Work Text:

It wasn’t exactly ideal, but sometimes when your partner spends half their life travelling the country for work, you make things happen where you can. JJ promised she’d never miss date night, and she was determined to make that a reality. Even if that meant video calling you from her hotel room after a long, gruelling day at work.

“Hey baby.” You greeted once her face appeared on screen. You sat on the bed you shared when she was home to share it, curled up under the blanket that she’d claimed as hers, because it still had the lingering scent of her perfume. She’d been gone for a week this time, which was pretty average, but that didn’t make it any easier. You missed her just as much every time she was away.

JJ sighed and pulled her knees to her chest where she sat at the desk in her hotel room, resting her chin on her knees.
“Hey.” She softly replied, the tension in her shoulders seeming to ease as her eyes flicked over the screen, taking in every detail of your face, however blurry. She looked tired, as she usually did when you heard from her when she was off somewhere in another state working. She worked hard, always pushing herself as much as she could manage - the whole team did.
“Tell me about work?” You offered, the same as you always did. It wasn’t always what she wanted, and sometimes she outright couldn’t tell you. But you’d seen the press event on the TV earlier that day, they’d caught the unsub and now they were just finishing out the night before returning home early tomorrow. Some cases were gruesome, the sort she didn’t want to relive or burden you with, but tonight, she needed to share. She usually did when the case involved kids.

JJ was beautiful, even when she looked exhausted, and just a little haunted. You watched and listened intently as she spoke, listening to her speak without interruption, only nodding along or humming in the pauses, not wanting to cut her train of thought or make her think twice about sharing. Sometimes, if you tried to ask questions, she’d doubt herself and take it back, or backtrack on something she’d been about to tell you because she ‘should’t make you deal with that’. You hated it, you wanted to share her every burden and ensure she was okay, the same as she did with you. It didn’t matter that your day job involved so much less trauma, you both deserved a bit of respite after a long day, a chance to unload whatever weighed heavy on your shoulders.

“I’m sorry, I’ve been talking for forever.” She finally said, and immediately you shook your head.
“No, that’s fine, you clearly needed that.” You replied, sitting up slightly straighter to show that she still had your full attention.
“It’s getting late for you, don’t you have work tomorrow?” JJ then asked to change the topic, glancing at her watch - a digital she’d bought specifically so she could always have both your time and her own on her wrist when she was away. It was the little details like that that made your heart flutter, made you feel truly special to her.
“I do, but I don’t care. I’ll be tired for a hundred days at work if it means I get to help you unwind.” You declared, making her softly laugh. Of course you’d say that.
“Well, I’ll bring you coffee on your lunch break. How does that sound?” She offered, face finally breaking out in that soft smile you loved seeing on her face so much. It just melted something inside you every time, like you were falling in love with her again and again.
“Perfect, especially since I’ll have the prettiest delivery girl in the state.”
“Just in the state?” She asked, soft smile transforming in an instant to an amused little smirk, both brows raised.
“Well, maybe one of these days Megan Fox will start doing deliveries. You never know.” You replied with a shrug, and seeing JJ truly laugh in reply was all you needed. You just loved to hear her laugh, to know that you were the one that had distracted her long enough to do it, to bring her joy.

“We should be back at around nine. I’ll head into the office to drop off some things and finish my paperwork, then I’ll be free for the rest of the day. I’ll bring you lunch, and I’ll make dinner.” JJ explained once she’d calmed down, and you reached over to grab your phone charger when you realised how low your battery had gotten. Not on your watch.
“Sounds good, baby. I can’t wait to see you again.”
“Me neither. Thanks for letting me talk your ear off.”
“I’ll always be around to do that for you, you never need to doubt that.” You assured her, heart fluttering at the almost nervous way she brushed some hair out of her face, like she was a teenager all over again.
“I know.” She confirmed with a small not.
“I’ll remind you every time anyway.”
