"Alright," Xander's voice spoke off-camera, looking at Mario. "You just have to answer one very simple question, got it?"
"Okie dokie!" Mario raised his thumbs up, smiling.
"Good. The question is simple, though it might make you think for a moment," Xander said. "Why are you here, in Smash Bros.? What makes you deserve to be in this tournament?"
Mario fell silent for a moment, thinking about the question.
"Well..." he began, moving his hands in small gestures. "I'm here because I've fought and saved many people. I've faced giant monsters, rescued princesses, I've crossed entire worlds just to save the day! And I'm not the only one. Everyone here has proven something, right? Each one has their own story. We all have a purpose to be here. Maybe mine is to keep proving that, no matter how tough it gets, I can always get back up and keep going."
"Hmm..." Donkey Kong crossed his arms, looking ahead with a thoughtful expression, as if the question was something completely new to him. "Why am I here, huh? Well, if you ask me..." he laughed softly, scratching his head, "I'm not one to stop and think too much about these things, but... I guess I've been protecting my home, my jungle, and my people since I was a baby. I've fought all kinds of threats, from the Kremlings to mysterious villains trying to steal my bananas."
He paused, looking at his own hand, as if realizing what he had just said.
"But I'm also here because I like being in these kinds of battles, you know? I like the adrenaline, I like testing my strength, and I also like making new friends. Sometimes we fight, other times, we understand each other. And I like being part of something bigger. Here, in Smash, I don't just fight for myself, but for the ones I care about. And that, maybe, is enough to be here."
"I..." Link scratched the back of his neck, a bit puzzled by the question. He wasn't used to speaking about himself out loud. "I'm here because, even though I never sought to be a hero, circumstances always push me to be one. I've fought to protect the kingdom of Hyrule, to prevent evil from taking control, and to make sure those who depend on me are safe. I'm not the strongest or the wisest, but when the people I love are in danger, I have to do whatever it takes to save them. I guess my reason for being here is simply... to do what's right, like I've always tried to do."
"I'm here because..." Samus ran a hand through her hair, looking at the others with a serious expression. "I never sought the company of others, but the fight never stops, and there's always something bigger to face. I've traveled through space, fought creatures from other worlds, and confronted my own past. Every mission, every battle, has led me to this point. I'm here to continue protecting the galaxy, to stop evil from advancing, even if that means putting myself at risk. Maybe the reason I'm here is because, at the end of the day, I'm a warrior, and my mission never ends."
"My existence is a contradiction," Dark Samus spoke in a low, ominous, and resonant voice. "I was born from darkness, born to destroy. But... at some point, the question is not just why I'm here, but what will I do with what I am. My purpose is not as clear as my counterpart, Samus. I'm here because something drives me, something I cannot fully understand. Perhaps I'm not a hero, but what interests me most is how my presence here can change my destiny."
"Yoshi, Yoshi!" the green dinosaur replied, jumping with enthusiasm.
Xander, with an amused smile, explained:
"Yoshi is here because he's always fought for his friends and his home. Although he prefers not to get into big conflicts, when his loved ones are in danger, he faces any challenge ahead of him."
"Poyo!" Kirby jumped joyfully, flowing from side to side like a ball of energy.
Xander calmly translated:
"Kirby says he's here to help everyone and, above all, to have fun. He's always ready to fight for what's right, and his reason for being here is simple: he always wants to be helpful and make others smile."
"I'm here because I've always had a mission..." Fox crossed his arms and looked ahead with determination. "To protect the universe and keep everyone who depends on us safe. My squad and I have fought all kinds of enemies. And even though I always have my differences with others, I know this battle is bigger than any personal issue. I'm here because duty always calls me, and I know I'm part of something much bigger."
"Pikachu!" the Pokémon shouted, its tail moving energetically while its cheeks sparked.
Xander translated with a smile:
"Pikachu says he's here because he wants to help his friends, he's always ready to fight to protect others and be the best companion anyone could have."
"I... well, I think I'm here because..." Luigi began, scratching his head. "I've lived in the shadow of my brother all my life, but I've had my own battles, my own challenges. I'm here to prove to myself that I can do it, that I can be a hero in my own right. And although sometimes I don't have much confidence in myself, I believe every fight in this tournament brings me one step closer to understanding what it really means to be brave."
