A Monstrous Mystery

Summary:

When Horton catches a cold on Morton Junior's first day of school, Trinity offers to be a substitute teacher, but things get out of hand when she thinks there's a monster in the jungle.

Work Text:

*Our story begins on a seemingly peaceful day in the Jungle of Nool, we see Trinity sleeping peacefully in her tree, covered up by her quilt, we then hear someone narrating*

Narrator: We now return to the Jungle of Nool; it may seem calm now, but don’t be a fool. Trinity was in for a big surprise; one that would appear before her very eyes.

*We then see Morton Junior fly up towards her, he takes a deep breath and trumpets, Trinity's eyes snap open and she jolts up in fright, yowling as she does so, she tightly grips onto the branch as her fur stands on end*

Trinity: What?! What?! Why?! Who?!

*She looks up and sees Morton Junior, who giggles softly*

Trinity: …Oh, it’s just you, Junior. Good morning.

Morton Junior: Today is the day, Mama! Y’know what it is?!

*Trinity remembers and her expression brightens up*

Trinity: That’s right, it’s your first day of school! I'm sure your father is just as excited for it as I am!

*Morton Junior’s smile fades*

Morton Junior: Yeah, about that, he’s not doing so good.

*Trinity tilts her head in confusion*

Trinity: What do you mean?

Morton Junior: How ‘bout I show you?

Trinity: Alright, gimme a sec to get down.

Morton Junior: I know a faster way to get there.

Trinity: What do you me-

*He picks her up by the shoulders and starts to fly off with her*

Trinity: Whoa! For a little guy, you sure are strong!

Morton Junior: Thanks, I get it from Papa.

*He carries her to an area with lots of trees, Horton is lying in the grass, his trunk is all red, his eyes are somewhat bloodshot, and what little hair he has on his head is quite scraggly, Morton Junior sets Trinity down and she approaches her boyfriend in worry*

Trinity: Oh, Faith! Are you alright?

Horton: O-Ob courze, Glober. *He says in a nasally voice*

*Trinity puts her hands on her hips and raises an eyebrow at this*

Trinity: Oh really? Then why do you look and sound like that?

Horton: It’s really nudding, just gib be a midute and I’ll be good and ready to teach by students.

*Trinity crosses her arms and gives him a stern look*

Trinity: Oh no! Not like that you aren't.

Horton: But they need be, and Junior’s first day is really imbortant.

Trinity: Horton, you're clearly sick, you're in no shape to be teaching right now. I don't want you to potentially make yourself worse by overworking yourself.

Morton Junior: Mama’s got a point, and what if the other kids get sick too?

*Horton thinks about this and sighs*

Horton: Dat’s true, the last thig I want is to spread dis aroud, but who’s gudda teach the class instead?

Trinity: I’ll do it for you. You get all the rest you need, and I promise you that Junior’s first day will be great.

Morton Junior: Yay!

*Horton smiles at her*

Horton: Thanks, Glober. I guess I could use some relaxation.

Trinity: I’ll see you later, Faith. Get well soon. I love you.

*She then sashays away with Morton Junior flying behind her, he waves goodbye to his father with his trunk and the latter does the same, Trinity then comes to the part of the jungle where the classes take place, the students have already come in*

Trinity: Hey, kids, it’s me, Trinity.

*The kids look at her in confusion*

Angela: Uh, where’s Horton?

Katie: In the sky?

*Trinity snickers at this*

Trinity: Oh, no, he’s just out with a cold. I’ll be taking his place today. Now, meet your new classmate, our son Morton Junior.

*Morton Junior trumpets with glee and does a flip*

Morton Junior: Hey there! So nice to see you!

*Jessica flaps her wings with joy*

Jessica: Yay, someone else who can fly, just like me!

Tommy: An elephant with wings? That’s kinda strange.

Angela: Well, you are a cow-bear hybrid, so that’s hardly the oddest thing.

Tommy: Yeah, that’s true.

*He gives Katie a look as she stands on her head*

Tommy: I know someone who’s even weirder.

*Katie then gets a serious look on her face*

Katie: So do I…it’s none other than the scariest monster in Nool.

*The others look at her in surprise at this sudden change in mood, Morton Junior looks intrigued*

Morton Junior: M-Monster?

Katie: It’s bigger than the tallest tree in Nool. It’s so loud you can hear it from miles away. It’s got three legs and it’ll eat anything in sight.

Trinity: Where did you hear this, Katie?

Katie: My big brother told me.

*Trinity then chuckles*

Trinity: He was probably just making up stories. You know how siblings are.

Jessica: But, Trinity, there are other worlds on specks, who’s to say it can’t be real?

