now, I'm just spitballing here, but do you think this 'lobotomy' thing could fix Yay-Ok?" Gus turned to Wally, who was slump on the couch before he sat upright and looked back at Gus "Fix Yay-Ok? How is he broken?" Wally questioned, tilting his head.
"Well....do you notice how hes been kind of off lately?" Gus continued, but he was only met with a stare from Wally. He continued further. "What I mean is- do you notice how he's been so bossy lately? It's like his bossy-processors are firing hard lately. It must be a bug in his code or something." Wally thought to himself, rubbing his chin comically, before remembering the instance in which Yay-Ok didn't let them bake cookies in one second by setting the oven at 40,000 degrees.
"Hey...Yeah, youre right! That IS weird! I guess trying out this 'lobotomy' thing couldn't hurt, right?" Wally said, before a voice came from behind them
"Rocket Monkeys! Ayy...... What did I tell you about watching TV all day? Even if Dr. Chimpsky hasn't assigned anything yet, theres still work to do around the ship!" exclaimed Yay-Ok. Gus and Wally looked at the robot before then looking at eachother and giving eachother a nod.
The decision had been made.
---
It was time to carry out their plan. The two monkeys snuck into the quiet room, ice-pick in hand. They were missing a mallet, but they decided they would just make-do. Yay-Ok was on his bed, lightly snoring as robots do as Gus and Wally approach closer.
"Are you sure we have to do this? I mean look- he's sleeping so peacefully!" Wally whispered, stopping in his tracks and looking at Gus
"Absolutely positive, Wally. I've never been more sure, this robot has got a virus. And you saw how he argued with us when we were simply just doing as monkeys do! That HAS to be a bug in his code." Gus replied, still keeping his voice low "Trust me bro, we're HELPING him."
"But can't we just tell Dr. Chimpsky and he can take care of it?-" Wally spoke before being cut off by a hushing finger in his face. "Do you want Yay-Ok to be like this FOREVER? A boring, no-fun, lousy party-pooper? We gotta do this, you saw how it worked on the TV! He'll be fine, it's not like we're killing him." Gus reassured Wally as he looked down at his feet before looking back up at Gus reluctantly. "I guess....Ok fine. Let's do it." Wally said as he finally agreed.
The two were hovering over Yay-Ok, practically breathing over the robot. "Wally, get on top of Yay-Ok so you can hold him down!" Wally nodded as he slowly climbed ontop of Yay-Ok and got into position. But just as he was in place, a voice came from right below him.
"Rocket Monkey Wally, is that you..?" Yay-Ok groggily said, recognizing the monkey's touch.
"Uhh....bro? I think he's awake now." Wally said "Obviously I know that!" yelled Gus before turning to Yay-Ok and speaking once more. "Don't worry Yay-Ok, Dr. Chimpsky just sent us to preform a mandatory check-up on you to see what's wrong with your code. We'll have you right back to normal!"
"A check-up? Nono, Gentlemans! Whatever Dr. Chimpsky told you, you must've misunderstood. He would take care of the issue himself if there was something wrong with me, right?" Yay-Ok said, still waking up as he goes to rub his eyes before realizing he's held down.
"Right! Thats what I tried to tell Gus but-" Wally said before a swift punch in the shoulder from Gus shut him up. "Don't worry, he put us through training. We're certified robo-professionals!"
Yay-Ok burst into laughter, before sighing and catching his breath. "You two? Robo-professionals? No chance, Rocket Monkeys! Dr. Chimpsky would never trust you two with that title anytime soon! So tell me, what are you REALLY doing? And uh.....why is Rocket Monkey Wally on top of me..?"
"Well.....me and Gus were watching TV....and we learned about something called a lobotomy! And Gus said that since you've been acting weird lately, that that's what we should do." Gus facepalmed before sighing and mumbling disappointedly. "Way to spoil the whole plan."
Yay-Ok's smile immediately faded. "Lobotomy? Uh, are you two sure you know what that big word means?" Gus and Wally looked at eachother before looking back at Yay-Ok, who had a unsure look on his face. "We're positive!" Gus replied as he went closer, positioning the ice-pick right next to the robot's eye. Since Yay-Ok didn't look like the guy on TV, it was a bit hard to get exact measurements right, but they had the gist of the idea and ran with it.
