Chapter Text
The Harbinger and Crew
The Harbinger is a modified brigantine operating across contested and supernatural waters. It is neither
a pirate nor a naval vessel, but a neutral operator trusted to survive routes others refuse for transfers, deliveries, and other requests. Its continued existence relies on discretion, competence, and the crew's cohesion.
The crew of the Harbinger ship consists mainly of 8 people: Jex Calder, Damon Thalos, Silas Calder, Jack Bridger, Erol Pike, Mira Fenwick, Oren Stone, and Knox Marrow. It is
Character Info:
Jex Calder,
Overview
Jex is the human captain of the Harbinger, a man whose authority never needs to be raised to be felt.
He leads through consistency, empathy, and unshakable resolve.
Physical Description
Jex is a human man in his late thirties to early forties, standing at 6'2" with a broad-shouldered, solid
build formed by years at sea. He carries himself with steady confidence rather than rigid discipline. His
shaggy brown hair often falls into his face and is almost always decorated with small, uneven braids done
by others. His hazel eyes are observant and calm, supporting the subtle authority that makes people
listen when he speaks.
Background & Relationships
Jex discovered Damon chained in a cellar and refused to leave him behind. Their bond developed slowly,
rooted through patience and mutual respect, becoming a quiet but profound love. Jex offers Damon assurance
without control, rooting him in the present.
Body Language
Jex squares his shoulders when commanding, softens when listening, and rubs his knuckles when
stressed. His presence itself is often enough to de-escalate conflict.
Damon Thalos
Overview
Damon is known across ports and hushed legends as the Devil of the Sea — an ancient vampire
whose presence bears the weight of storms. Cold, terrifying, and seemingly unfeeling, he is in truth,
deeply emotional, his feelings expressed not using words but through posture, movement, and
instinct.
Physical Description
Damon is a towering vampire, standing at 6'8" with a lean, athletic physique defined by extremely low
body fat from centuries of malnutrition. His muscle is dense and functional rather than bulky. His white
hair is cut shorter on top and left longer at the back, growing unevenly around old scars yet remaining
unexpectedly soft despite constant salt air. His amber eyes are partially clouded, lending him an eternally distant, predatory gaze. Massive bat-like wings—torn, scarred, and punctured with holes—extend from his back, often brushing walls and doorframes. A long reptilian tail trails behind him,
capable of snapping as a whip, ending in a fluffy white tuft that resembles his hair.
Background
Born in a coastal cult town devoted to a god of sea and storms, Damon was raised as a living sacrifice
— a vessel meant to house divinity. On the eve of the ritual, the town paid a vampire to turn him,
believing corruption would strip him of purity. His sister, Liora, freed him from the church, and together
they fled into the night. Though the god was denied its vessel, the connection was never fully severed,
electricity still sparkling through Damon's body when his emotions surge, mostly from his tail but sometimes travels up his spine and across his wings. The cult spread legends of the
vampire who destroyed them: the Devil of the Sea. Centuries later, the Crowe family captured Damon,
chaining him in a silver-lined cellar and using him as their executioner for 150 years — until Jex found
him half-blind and feral.
Trauma & Responses
Damon is triggered by confinement, restraints, sharp commands, and hunger. Under stress, he
becomes silent, predatory, or dissociative. He regains calm through choice, space, routine, and Jex's
steady presence.
Body Language Tells
Tail flicks signal irritation; wings twitch when emotionally stirred. Electricity crackles along his scales
when overwhelmed. He positions himself between threats and those he considers his own. Around Jex,
his posture softens, wings loosening, tail coiling loosely.
Silas Calder
Overview
Silas is a young vampire whose brightness masks deep insecurity and fear of abandonment.
Physical Description
Silas is a younger-looking vampire standing at 5'9" with a slim build and soft muscle tone, still filling out
physically. His brown hair is worn long and usually braided, with small trinkets interlaced with it by Jack.
His wings are feathered rather than membranous, dark grey with flashes of blue visible in the light. His
long tail ends in matching feathers, some of which are braided into his hair. His bright amber eyes are
expressive and often betray his emotions.
Background
Turned by a cruel sire who ruled through punishment, Silas endured years of abuse before being
abandoned. Alone, he became feral until Damon and the Harbinger found him. Damon became the first
person to choose him.