"I'm here because, even though I'm still young, I've already faced challenges most people can't even imagine," Ness said. "I've saved my city, faced dark forces with the help of my friends, and, above all, I've learned that no matter how small you are, you can make a big difference. I'm here because I want to keep growing and learning from the greatest."
"Why am I here?" Captain Falcon laughed loudly, his voice filled with enthusiasm. "Because I'm the best! I've faced the greatest things the universe has to offer, and in Smash, I can prove once again why I'm the fastest and the strongest. It's not just about competing, it's about being the best. And I always, always strive to be that."
"Jigglypuff, jiggly!" Jigglypuff sang with a soft melody, moving from side to side coquettishly.
Xander, with an entertained smile, translated:
"Jigglypuff is here because, despite her mischievous nature, she has a strong desire to make everyone fall asleep. She likes being heard, even if her song doesn't always get the reception she expects. But beyond that, she's here because she enjoys being part of something big, and although her motivation might be a bit peculiar, her heart is in the right place."
Peach smiled softly, crossing her hands over her lap.
"I'm here because I've always fought for the well-being of those around me. My kingdom, my friends... everyone depends on me in some way. Although I'm a princess, I don't like staying behind when there are problems. I've proven that, even though my appearance is delicate, I can be strong when necessary. I'm here to protect my people and do what's right, just as any leader should."
Daisy let out a laugh while patting her own thigh.
"Well, if you ask me, I'm here because I love being in the center of the action! I'm not the type to sit around waiting for others to do the work. I'm always ready to jump into the field and give my best. I'm the princess of Sarasaland and I'm not afraid to fight for what I want! Plus, I love competition, so this tournament is the perfect place for me."
Bowser growled, looking at everyone with a mix of disdain and pride.
"Why am I here? That's easy! I'm the king of the Koopas, the leader of my troops. I've conquered castles, kidnapped princesses, and faced Mario over and over again. I'm here because, in the end, Smash is the only place where I can prove that I'm the strongest, the most feared, the most imposing. No one can stop me, and this time, I'm going to crush everyone!"
Popo nodded as he grabbed a shovel and lifted it, ready to do his part.
Nana smiled and pointed to her brother, almost as if she agreed with him.
"We're here because we aren't afraid. We've climbed frozen mountains, fought all kinds of monsters, and worked together as a team. Sometimes, it doesn't matter what we face, the important thing is that we're united. We, the Ice Climbers, are here because we know that, together, we're invincible."
Sheik stayed silent for a moment, her eyes fixed on the ground as she thought.
"I'm not here for glory or fame. My reason for fighting is to protect those who can't defend themselves. I've always been in the shadows, working from the shadows to ensure evil doesn't prevail. My task is bigger than any tournament, but fighting in Smash is another way to move forward, to never give up."
Zelda crossed her arms, her expression serious but determined.
"I'm here because, like Sheik, my duty is to protect Hyrule and those who depend on me. Although my destiny has always been marked by magic and power, I know that true strength lies not in physical power, but in the heart and mind. I'm here to continue fighting for my kingdom and to prove that I'm more than a princess; I'm a leader."
Dr. Mario adjusted his coat, looking at everyone in a professional manner.
"I'm here because, as a doctor, I've always believed in the power of healing and health. But I also know that sometimes, the battle can't be won with medicine alone. I've treated countless patients, but in a tournament like this, my skills as a fighter are also put to the test. I'm here to show that science and medicine don't just heal, they can defend too."
"Pichu! Pi, chu!" Pichu exclaimed, hopping around.
Xander translated:
"Pichu says he's here because he wants to be with his friends and help in any way he can, even though sometimes his electric bolts don't go as he expects. But he always tries with all his might."
Falco crossed his arms, observing the others with a critical gaze.
"I'm not the type to sit around waiting for things to work out on their own. In space, I've fought alongside my squad, facing battles that most living beings can't even imagine. I'm here because I'm a top-tier pilot and a natural fighter. I'm not going to let anyone tell me I don't belong in this tournament. I'm here to win."
