Work Text:
Momma smelled like leather and soap and something warm that always made Peter feel safe.
He stood on the bed in Remy’s room, fingers curled into the blanket, watching her put on her jacket.
Mission jacket. he didn't like that jacket. Always steeling his mother from him. One day, after he made sure the pretty lady and her weird accent husband won't give him back to hydra, he was burning that jacket down.
Fucking annoying unholy demoniac jacket.
he hopped the jacket burned down and momma rogue was so mad she wouldn't leave his side because of that
he was losing against a jacket. Cause that jacket meant she was leaving.
His stomach twisted.
“You gonna be good for me while Ah’m gone?” Rogue asked softly
Peter nodded immediately.
“Yes, Momma.”
She smiled, the real smile, and leaned down to kiss his forehead.
Peter liked her mom's real smile, not the polite, forced to do, smile. The real one, the one that make her eyes went littler, almost closed, smiling almost at her full teeth, her cheeks going up. Yeah he loved seeing her mother smile, especially when he was the cause of it.
Rogue always felt Warm, Safe, loving.
Her white hair mixed with her brown-redish colores hair, always curled perfectly, her green eyes that you couldn't stop looking at.
Yeah, his momma was the prettiest lady ever. Her husband, his dad Remy, was a very lucky man. He was going to stick with them until the end of times, yeah, Peter had decided that already.
“Ah won’t be gone long, sugar.”
Peter nodded again.
Then she added, casually, like it wouldn't shattered all Peter's world, his entire plans.
“Remy’s gonna take care of you for both of us. Mah boyfriend’s real good at that.” she said proudly.
The world tilted, his mind went blank, he couldn't hear rogue anymore.
Boyfriend.
The word echoed in his head.
Boyfriend.
Boyfriend.
Boyfriend.
boyfriend?
BOYFRIEND?!
boyfiend.
Peter froze.
Momma kept talking, unaware she had just broken something inside his brain. Fucking hell boyfriend?
“If you need anything, you go to him, alright? He’s got you.”
Boyfriend.
Temporary.
Not husband.
Not permanent.
People who weren’t permanent could leave.
People left when you were bad.
His chest tightened.
He wasn't a good kid. And his momma and dad weren't married either. oh, he couldn't stick with them till the end of the words then.
fucking jacket. It was all the fault of the jacket.
“…okay,” he whispered.
She kissed his forehead again.
“Ah love you.”
“I love you too, Momma.”
Then she left.
The door closed behind her, the silence filled the room.
And the word kept repeating in his head.
Boyfriend.
Boyfriend.
Boyfriend.
Boyfriend
boyfrien
BOYFRIEND.
Like an insult.
Like something wrong.
Remy was his dad.
Dad meant husband.
Husband meant safe.
Boyfriend meant—
Not safe.
Safe
safe.
safe.
They weren't legal. No rules, no paper, the could leave. This was not safe. It needed to be fixed.
His throat started to hurt, like he was going to puke God this was bad. His parents weren't married, they were going to separate and leave them.
Remy was in the bathroom when he silently enter his parents room.
Peter slipped out quietly.
He went to Rogue’s side.
Climbed onto the dresser, Opened the drawer where she kept important things.
He found the photo. The one she have showed him a couple days ago, when she introduced the X-Men to him, not in person yet, but she did in pictures! His momma was his favorite X-Men, then his dad! The others he didn't like, never meet them either, but Rogue talked a bit of this one.
The picture showed a Rogue as a teenager, standing next to a man with wild hair and sideburns.
Logan.
Momma’s dad, she talked about him. He helped her when little. So he has his grandpa.
Grandpas fixed things, right?
He held the photo tightly.
Then climbed onto the wall, then the ceiling.
He was going to fix this himself.
He moved through the mansion silently, small hands sticking effortlessly to plaster.
Indignant thoughts bounced around his head.
They weren’t married.
That was wrong.
Remy was his dad.
Dad meant husband.
Why weren’t they fixing it? They were dumb if they believed he wasn't going to do anything about it
Maybe they didn’t know it was broken.
Maybe Logan could tell them.
Maybe Logan could make them marry.
Then they couldn’t separate.
They couldn’t leave him.
They couldn’t send him back.
His chest squeezed painfully. He didn't knew he needed to be fixed when hydra put him through the experiments, momma said it wasn't his fault and that he didn't need fixing, that he was already perfect.
But hydra did fix him, the upgraded him. And they're bad people.
What if this was bad?
Was he bad?
Something in him told him he wasn't, that he was doing something good.
But what if they got mad? Hydra always got mad when he asked them to stop,
What if Remy decided he didn’t want him anymore? Hydra didn't want him anymore. They left him behind, and then gambit and Rogue got him and he got stuck with him
His breathing hitched.
But the fear of them leaving was worse.
So he kept going, he was going to make sure that either Remy or Anna Marie left them behind like they did. He was going to stick with them like stick on walls
The scent didn’t belong.
Kid, Young.
Fear, Metal.
Pain.
Logan froze in the hallway. Wait, metal?
Then movement above him, He looked up.
A tiny figure clung to the ceiling.
Curly hair.
Huge eyes.
Bare feet.
Terrified. And in the ceiling, like gravity wasn't in terms with him.
Logan’s chest tightened.
“…hey,” he said carefully.
