William Cross and Jack’s coup of Silas ends with Silas dead- Jack thought they were just deposing Silas, not assassinating him and is blindsided by Silas’ death. In the chaos Jack moves quickly to help David get on the throne to preserve peace in the country. David marries Michelle (who is secretly already pregnant) and is installed as king. David is out of his depth with the political maneuvering, so Jack secretly becomes his main advisor. Jack takes secret passageways to David’s room every night for clandestine planning sessions. They soon realize that forces are gathering who want to install Jack as a puppet king, so they hatch a plot for Jack to play along and catch the conspirators in the act. David is the only one who knows Jack is still loyal, everyone else thinks he and David has a falling out and Jack is bitterly willing to do anything for the throne.
Fic opens with Jack being tortured/interrogated by Gilboan forces and then “rescued” by the conspirators, then jumps back to David’s crowning and them hatching the plan. The timeline jumps back and forth a bit until the big reveal of Jack’s true loyalties. David publicly lauds Jack as a hero, much to Jack’s chagrin.
There’s tension between Jack and David the whole time, but it only culminates at the end. Michelle and David don’t talk about it on screen, but Michelle makes it clear she’s ok sharing David with Jack. The two keep it private for now, but David indicates that he doesn’t plan on keeping Jack a dirty secret. Michelle crusaded to get same sex marriage legalized while Jack was away, so the tides of public opinion on that are changing. -