*Trinity’s smile fades*

Trinity: …Good point.

Morton Junior: Worlds on specks? What do you mean?

Trinity: Well, your father found a whole city in a speck, but that’s another story. And besides, even if there was a monster here, there’s no way it could ever come after us.

*She clears her throat*

Trinity: Anyway, let's get on with our lesson.

*Meanwhile, Horton is lying in some flowers with his eyes closed, when he hears the gossipy birds conversing*

Bird 1: Did you hear the news, girls?

Bird 2: You mean about the weather?

*Horton opens an eye*

Horton: Huh? What do you bean?

Bird 1: I heard there’s going to be a great big storm, there’ll be lots of lightning and rain!

*Horton’s eyes widen in horror*

Horton: What?!

Bird 2: Not to mention the thunder!

Bird 1: Might be our worst storm yet!

*Horton rises to his feet*

Horton: I godda warn Triddity and Judior!

Bird 3: Are you sure you wanna go out when you’re this stuffed up?

Horton: I don’t care if I’b sig, all I care aboud is my fabily’s safety!

*And with that, he quickly runs off as fast as he can, leaving the bird ladies astonished*

Bird 1: I gotta give him this, he really does care about his family.

Bird 2: How very noble.

*Back with Trinity and the kids, she’s taking them to the lake*

Trinity: Alrighty kids, this lake is just filled with fish of many kinds, it's just chock-full of life and aquatic wonders…despite how terrifying it is.. *She whispers to herself*

*She clears her throat and winks at Morton Junior*

Trinity: You know, Junior, this lake is actually really special to me.

Morton Junior: Why, Mama?

Trinity: Because, this is the place I met your father.

Morton Junior: Wow! Really?

Jessica: Wait, this is where you met Horton?

Trinity: Mhm.. That day was one of the best days of my life.. He saved my life when I nearly drowned trying to get a shiny treasure in the water.. I never got that treasure, but I got something much better.. I found love.

*Morton Junior giggles, Trinity clears her throat*

Trinity: Anyway, back to the fish in the lake, there is one fish, two fish, red fish, blue fish.

*Then a loud clap of thunder is heard, Morton Junior yelps in fear at the loud sound and presses his ears down, then it starts to rain, much to Trinity’s horror*

Trinity: Gah!! Rain!! I’m soaked!!

Katie: Yay! Splashy time!

*She starts stomping in the puddles, Angela rolls around in one, Tommy ends up looking like a wet rat and Jessica stifles a snicker*

Tommy: Very funny, Jess.

*Another thunderclap is heard, Morton Junior hides behind his mother and trembles*

Trinity: I-It’s okay, Junior, it’s just a loud noise, it’s not gonna hurt you.

*Just then, they all hear the sounds of stampeding from afar, followed by a loud sneeze that is powerful enough to knock a tree to the ground*

Trinity: What the-?! What was that?!

*She turns towards the kids*

Trinity: Please tell me that was one of you guys.

*The kids nervously shake their heads, Trinity’s ears droop and her eyes widen in shock*

Trinity: It can't be..It just can't be..!

*Suddenly, they hear a loud, raspy sound from afar, Trinity and the kids scream in fright*

Trinity: The monster…it is real!

Jessica: Holy bear-cow! I never knew Katie would be right about anything!

Katie: Told you so.

*She paces back and forth frantically*

Trinity: What do we do?! What do we do?! What do we-

*She then slips and falls into a mud puddle, she ends up being covered in it*

Morton Junior: A-Are you alright?

*Trinity props herself up and wipes the mud off of her face*

Trinity: Bleh! Great.. Now I'm gonna need a bath, I hate taking baths..!

*Trinity then gets an idea*

Trinity: Okay, kids, just follow me.

*She quickly leads the kids away, the sky gets darker and the rain starts to get worse and worse as they run deeper into the jungle, another loud clap of thunder is heard, Morton Junior clings to his mother*

Morton Junior: I’m scared!

Trinity: You’ll be alright, we’re almost there!

*She leads them all to a cave*

Trinity: Okay, just wait here, the monster will never find you in this cave.

*She starts to turn around and leave, but Morton Junior holds onto her tail with his trunk*

Morton Junior: But Mama, what about you?

Trinity: Don’t worry, Junior. I’ve got some tricks up my sleeve. I promise you, I'll come back safe and sound.

*She kisses him on the forehead and looks at the other kids*

Trinity: Now, no matter what happens, don't come out until I say so, ok?

Morton Junior: O-Okay, Mama.

Jessica: Got it.

*The others nod, and Katie just curls up and takes a nap*

Trinity: And Junior…I love you.