The kid stared at him, then at a photo he had in his hand then back at him again.
Then—
“…are you my grandpa?”
Logan’s brain stopped. Like for real actually stoped working.
“I’m... what?”
The kid dropped down from the ceiling, his foot on the ground again, the cold send him a shiver.
“…Momma said you were her dad. So you’re my grandpa.”
“…your mom is…?”
“that's my momma" he showed the photo of him and Rogue, she was still a teen back then "I call her pretty lady rogue"
Everything inside Logan went silent.
He looked closer.
And smelled, the kid did smell like rogue and...
Remy.
“…you got a name, kid?”
“…Peter.”
Too small.
Way too small.
“…what’re you doin’ out here alone?”
Peter held up the photo again
“You.”
Logan took it slowly.
Him and Rogue. Years ago.
“…why you lookin’ for me?”
Peter hesitated.
“…Momma isn’t married to my dad.”
Logan blinked. Actually blinked again.
“…what?”
“They said he’s her boyfriend,” Peter said miserably. Like it a personal attack towards him
Boyfriend.
boyfriend. fucking word
Logan frowned.
“That’s wrong,” Peter added.
“…why?”
“Because he’s my dad,” Peter said. “And dads are husbands. But she said boyfriend! I can't be the only one that see that need fixing!”
Something cracked in Logan’s chest.
“…you want me to fix it?”
Peter nodded instantly.
“You’re her dad. You can tell them.” he answered like it was the most reasonable thing ever.
Jesus Christ.
Logan crouched carefully.
“C’mere—” He reached out.
Touched Peter’s arm, he was about to lift him up, take him back to Remy and Rogue and ask for an explanation, but mostly because the kid was barefoot, the cold make him shiver
Metal exploded out of the child’s back.
Four mechanical limbs snapped open.
Peter screamed.
Logan froze.
Implants.
Connected to his spine.
On a. Five. year. Old.
Rage detonated inside Logan.
Peter scrambled back.
“I’m sorry! I’m sorry! I didn’t mean— don't tell momma!”
Logan dropped his voice immediately.
Soft.
Gentle.
“Hey. You ain’t in trouble.”
“They come out when I’m bad—”
“No,” Logan said firmly.
Peter’s breathing shook.
“but they hurt.”
Logan inhaled slowly.
Murder later.
Not now.
“…c’mon,” Logan said gently. “Let’s go talk to your dad.”
He accepted, started walking again
"You going to make them get married right?" He asked
"Kid."
"Peter. Call me Peter" he asked. He knew he was being an hypocrite, he let rogue calm him baby and sugar, Remy calm him petit, which by the way, he still consider it an insult
Anyways if was not a lot time of walking, so he got there pretty quickly, he was still mad. But Logan nocked in the door
Remy opened the door.
Froze.
Peter.
Metal limbs.
Logan behind him.
Remy moved instantly.
“Petit—”
“He got these when I touched him,” Logan said.
Remy crouched.
“Hey, Petit. It’s okay.”
Peter grabbed his shirt.
“…they hurt.”
Remy’s chest shattered.
“I know.”
He checked the implants carefully, murmuring reassurance until they retracted.
Peter clung to him.
“…Momma isn’t married to you,” Peter whispered.
Remy blinked.
“…what?”
“she said you’re her boyfriend. Boyfriend!” Peter said, voice wobbling. “That’s wrong.”
Remy’s brain stopped.
“You’re my dad,” Peter continued. “So you’re her husband. So you can't leave us.”
Remy swallowed hard.
“…hey,” he whispered. “Ah ain’t goin’ nowhere. You hear me?”
“…promise?”
“Yeah. Ah promise.”
Peter pressed closer.
“…you should marry her.”
Remy let out a shaky laugh.
“…yeah, bébé. I plan to.”
“…soon?”
“…soon.”
Peter hesitated.
Then quietly:
“…because married people don’t separate.”
Remy froze.
“…what?”
Peter’s fingers twisted in his shirt.
“…they can’t leave. They stay. I don't want you to leave.”
The words were small.
Fragile.
Truthful.
Understanding slammed into Remy like a truck, this wasn’t about weddings.
This was about abandonment. About him not wanting him to leave him
“…hey,” Remy whispered, pulling him closer. “Ah ain’t leavin’. Married or not. You stuck with me, petit.”
Peter’s arms tightened around his neck.
“…really?”
“Really.”
“…can I be there? When you guys get married”
Remy smiled through the ache in his chest.
“actually you're gonna be my best man.”
Peter gasped.
“…really??”
“Really.”
Peter hugged him hard.
"Thanks, dad. I got make fun of your accent anymore" he muttered
Behind them, Logan watched silently.
Family.
Yeah.
That was family.
Nobody corrected him. Not even after he left
Later, not a lot after that, Peter fell asleep against his chest eventually.
Remy sat on the bed, holding him.
Heart full, eyes burning.
He said dad. dad.
He wanted permanence, He was scared of losing them.
Remy pressed a kiss into his curls.
“…you ain’t losin’ me,” he whispered.
And for the first time since they found him Peter had trusted him enough to say why he was afraid.
That didn't happen before, at least not with him, he did open up a little more with rogue.
He was definitely making him be his best man in his future wedding, he was already two steps ahead of Rogue in that one.
