Work Text:

You’d always known that working as a lawyer was tiring, you’d known law students when you were in university and even then the workload was massive, and it only increased once you were working. There was nobody that was clearer with than your poor Matt. Granted, the fact that he was moonlighting as a vigilante certainly didn’t help that fact, but nonetheless he was truly and completely exhausted a lot of the time. More than once you’d come up with an idea for a date you could go on once he had just a few hours of free time, and he’d ended up cancelling because he was too tired. He always felt so bad, but of course you didn’t mind. You understood. In the moment it was a little sad, naturally, but it was easy enough to get over it. You’d head over with takeout and curl up on the sofa with him to relax instead. You liked just hanging out with him at his apartment. But still, dates were nice.

Today, you were sure you’d picked the perfect thing that he could do, even if he was truly and wholly exhausted. He’d been free most of the morning, and would be free until late in the afternoon, so you’d planned to head to the location at just before midday so you could have at least two hours together, of sunlight.

Matt knew nothing, you’d refused to tell him what you had planned even when he asked, and so he simply followed along and trusted you to have a handle on what you wanted to do together. He trusted you whole heartedly anyway, so it was almost too easy to just lace his fingers with yours, his other hand carrying his cane, and let you lead.

It took some time to get there, and all the while he’d occasionally ask again.
“Do I get to know where we’re going yet?” He’d ask, and each time you’d reply, “not yet.” And by the time you’d arrived, he must have asked a dozen times. You had no doubt in your mind that he must’ve worked it out eventually, because that’s just who Matt is, but you wouldn’t complain that he was playing along. It made everything just that little bit more fun, to pretend and play along.

Finally, as you arrived, you released Matt’s hand to unzip your backpack, which left him curious.
“We’re here? But we’re still outside.” He said, and when you glanced up you saw the light breeze just gently mussing his hair. From your bag you pulled a picnic blanket which you laid out over the grass beneath your feet, then you carefully pulled out the various snacks and drinks you’d brought along for the both of you to enjoy.
“Sit.” You insisted, and you watched as his nostrils flared just slightly, his head tilted just enough for him to focus on the rustling of the leaves and birdsong in the distance.
“Are we having a picnic?” He asked, a small smile tugging at his lips that made the corners of his eyes crinkle.
“We are. Now sit.”

Sit he did.

Matt kicked off his shoes and you did the same to get more comfortable, the two of you sitting side by side on the blanket, legs extended in front of you both. You talked him throguh the different foods that you’d brought along and opened a soda can for him, grabbed a paper plate to stack it with the various snacks that he wanted to eat. From your bag then you pulled a speaker to play some music, just loud enough for you both to hear so as to not disturb other people in the area. The sun was warm on your skin, a comforting feel as the days were growing longer and the weather warmer.

“This is pretty different to what you normally plan, why the change in pace?” Matt asked between bites, taking a moment to brush some crumbs from his lap and onto the blanket beneath him.
“Well, you’re always so tired. I wanted to do something a little calmer for once, match your pace instead of hoping you’ll magically wake up one day with enough energy to do something more.”
“I’m sorry, I do want to do the higher energy things with you.” Matt said, but you reached across to take his hand, gently squeezing it.
“I know that, and it’s okay. I know how busy you are, and how hard you work, in every aspect of your life. I’m not going to ask you for more than you can give. On a day where you do have the energy, we can do something a little more fast paced. For today? Spending a few hours in the sunlight, sharing food and being close? That’s enough.” You insisted.

Matt leaned down to meet your lips, just the lighted contact as they brushed, his smile fond.
“You’re too good to me.” He murmured, pressing in closer to give you a real kiss. Not rushed or explorative, just a tender gesture.
“I’m not. I’m just doing my best to be what you deserve.”
“Trust me - you’re all that and more.” His lips met yours again, the sound of other people milling the area fading into the background as the entire world narrowed down to just that feeling, and the emotion connected to it.
