Work Text:
Peter heard his mom was back from the mission, great.
well it would be great if he didn't also heard that she was hurt during the mission. it was probably Hydra's considering that no one told him nothing about it.
He knew his mom and her team were dusting all these bastards. he did heard that.
her momma got a scratch on her face, it was not that bad and it probably would heal in a couple days.
but still.
he was mad, it was all Scott's fault, he heard grampa Logan said so.
Logan was always right, he was strong, old and have metal crawls!
it remind him a little bit of his metal limbs, not the same, but still made him like them a little bit more.
Scott, right! he was mad with him. it was his fault his mother got a scratch and he was about making it everyone's (Actually only Scott's) problem.
Scott hated being stuck in bed.
Not because of the pain. He could deal with pain. even when it did hurt quite a lot.
But because lying still meant watching everyone else keep working while he couldn't. It meant feeling useless.
he hated feeling that way, Jean was dealing with the other two kids they rescued. they seem like good people, he really hopped him and jean could help them the same way Gambit and Rogue were helping their spider-kid, Peter
The medical wing of the mansion was quiet that afternoon. Too quiet.
Scott shifted slightly against the pillows, careful of the bandages wrapped around his ribs. The movement still sent a sharp stab of pain through his side.
Great.
Just Great
He stared at the ceiling, listening to the faint sounds of the mansion in the distance.
Footsteps.
Voices.
Somewhere far away someone laughing.
Life going on. that's good.
The door to the room creaked open.
Scott turned his head slightly.
A very small figure stood in the doorway.
Barefoot.
Curly hair.
Huge brown eyes staring at him like he had personally committed a crime toward him.
Peter.
rogue and gambit's kid
Scott blinked behind his visor. what was the kid doing here?
“Well,” he said carefully, voice rough but calm “hey there.”
Peter didn’t move.
He just stared.
Scott waited.
Eventually, after a couple minutes staring at him with pure heatred in his eyes, the kid walked inside, small steps quiet against the floor. His hands were clenched tightly at his sides.
“You let my mom get hurt,” Peter said.
No hesitation.
No greeting.
Just accusation.
Scott didn’t flinch.
That was fair. he did let Rogue got hurt, it was only a scratch yes, but still
“Yeah,” he said quietly. “She got hurt on the mission.”
Peter’s eyes narrowed.
“Logan said you’re the leader.”
“I am.”
“You’re supposed to keep people safe. you failed.”
Scott watched the kid for a moment. he wasn't going to lie, that did hurt him a little
“…I try,” he said simply. his breathing failing him a little bit when he moved
Peter opened his mouth to say something else—
Then he really looked at Scott.
The bandages.
The bruising along his jaw.
The way Scott was holding one arm stiffly like moving it hurt too much.
he heard the broken ribs in his body, it made his hearth ache. Peter knew how bad those one hurts
Peter’s anger evaporated so fast it almost looked painful.
“Oh.”
Scott raised an eyebrow slightly.
Peter shifted awkwardly on his feet. not knowing what to do
he was here to express his anger, not to feel bad for the guy.
“…you look worse than her.”
Scott huffed a quiet laugh.
“Yeah. I get that sometimes.”
Silence stretched between them.
Peter looked deeply uncomfortable.
Scott looked in pain.
Then, very abruptly, he climbed onto the chair beside Scott’s bed.
Scott blinked again.
Peter sat there for a moment, staring at him, this time with compassion.
“…do your eyes hurt?” he asked suddenly.
Scott tilted his head.
“Sometimes.”
Peter leaned forward slightly.
“Can you see through walls?”
“No.”
“Have you ever destroyed a building?”
Scott paused.
“…once.”
Peter’s eyes widened.
“That’s so cool.” peter said. His eyes sparking
Scott almost smiled.
Peter kept talking after that.
Questions. Lots of them.
'What's your on field name? my mom's is Rogue!'
i know, mine is Cyclops
'do you like being called cyclops?'
i guess?
'Do you have a wife?'
...i have a girlfriend
'that's bad you should marry her.'
...
'can you see with those in your eyes?'
yes
'did you rescued s-someone like me?'
yes, two kids, almost your age.
'Cool. have you kill someone?'
...yes
'did you enjoy it? Hydra said i should'
no? you shouldn't enjoy killing people, is not good.
'but you killed?'
last resource kid, not proud, but sometimes it's the least bad option you can pick.
'deep.'
i know.
'you like spiders?'
i enjoy you and your company, other spiders? i thin i'll pass.
'good, i dont like other spiders either, their scary'
its okay to have fears.
'you read comics?'
sometimes. I guess
'Cool, who's your favorite x-men?'
i can't have a favorite
and then the kid continue with his questions, a lot of them actually
About the visor.
About the laser beams.
About missions.
About whether Scott had ever accidentally blasted a tree in half.
Scott answered all of them patiently.
Mostly because he realized something quickly.
The kid wasn’t interrogating him.
He was distracting him.
Trying, in the only way he knew how, to make things feel normal.
After a while the door opened again.
“Ah knew Ah’d find you here.”
Remy leaned against the doorway, arms crossed.
Gambit looked amused… until he noticed Peter sitting beside Scott’s bed.
“Petit,” he said gently. “You supposed to be nappin’.”
Peter looked at him, then back at Scott.
He slid off the chair.
Remy stepped forward and scooped him up easily.
Peter didn’t protest. ultil he did
"Wait! let me down, let me down!"
so he did, Peter run to Scott bed again and gibe him a little careful hug
“You’re my favorite x-men after Momma.” he said before rushing towards Remy again, Remy got him up lifting him up while also hugging him in his chest, peter's head on his shoulder
As Remy turned toward the door, Peter leaned back slightly.
looking at Scott
Scott looked back.
Peter leaned close and whispered very seriously but enough for both of the men to hear
“You’re so cool. the coolest!”
Scott blinked.
Across the room Remy froze mid-step.
“…Ah heard that,” he said slowly.
Peter looked entirely unbothered.
Scott finally let out a quiet laugh, wincing slightly as it pulled at his ribs.
Remy shook his head, already walking out.
“Ungrateful child,” he muttered.
Peter waved at Scott as they left.
“Don’t you die,” he added as a matter of fact.
The door closed behind them.
Scott stared at it for a moment.
Then leaned back into the pillows, still smiling faintly.
“…favorite after Mom,” he murmured.
Yeah.
He’d take that as a win. definitely going to rub it in both, Gambit and wolverine's, faces