Marth ran a hand through his hair, adjusting his sword with an elegant movement.
"I'm here because I've fought for my people, for my kingdom. I'm not looking for glory or fame, but for the opportunity to protect what matters. The sword is my tool, but my honor is what truly defines me. I'm here because destiny has chosen me to protect and lead, and that is reason enough to fight."
Lucina watched Marth and nodded softly.
"Like him, I've also fought for a better future. My fight is not just for me, but for those who are no longer here, for those yet to come. I'm here because, although my journey is different, my purpose remains the same: to protect the future and ensure that the mistakes of the past are not repeated."
Young Link smiled, raising his sword high.
"I'm here because I've always wanted to be a hero! No matter how young I am, I've faced great challenges! I'm here to prove that even the smallest can make a difference and fight for what's right."
Ganondorf let out a deep, dark laugh, his eyes gleaming with malevolence.
"Why am I here? Because this is my world. I am the king of darkness, the one destined to rule everything. No hero, no being of good can stop me. I'm here to claim what's mine and destroy those who dare challenge me. There's no other purpose, only total conquest."
Mewtwo briefly closed his eyes before communicating through telepathy.
"My presence here is not for any reason of honor or glory. I'm here because, although my existence was created with a purpose, my true reason is yet to be defined. I'm here to find my own path, to understand who I truly am beyond my origin."
Roy looked ahead, his hand resting on his sword.
"I'm here because the fight for justice never stops. I've fought for my home, for my people, and each battle has brought me one step closer to becoming the leader I need to be. I'm not looking for honor or fame, just to do what's right and protect those I love. That is my reason for being here."
Chrom nodded at Roy's words, his gaze fixed on the horizon.
"I'm a leader, and that comes with responsibilities. I'm here because the future of my people depends on the decisions I make. I've faced many battles, and each one has taught me something important. I'm not the strongest, but I'll fight until the end to make sure my kingdom is safe."
Mr. Game & Watch emitted a characteristic sound from the Game & Watch, a "beep-boop," followed by an animation showing a 1 on a black-and-white screen.
Xander, smiling, translated:
"Mr. Game & Watch is here because, although his existence is simple and straightforward, he's willing to participate in this tournament just as he would in any challenge. Sometimes, reasons don't need words. His presence says it all."
Meta Knight raised his sword, his voice deep and solemn.
"I'm here because my duty has always been to protect the honor of warriors. I'm not seeking fame or recognition. I'm here because my soul is bound to battle, to the fight for justice and the protection of those who deserve to be defended. My reason is as simple as that: the fight is my life."
Pit looked up at the sky, his expression calm but determined.
"I'm here because, as an angel, my mission has always been to protect the world and its inhabitants. Although I'm young, I've fought against dark beings, demons, and forces of evil. I'm here to prove that light can always overcome darkness, and to ensure that good always prevails. My reason is simple: I fight for peace and for those who cannot defend themselves."
Dark Pit, on the other hand, stood with a cold and calculating expression.
"I..." his voice resonated low and grave, "my presence here does not have the purity of the light that Pit defends. I exist to question that light, to challenge it. I don't fight for peace, but for chaos. I'm here because my purpose is to destroy what is in balance and create darkness where there was once clarity. I don't seek redemption, only chaos."
Wario let out a loud laugh and clashed his fists together enthusiastically.
"Why am I here?! It's easy! I'm here because I'm the greatest, the richest, and the strongest! Everyone wants to see my power! I don't care about anything else but winning, but of course, I also enjoy a good haul. It's the perfect tournament for someone like me! Money and fame await me!"
Snake adjusted his bandana, looking seriously at the others.
"I'm here because war never ends. I'm a soldier, and no matter what happens, there's always something more to fight for. I've faced enemies, gone through missions that have marked me, and this tournament is no different. I'm here to make sure those who fight for what's right have a chance, even if I have to do it my way. The mission never ends."
Ike raised his sword and held it firmly.
"I'm here because the fight for justice is what has always driven me. I've defended my land, my people, and I know that each battle makes me stronger. I'm not looking for honor or glory, I just want to make sure that those I love are safe. The reason I'm here is because, at the end of the day, what's right must always prevail."