*And with that, Trinity runs off into the darkness, Morton Junior watches on in worry, the other kids look at him in concern, Tommy pats him on the back*

Morton Junior: I..I love you too, Mama.

*We see Trinity walking off deeper into the jungle, she gets a look of determination as she hears the same raspy sound from before in the distance*

Trinity: Ok, you vile beast..! You're gonna get it! *She shouts in anger*

*She storms forward, meanwhile with Horton, he’s pushing his way through the rain, he’s shivering and coughing*

Horton: Hold on, Glober! Hold on, Junior! I’b coming!

*He trumpets through his nose, resulting in the same raspy sound, he then steps on a bunch of pebbles that have been left on the path*

Horton: Ow!! Ooh!!

*He starts hopping around in pain, he then stumbles into a bunch of vines that have been left in front of him*

Horton: Oof! Darn it!

*Because of his strength, he manages to tear right through them, but they cover his body and make him unrecognizable, he then stumbles over a long vine that is tied between the trees ahead like a tripwire, and he falls onto the cold, unforgiving ground, a loud thud echoes through the jungle as he hits the ground below*

Horton: Ow…

*Another loud clap of thunder is heard and he clutches his head as the sound hurts his ears*

Horton: Oh, by head…

*However, as the area lights up from the lightning, his eyes widen as he sees a darkened silhouette in the distance, its green glowing eyes shine bright even once the light vanishes, the silhouette then runs off into the darkness*

Horton: Huh…? Is dat…? *He whispers to himself*

*He tries to follow the silhouette, but it’s nowhere to be found, he looks around in confusion and scratches his head with his trunk, only for mud to land on his head from above, he exclaims in surprise and looks up to find Trinity with a coconut full of mud, meaning that she dumped it on him*

*His expression brightens up when he sees her, but before he can say a word, she hisses and pounces on him with unsheathed claws*

Trinity: STAY AWAY FROM MY SON!! AND MY STUDENTS!!

*She begins to claw and bite him, he yelps in pain*

*Trinity yowls in rage and continues to claw and bite him, Horton then wraps his trunk around her and holds her away from him, she thrashes around violently as he does this*

Horton: Glober, what’re you doig?!

*Trinity suddenly stops when she recognizes his voice*

Trinity: F…Faith…?

Horton: Glober, it’s be, Horton!

*Trinity realizes what she’s done and hangs her head in shame*

Trinity: Oh, Faith, I’m so sorry! I didn’t know it was you! I-

*Horton sets her down*

Horton: Slow down, Glober. What habbened?

Trinity: Well, you see, I-I heard you from afar and since Katie told me there was a monster in the jungle, I mistook you for just that, so I set up all these traps! And now, I just attacked my own boyfriend!

*She looks down in sadness, Horton puts his trunk on her*

Horton: Id’s okay, Glober. I’ve god thick skin. And I’b just glad you’re safe.

Trinity: What’re you doing out here, anyway? You know you’re supposed to rest up.

Horton: I just wanted to cheg on you and Junior since a storb just came in. Where is he?

Trinity: I kept him and the others in a cave just in case the monster came for them. Now I know that nobody was in any real danger.

*She chuckles nervously*

Trinity: It's all kinda silly, huh?

Horton: Well, you nebber know. There could be one in dis world somewhere.

*He then inhales deeply, about to sneeze, Trinity puts a finger under his trunk, which actually keeps him from sneezing*

Trinity: You should go home and get some sleep. You need it to get better. And besides, I’ve still got a class to teach.

Horton: Good ide- ATCHOO!!

*The force of his sneeze sends her flying into a pile of leaves, causing them to stick to her*

Trinity: Dang it, now I’ll have to take an even longer bath than before!

Horton: Sorry, Glober.

*Trinity gets up and sighs*

Trinity: It’s fine. I wish you a speedy recovery.

*Horton gives her a grateful look and lumbers away, Trinity goes back to find the kids; back in the cave, they’re waiting nervously*

Morton Junior: Where could she be?! Did the monster get her?!

Jessica: I don’t think so, she can handle herself out there.

Tommy: She’s kinda like Horton that way. No wonder they’re in love.

*A flash of lightning illuminates the outside of the cave, Trinity is now standing there and she’s still covered in mud and leaves, everyone screams in horror*

Katie: It’s another monster!!

Angela: Run!!

Trinity: No, no, no, wait-

*The kids run out of the cave, while Morton Junior soars away*

Trinity: Don’t go! Come back!

*She sighs in exasperation*

Trinity: Now I know how Horton feels. I probably deserve this.

*We then see the Cat in the Hat perched on a tree*

Cat: Trinity has had a rough day, meanwhile, Horton can sleep his troubles away.

Trinity: Rub it in, why don’t you?!
