"I can't believe you actually saved a human," Jason said. "You could've died."
"That wasn't her fault," Dick said.
Jason gesticulated expressively. "Yeah, but you still put yourself in danger for a human! A hunter's kid, no less!"
"I didn't know she was from a hunter family," Dick said. He liked to think it wouldn't have made a difference.
Jason knew him well. "You would've rescued her anyway, wouldn't you?"
"She's a little kid," said Dick. "She loves her brothers. She wanted to know all about our transforming 'magic'. She likes decorating biscuits. She's a little kid," he repeated.
"She's a little kid now," said Jason. "What if she grows up and becomes a hunter just like the rest of her family?"
Dick watched the ripples in the water for a while. "What if she grows up," he said softly, "and remembers that a mer saved her once, and doesn't?"