Leaf, accompanied by her Pokémon, looked at Xander and then spoke with a soft and warm voice.
"I'm here because I've always been in service to Pokémon and their trainers. My goal is to teach and guide my companions through battles and life. My Pokémon, Squirtle, Ivysaur, and Charizard, are here because, like me, we fight together for a world where everyone can be free. And each of them has their own purpose, their own reason for being here."
Squirtle, Ivysaur, and Charizard simply said their names when mentioned.
Diddy Kong jumped around playfully.
"Yay! I'm here because I love having fun! I've always been by Donkey Kong's side, protecting our jungle and fighting whatever comes our way. But it's not just that, I'm also here to enjoy the competition! And of course, I'm an expert at acrobatics, so no one can stop me!"
Lucas looked up, thinking for a moment.
"I'm here because, even though I'm young, I've faced things others couldn't even imagine. I've learned that friendship and fighting for what's right are the most important things. I'm here to protect those who matter to me, to keep moving forward and improving with every challenge I face. Every battle teaches me something new, and that's why I'm here."
Sonic, with a confident smile, crossed his arms.
"I'm here because I've always fought for freedom. I've faced all kinds of obstacles, from robots to enemies with big evil plans. But what drives me is speed, the adrenaline of always being one step ahead. I don't like to stand still, I always move forward, and Smash is the perfect place to show what I'm capable of."
King Dedede growled and laughed, giving a couple of swings with his hammer.
Xander translated calmly:
"King Dedede is here because, as always, what he seeks is to be the biggest and the most feared. He doesn't need to say more. He just wants to be the one to impose his dominance in the tournament. No one can stop him, that's it."
Olimar looked around with his usual focused expression, and the Pikmin began to move in perfect synchrony.
Xander translated with a smile:
"Olimar is here because, even though he's small, he has a great responsibility. He and the Pikmin have faced many hardships, and this tournament is just another way to prove that no matter the size, there's always something worth defending. He fights for his home, for his Pikmin, and for the well-being of his world."
Lucario, with a deep gaze, closed his eyes and communicated telepathically.
Xander translated in a low voice:
"Lucario is here because his destiny has always been tied to the fight for balance. His connection to aura allows him to perceive things that others cannot, and his mission is to protect the innocent and maintain peace. He's here because he feels that this tournament gives him the opportunity to follow that path while learning more about his own power."
R.O.B. emitted a short beep and a series of robotic sounds.
Xander translated:
"R.O.B. is here because, although he doesn't have his own will like the others, his programming allows him to participate in challenges like this. He doesn't seek glory or personal victory, but he's here because, in the end, fulfilling his purpose is what defines his existence."
Toon Link smiled and raised his sword, as a gesture of confidence.
"I'm here because, like my counterpart, I fight to protect those I love. Even though I'm still young, I've always faced challenges and never backed down from them. This tournament is just another challenge I must overcome to ensure that evil doesn't prevail. My reason is simple: to keep fighting for justice and for my people."
Wolf crossed his arms and watched with a challenging gaze.
"I'm here because chaos is what I seek. I'm not here to be a hero, nor to follow rules. I fight because I like to dominate, I like being on top. I'm not a leader or a follower, I'm the one who goes after what I want without caring what others think. I'm here because this is where the strong fight, and I want to be among the best."
Villager smiled and raised his shovel, gesturing as if he were planting something in the ground. Then, he showed a flower he had found in his pocket and held it in front of him.
Xander smiled and translated:
"Villager is here because, as always, his focus is simple: to cultivate, build, and improve his home. Although he doesn't say much, his presence here reflects his nature: he's always working for a greater good, helping those in need and being a good friend to others. He's here because, despite everything, he enjoys the company of others and doing his part in any community."
Mega Man raised his arm, the cannon glowing with energy.
"I'm here because I've always fought to protect the innocent and stop evil. I've faced robots, villains, and threats of all kinds. Even though I'm a machine, my purpose is the same as any hero's: to protect those who can't defend themselves. I'm here to continue my mission, no matter the obstacles that come my way."
