Summary
The Cloud Recesses Guest Lectures were held every three years for disciples between the ages of fifteen and eighteen. They had three purposes.
The first (and the reason it was hosted by the Lan) was to provide a shared baseline understanding of the core cultivation topics that underpinned every sect while not divulging clan-specific approaches.
The second was to create opportunities for friendships and alliances that would reduce the chance of war between the clans.
The third, and most important, was for the clans to replenish their bloodline by finding compatible mates with strong cultivation skills. In the last month of the lectures, challenges to test compatibility could be issued.
Wei Wuxian challenges Lan Wangji, sure that they are compatible mates. The Lan refuse to allow the Challenge.
They come to regret it.

Summary
Wei Wuxian presents as an omega just over a month after they arrive for the Cloud Recesses lectures.
The thing is... no one expected him to actually be an omega, and his presentation is, in a word, messy. Feral omegas aren't natural, not as far as those in power are concerned, and they certainly aren't meant to cultivate alongside alphas and betas.
They definitely aren't supposed to form a fractured bond with an alpha like Lan Wangji, who does not handle the situation well in the moment, and is then forced to watch the aftermath his actions cause. Meanwhile, Wei Wuxian struggles to come to terms with what it means to be an omega, and how it feels to be rejected by the only person your soul has ever cried out for.
Spoiler alert: It's not fucking great

Summary
The Lan Sect had a secret.
It wasn’t a very well-kept secret. Whispers of the truth snaked through the cultivation world, never confirmed but ever-present. Their only proof was in the strangeness of the main family line in the Lan Clan. Their unnatural stillness. Their fluid movements, akin to those of a predator. Their oddly cold, pale skin. The faint tint of red in their eyes when the light hit them at a certain angle. And, more than anything, the strict solitude of the Lan Clan. They rarely left the confines of the Cloud Recesses and the careful distance feuled the rumors.
Within the Lan Sect itself, however, the truth was known. Disciples that joined learned the history of the sect and, with it, the truth.
The Lan Clan was descended from a long line of vampires.

Or, the members of the Lan Clan are vampires who take a single human partner to be their source of blood. Lan Xichen and Lan Wangji are reluctant to take a human partner after seeing the tragedy of their parents. But, fate has different plans in store.