"Gentlemans, you don't have to do this- I assure you NOTHING is wrong with my code!" Yay-Ok yelped, trying to move his arms away from Wally's tight grip. "Shhh....It's ok, brobot! This won't hurt you! I'm pretty sure robots cant even feel pain!" Wally said in an attempted soothing voice. The look on Yay-Ok's face changed from nervous to terrified. "Rocket Monkey Wally, I assure you that we most DEFINITELY CAN feel pain!" He pulled once more, trying to shake the monkey off of him but his strength processors were still waking up or something. He looked at Wally with a worried look, but Wally looked away.
"Ready, brobot?" Gus said.
"NO, NO!!! MOST DEFINITELY NOT!!" he panicked, pulling his arms once more but for nothing, as Wally wasn't letting go.
"3......"
"NO!! LET'S TALK ABOUT THIS- YOU'RE MY MONKEYS! COME ONNN...."
"2....." Wally's grip on the robot slid to the root of his arms. Yay-ok's arms began to flail, swinging around as if trying to swat something away.
"COME ON!! THE JOKE IS OVER, ROCKET MONKEY GUS!!"
"1!!!"
The ice-pick was plunged into the robot's screen. His hands immediately jerked up and grabbed Wally's arm, almost as a call for help while they shook. Wally freaked out but kept his grip on the base of the arm out of fear of Yay-ok going rogue last second.
The robot continued to grasp Wally's arm, as if aiming to cut off circulation, but his grip slowly started to loosen as his arms grew heavier and limper. Eventually, his arms dropped to his sides, and Wally finally let go.
"Welp, that's done." Gus said, yanking the ice-pick out and dropping it before dusting off his hands. "What now?" Wally questioned. "Well, if my definitely calculated calculations are right, when we power him back on he should be back to normal!" said Gus with confidence in his voice. There was no way this could go wrong! Right? Totally.
After working together to flip Yay-Ok's body upright, the two monkeys sat and took a look at the body, trying to find an "on" switch. After a moment, Wally snapped his fingers in realization as he opened up Yay-Ok's chest cavity and located the switch on the side. He pressed the switch to off (since Yay-Ok had been shut off forcefully), then switched it back to on, closed Yay-Ok's chest, and waited for him to boot up
The two Rocket Monkeys looked at Yay-Ok's broken yet glowing blank screen before Gus turned to Wally.
"How did you know that was there?" He asked.
"That switch? Oh, Yay-Ok lets me play with his wires and I see it everytime his chest is open. Why do you ask?"
Gus shut the conversation down immediately, unsure as to if he wanted to know any more details.
After a while, Yay-Ok finally finished booting up. His screen displayed a face, but something was off about it. His eyes looked lopsided, as if neither eye knew where to look. As for his mouth, it seemed to curl up into an awkward smile. He appeared as if he didn't have a single thought in his robot brain.
"Yay-Ok! You're back!" exclaimed Gus. He let out a sigh of relief as if he wasn't confident that his procedure would've really worked.
"How can we be sure that he's back to normal?" asked Wally. Gus thought to himself, then an idea came to him. "Hey Yay-Ok! I'm thinking.... why don't we dismantle the ship and put it back together?"
No response.
"I really like the idea of building another doombot! What do you think, Yay-Ok?"
No response yet again.
"See? No more bossybot! I'd consider this procedure a success." Gus said, placing his hands on his hips. Wally looked at the robot once more, frowning slightly at the sight of the broken screen and absentminded facial expression on the robot.
"What do we do about his broken screen?" Wally asked, looking at Gus. Gus thought for a second. "Uh.. I'm pretty sure theres some spare screens in the storage room? But we can look for those tomorrow, I'm tired after our hard work. Let's go, bro." He said as he hopped off of Yay-Ok's bed and headed for the door. Wally stood still, looking at Yay-Ok. "...Goodnight, Yay-Ok!" He said, before finally hopping off of the bed himself and heading for the door behind Gus.
Once the door closed, Yay-Ok sat there, mindlessly existing before flopping backwards. Drool ran down his face before he closed his eyes, continuing his slumber as if nothing happened.