Elena, the Wii Fit Trainer, adjusted her workout uniform and smiled.
"I'm here because I've always believed in the importance of a healthy body and mind. Throughout my life, I've dedicated time to improving my own well-being and helping others do the same. Sometimes, the path to health isn't easy, but it's always worth it. I'm here because I want to keep inspiring others to reach their best version, both physically and mentally."
Rosalina observed the others with a serene and calm gaze.
"I'm here because, although my main mission is to protect the cosmos and the Lumas, I've also learned that the universe has much more to offer. Through my travels, I've discovered that every life, every being, has a purpose. My reason for being here is to learn more, to continue protecting those who depend on me, and to ensure that the balance of the universe is maintained."
Little Mac stretched, clenched his fists, and prepared to speak with determination.
"I'm here because no matter the size of the opponent or the challenge I face, I will always fight. My life has always been filled with obstacles, but I've never stopped. I'm here to prove that, even though I don't have an advantage in strength or special abilities, my heart and courage are what truly define me. And I will keep fighting, always."
Greninja jumped in the air, striking a combat stance with elegance and agility.
"Ninja," he simply said.
Xander translated with a smile:
"Greninja is here because, just like in his world, he always fights with speed and precision. His loyalty to his friends is unwavering, and his combat skills make him a formidable warrior. His reason for being here is clear: to fight for those who have accompanied him on his journey and always be ready to face new challenges."
Brawl, the Mii Brawler, rubbed his hands energetically.
"I'm here because there's nothing I like more than being at the center of the action. I'm always ready to give my best, with my unique style and limitless enthusiasm. For me, this tournament is just another opportunity to prove myself and show what I can do."
Sword, the Mii Swordfighter, drew his sword and held it confidently.
"I'm here because, as a swordfighter, my life has been marked by combat. I'm not looking for fame or recognition, but my skill with the sword is indisputable. I fight because it's in my nature, and this tournament is the perfect place to show that, with sword in hand, I'm always ready to face any challenge."
Gun, the Mii Gunner, raised her cannon and fired an imaginary energy beam, aiming with precision.
"I'm here because my skill with my cannon is my greatest strength. I've always fought from a distance, using my accuracy to take down any target. I seek nothing more than the chance to demonstrate my skill and face other competitors who challenge my aim. My reason is simple: I always aim for the target."
Palutena smiled and raised one hand, creating a sphere of light in her palm.
"I'm here because, as a goddess, my duty is to watch over the peace and balance of the world. Throughout my existence, I've faced challenges and dark beings that try to disturb harmony. I'm here to protect those who can't defend themselves, and although I don't seek glory, every battle is an opportunity to remember what truly matters: justice and the protection of the innocent."
Pac-Man rubbed his stomach and smiled widely, jumping with excitement.
"I'm here because my life has always been an adventure full of challenges and fun. Although my goal is simple, I've always fought to stay afloat, dodge obstacles, and, of course, enjoy any food. I'm here because I know that, in Smash, adventures never end, and there's always something new to face."
Robin looked around seriously, holding his magic book.
"I'm here because, although my destiny was marked by the power of magic, I've learned that true strength comes from knowledge and wisdom. I've fought to protect those I love and faced many adversities. My reason for being here is to continue learning, growing as a person and as a mage, and, of course, defending what's right."
Shulk touched the Monado bracelet and looked at the others with a thoughtful expression.
"I'm here because my destiny has been guided by the Monado, a sword with the power to alter the future. Through my travels, I've learned that no matter what the future holds, what's important is to fight for what we believe in. I'm here to protect my friends, change fate, and fight for a better future."
Bowser Jr. crossed his arms and let out a mischievous laugh, with a challenging expression.
"Obviously! I'm here because I'm the son of the great Bowser, and I want to prove that I can conquer everything on my own! No one can stop me! Smash will be just the first step in conquering the world... and, of course, to defeat Mario, naturally!"
Duck Hunt, the dog and the duck, looked at each other and then began making noises and moving around, with the dog barking joyfully and the duck quacking.
