Wei Wuxian watched with a fond smile as his froslass snuck up on Lan Zhan’s froslass, tackling her into a hug. Those two pokemon were so cute to watch, he would forever be thankful that they get along so well despite their differing personalities. Truthfully, those girls reminded Wei Wuxian of Lan Zhan and himself in many ways.
It’d been three years since he and Lan Zhan got married and just over two years since they opened the first joint gym: ice and ghost. Lan Zhan, obviously, is the ice gym leader, while Wei Wuxian is the ghost-type leader. It took a lot of effort for them to open their gym; Lan Qiren, specifically, was quite vocally against it for a long time, frustrated that Wei Wuxian would be bringing so many ghost-type pokemon into the Cloud Recesses. But eventually, he relented, and the Gusu Ice/Ghost Gym was born.
The day before they officially opened, Wei Wuxian and Lan Zhan had decided to gift each other a pokemon that they believed would suit the other for this endeavour. In the end, they had the same idea, both choosing froslass. The ice/ghost typing of the pokemon was too good to pass up, plus froslass is objectively adorable. The rest of their respective teams are vastly different, but they always start every battle by each sending out their froslass. It just nails home that, despite how some people were displeased or confused by the merging of ice and ghost in a gym together, there are pokemon with that exact typing.
Lan Zhan walked into the room just as his froslass used fake tears to be dramatic over being “scared” by Wei Wuxian’s froslass. Wei Wuxain chuckled. “Your girl is quite the drama queen,” he teased.
“Mn,” Lan Zhan agreed, walking over to press a chaste kiss to his lips. “She must have learned it from my husband.”
Wei Wuxian gasped, clutching a hand to his chest. “Me!? I have nary a dramatic bone in my body, my good sir. How dare thee accuse me thusly?” The sound of tinkling laughter chimed from the edge of the room. Wei Wuxian looked over to see both froslass giggling at his display. He forced down his smile and pointed at them. “And just what do you two think you’re laughing at?”
He watched as his girl floated over, twirling in a circle in front of him before tapping his chest once.
He laughed gently, smiling at her. “Oh, I see.” He tapped her on the head fondly, watching her preen before she scurried back over to Lan Zhan’s froslass, who had watched the interaction with a pleased look in her eyes. Much the same as Lan Zhan when Wei Wuxian met his gaze.
“You are wonderful, Wei Ying.”
Wei Wuxian felt his cheeks heat up. “What? I mean, I know that, of course, but what makes you say that all of a sudden?”
Lan Zhan shook his head. “No reason other than you being you.”
Out of the corner of his eye, he saw both froslass whispering to each other, giggling amongst themselves. “You are wonderful too, Lan Zhan. The best husband a man could ask for.”
“Impossible,” Lan Zhan argued, kissing him once more. “You are.”
Wei Wuxian laughed again.
“A-Yuan and Jingyi want to challenge the gym again today. Jingyi seems very certain that they have finally structured their teams to beat us.”
“Oh?” Wei Wuxian perked up at that. He loved it when those two challenged their gym. “How loud was he when he told you that?”
Lan Zhan huffed. “I am surprised you could not hear him.”
He chuckled at that. “Ah, Jingyi is quite the excitable young man.”
“Much like you were as a teen,” Lan Zhan agreed.
“Which explains why you are so fond of the boy.”
Lan Zhan merely shrugged. “Shall we set up the gym?”
“And do a warm-up battle for fun?” He asked, both froslass appearing in front of them and staring at Lan Zhan with wide eyes. “You wouldn’t deny our girls that, would you?”
“When have I ever denied them—or you—anything?” Lan Zhan replied simply.
Wei Wuxian smiled. “Let’s go then!”
After two years, they had the process of setting their gym up down to a science. It wasn’t long before they were battling each other, froslass first. They made their way through their entire teams. They knew each other’s battle style and movesets like it was their own, so it was always a close match. Wei Wuxian came out victorious this time, his mimikyu hanging on by a thread (pun intended).
They healed up their teams and waited for their first challengers of the day.
Unsurprisingly, Lan Sizhui and Lan Jingyi were the first to show up. They made their way through the gym’s puzzles and mazes with ease, having challenged them so many times already. When they appeared in front of Wei Wuxian and Lan Zhan, Wei Wuxian couldn’t help but laugh a little at how bouncy Lan Jingyi was, especially when standing beside the calm and composed Lan Sizhui. He was so fond of those two boys.
“Well, well, well,” Wei Wuxian drawled. “Look who’s back!”
Lan Jingyi smiled somewhat manically. “We’ve come to challenge you and win!” he declared.
“Bold words.” He smirked. “Ready, Lan Zhan?”
“Mn.”
With a flourish (from Wei Wuxian at least), they posed and then sent out their starting pokemon, both froslass popping out of their pokeballs with sweet little battle cries, raring to go. Lan Sizhui and Lan Jingyi sent out their first pokemon—an absol from Lan Sizhui and Lan Jingyi had a chandelure. Wei Wuxain smirked; this was looking to be a good fight.
And he was correct.
It was quite a challenge, but in the end, Lan Sizhui and Lan Jingyi finally managed to defeat them. Wei Wuxian watched with fondness as his mimikyu and Lan Zhan’s Alolan ninetails both fainted.
There was a beat of stunned silence, then Lan Jingyi shouted and jumped onto Lan Sizhui, nearly taking the other boy to the ground with the sudden weight of him. Wei Wuxian and Lan Zhan watched them celebrate with smiles on their faces, proud of how far the two boys had come since they started their trainer journeys.
“I believe you will be needing these now,” Wei Wuxian announced, getting their attention. He and Lan Zhan were each holding a gym badge for the two boys. “Congratulations.”
“You both did very well. We are proud of you,” Lan Zhan added.
Both boys flushed with an embarrassed blush as they accepted the gym badges. “Thank you both,” Lan Sizhui said.
“Th-thanks,” Lan Jingyi said as he took his badge from Wei Wuxian.
“Are you boys free tonight? Lan Zhan and I want to take you out to celebrate your win.”
They stared at each other with wide eyes before looking back at them, nodding. “We are free.”
Wei Wuxian clapped them both on the shoulder, pulling them into a crushing hug. “Great! That’s settled then. Meet us out front once the gym closes and we’ll go wherever you boys want.”
“Well done,” Lan Zhan added again. “We will see you later.”
“Okay! Bye!” Lan Jingyi said as he squirmed from Wei Wuxian’s hold.
“Thank you, we will see you later,” Lan Sizhui replied, returning Wei Wuxian’s hug fully once Lan Jingyi freed himself before extricating himself as well and leaving the gym.
“Well!” Wei Wuxian said once they had left. “That was fun!”
Lan Zhan met his gaze, eyes soft. “It was. They will become a force to be reckoned with.”
A startled laugh escaped him. “No doubt about it.”