Behavior & Tells
Silas overcompensates with happiness, seeks proximity to those he trusts, and mirrors Damon
unconsciously. His tail swishes and feathers fluff when happy.
Erol Pike
Sarcastic and sharp, Erol hides care behind blades and humor
Erol stands at 6'0" with a lean, rangy build suited for agility rather than raw power. His black hair juts out
in uneven spikes, giving him a constantly disheveled look. A sharp grin often accompanies him,
imitating the knives he is rarely without and the unceasing energy in his movements
Mira Fenwick
Sharp-tongued and perceptive, Mira serves as the emotional mediator of the crew, grounding even
Damon.
Mira stands at 5'11" with a tall, wiry build defined by long hours of work in place of brute strength. Her
long ginger hair falls in loose orange waves down her back, often pinned up with a quill while she works.
Her alert green eyes miss very little, and ink-smeared fingers are a constant marker of her role as the
ship's scribe.
Jack Bridger
Nervous but brave, Jack finds confidence beside Silas. He fidgets when anxious and straightens when resolved.
Jack is a young human sailor standing at 5'10" with a lean, slightly underdeveloped build. His black hair
is constantly messy, sticking up at odd angles, no matter how much effort is put into taming it. He
moves with uneasy energy, fidgeting when nervous, though there is a quiet steadiness in his bearing
when he is truly determined.
Oren Stone
A silent wall of muscle and kindness, Oren moves instinctively to protect.
Oren is an imposing man standing at 6'6" with a massive, heavily muscled build that makes him appear
more wall than person. His shoulder-length blonde hair sticks up stubbornly along his neck no matter
how often he tries to flatten it. He moves with deliberate economy, instinctively placing himself between
danger and the rest of the crew.
Knox Marrow
Quick-tempered and agile, Knox masks insecurity with anger and motion.
Knox stands at 6'1" with an athletic, flexible build well-suited for climbing rigging with ease. They have
long blonde hair usually tied back in a low ponytail, though they sometimes allow Silas and Jack to braid it
it. Their green eyes are sharp and often flash with irritation, and their posture tends toward tension,
betraying the insecurity they work hard to conceal.
Vampires
Baseline Vampire Physiology
Vampires display heightened senses, strength, and durability compared to humans. Sensory input is
richer and more overwhelming, particularly sound, smell, and affective signals.
They require blood for sustained health. Prolonged deprivation leads to lethargy, irritability, impaired
cognition, and an increase in feral instincts.
Healing is rapid but not limitless; repeated trauma leaves scar memory even when wounds close.
Instinctual & Behavioral Patterns
Vampires display strong territorial instincts, particularly toward those they consider 'theirs.' This
presents as vigilance, positioning, and constant threat assessment.
Predatory stillness is common under stress — minimal movement, intense focus, controlled breathing.
Fight-or-flight responses favor freezing or fighting over escape.
Vocalisations & Non-Verbal Communication
Vampires frequently communicate through involuntary or semi-voluntary vocalisations, especially when
Verbal language feels inadequate.
Chirping: Soft, brief sounds associated with conveying curiosity, reassurance, greeting, or affection. Common
between bonded individuals and toward fledglings.
Clicking: Sharp, rhythmic sounds used for spatial recognition or echolocation. Damon uses clicking
while vision deteriorates, during exhaustion, emotional overload, or seasonal flare-ups. Clicking may
also indicate alert focus.
Growling: Low, chest-deep warning indicating territorial threat, fear, or anger. Often reflexive.
Hissing: Defensive reaction to sudden stress, intrusion, or restraint. Usually involuntary.
Purring: Deep vibrational sound associated with safety, affection, or contentment. Typically only
expressed around trusted individuals and during rest.
Emotional Processing & Bonding
Emotions are felt intensely but often expressed through posture, sound, and closeness rather than
words.
Vampires may struggle to identify or verbalize emotions tied to vulnerability.
Bonding forms deep, long-lasting attachments. Once trust is established, it is extremely durable.
Wings and tails
All vampires grow wings and a tail after being turned; the process is very painful. Their back, where the wings meet skin, is often scarred from where the bone and new muscle broke through. The wings and tail easily snitch on what the vampire is feeling, no matter how hard they try to hide it. The wings perk up and tail sways when happy/comfortable, the wings and tail droop and curl inwards when sad/shameful, and the wings and tail flare and lash when angry or in pain. Other behaviours vary from vampire to vampire.