Xander tried to translate with a playful tone:
"Well... the dog seems excited, jumping around, and the duck... isn't so sure about all this. But together, they are a team that seeks to show that, even though they don't speak, they always have something to contribute in the battlefield. Their reason for being here, although not expressed in words, is clear: they are a dynamic duo, and they always support each other."
Ryu bowed slightly, his combat stance ready.
"I'm here because fighting is part of who I am. I've traveled the world, searching for the true meaning of 'the way of the warrior.' I don't seek fame or recognition, I only want to perfect my art and protect what's important to me. My reason for being here is simple: to face the strongest and continue on my path."
Ken smiled, with a confident yet serious air.

Bayonetta adjusted her glasses and smiled with confidence.

I don't fight for good or evil, I fight for myself, for my own purpose. I'm here because this tournament is another opportunity to enjoy the battle, to prove that no one can match me."
Inkling made some strange sounds, moving with agility and looking around.
Xander translated with a smile:
"Inkling is here because, although her communication doesn't rely on words, her presence in Smash is clear: she's always ready to face any challenge with bravery. Her world is full of fighting and competition, and she's here to show her skills, to represent her unique fighting style, and, of course, to have fun while doing it. Even though she doesn't speak, her energy and determination speak for themselves."
Ridley let out a fierce roar, his wings spread and his imposing body echoing through the room.
Xander translated with a solemn tone:
"Ridley is here because his sole purpose is destruction. His presence in this tournament seeks nothing but to sow chaos and devastation. He doesn't care for glory or fame, only the desire to be the greatest and most feared among all fighters. He's here because Smash is the only place where he can show his true power, and he won't rest until he has defeated everyone."
Simon adjusted his whip, looking towards the horizon with determination.
"I'm here because my mission has always been to face dark forces and protect the innocent. Throughout my life, I've fought against infernal creatures and demons, and this tournament is just another battle I must win. I don't seek honor or fame, just to fulfill my duty. I'm here because, in the end, it's always necessary to fight for what's right."
Richter, with a posture similar to his ancestor's, also adjusted his whip and looked at the others with seriousness.
"I'm here because, although my destiny seemed to be marked by fighting evil, I've learned that sacrifice and struggle aren't always what they seem. I've fought to protect those I love and to ensure that evil doesn't prevail. My reason for being here is very similar to Simon's: to fight for good and for the future of those around me."
King K. Rool let out a sinister laugh and struck a few punches into the air with his large belly, looking at the others with a disdainful expression.
"I'm here because my only motivation is domination. This tournament is just an excuse to prove that I'm not just a king: I am THE king, the supreme leader, and I'm going to crush anyone who crosses my path. I seek nothing but absolute power and the recognition I deserve."
Isabelle approached with a warm smile, greeting everyone cheerfully.
"I'm here because, although my job as mayor is important, I've always believed that true joy comes from helping others. My mission is to maintain harmony and peace, and being here allows me to do just that: learn and share moments with others. My reason for being in Smash is simple: to create a better world, one day at a time."
Incineroar let out a roar and lowered his head, raising his claws with force.
"Incineroar!" he exclaimed arrogantly.
Xander translated:
"Incineroar is here because, just like in his arena fights, his life revolves around fighting and competition. He's a fighter at heart, and while his motivation isn't always the noblest, he always fights with the intensity of a true champion. His reason for being here is clear: to prove that, as a champion, he has what it takes to be the best."
Piranha Plant moved around its pot, extending its leaves like arms, in a clumsy but purposeful motion.
Xander looked at Piranha Plant and translated playfully:
"Piranha Plant is here because, although its fighting style is a bit... peculiar, its ability to surprise and adapt is what makes it valuable. It doesn't speak, but its determination and ability to attack from the shadows keep it in the fight. Though it doesn't express itself verbally, its presence in Smash is just as significant as anyone else's."
Joker leaned on his gun, his gaze sly and playful.
"I'm here because my life has always been marked by the fight against injustice and rules that serve no purpose. I'm not a conventional hero, nor do I consider myself a villain. I fight for what I believe is right, but in a way few understand. Smash is just another stage to show that, with a bit of wit and chaos, I can always come out on top."
Hero/The Luminary stood tall with a solemn posture, looking ahead.
