"Harua!" Maki calls his name, when he spots Harua walk towards the school gate. Harua immediately breaks into a smile seeing him.
Maki stops near him. "Wait a second" He starts fixing Harua's hair which were a bit messed up at the forehead. Harua blushes a deep red mumbling a little thanks to him.
"Are you excited for valentines?" Maki asks, all of a sudden.
"Huh?" Harua turns to him, surprised at the unexpected question. "Why would I be excited for it? It's not like I have a date"
"But there's going to be an event in school that day, hosted by some senior students. Do you wanna go?" He asks.
Harua slowly nods, smiling. This would be the perfect chance for him, to tell Maki about his feelings.
The moment they stepped into the class, there was chaos going on in there.
"Juju please be my valentine?" Nicholas was sitting on one knee, trying to convince Euijoo, who kept shoving him away.
"Fuck off already" Euijoo mutters, walking away from him, but Nicholas held onto his wrist.
Maki laughs, nudging Harua. "Seems like Nicholas is getting rejected for the 100th time"
Harua observes two of his classmates, and specially Nicholas who always got rejected by his friend whom he had a crush on.
He wonders, how will he be able to confess to Maki? Would Maki reject him like Euijoo rejects Nicholas?
"I forgot to hand over Leehan's pen to him" Maki slaps a hand to his forehead. "Harua I will be back in a minute. If the teacher comes, tell them I will be back soon"
And with that Maki walks out of the class, leaving Harua to sit down on their shared desk first.
He takes out his books and other things when suddenly a girl shows up at their table. Harua tries reading her name tag, she definitely wasn't from their class or else he would recognise her.
Kim Yoonchae
"Hi" she waves at Harua, which he politely returns staring at her. "You're Maki's friend right? I always see you two around"
Harua nods. "You're right"
"Did Maki not come today? I had something to give him" Yoonchae says, looking around.
"He just went to the other section a while ago" Harua tells her. "Why were you looking for him?"
"Oh I had to give him this" She shows a letter to Harua which had a heart stamp. Harua feels his heart sinking already.
"Oh? Valentines?" Harua asks, putting up a smile to which Yoonchae nods.
"I guess I will come later in break" Yoonchae says. "Please tell him I was looking for him"
Harua nods, trying to not to sulk too hard. So this girl was going to ask Maki for valentines? Harua stood no chance now.
Maki would absolutely accept her proposal. Harua should just step away now. He decides when Maki comes back, he would decline the offer to go out on Valentines.
Because it would hurt him more when Maki cancels the plan first after getting Yoonchae's proposal.
He sits back, trying not to think too much about it, but his chest physically ached.
Maki returns back to class with a smile, sitting beside Harua whose mood was completely off now. Maki nudges him.
"What's up?" Maki asks.
"A girl came looking for you, from the other section" Harua tells.
"Oh really!" Maki raises his eyebrows. "Who was it"
"I don't know" Harua answers, turning away. "She said she would approach you again in break"
"Well okay then" Maki says, taking out his own stuff from his bag as the professor entered. They couldn't get time to chat anymore after that, and Harua didn't crack any jokes either.
He was dreading it. He knew Maki would come and tell him about Yoonchae's proposal after break, and he totally wasn't ready to hear it. He didn't want to hear Maki telling him that he's gonna spend valentines with someone else.
Just when they are about to leave for break, Harua grabs Maki's sleeve stopping him from leaving.
"What's wrong?" Maki asks.
"Maki.." Harua hesitates. "I don't wanna go out on valentines"
"Why?" Maki stares in confusion.
"I just don't want to"
"We can stay indoors too" Maki suggests. "Like your place or mine, doesn't matter-"
"No" Harua refuses. "I don't want to spend it with you"
"Oh" Maki tries not to look hurt, but he was. "Oh I see, alright. It's fine I won't force you"
"Yeah" Harua puts up a smile. "Look the girl is here again" he points towards the door where Yoonchae was standing, waving at Maki.
"Is that the girl?" Maki asks, turning to Harua.
"I am heading to the cafe with Euijoo and Nicholas" Harua says. "You can join after you meet up with her"
Harua doesn't wait for Maki's response but just runs off leaving the two in the class.
-
Harua walks into the cafe to find Nicholas and Euijoo bickering yet once again. Harua sighs, walking up to join them.
"Who are you even gonna spend your valentines with juju if not me?" Nicholas was still pestering him about the date, and Euijoo was giving him the worse resting bitch face in existence.
"Hey guys" Harua greets, his voice barely audible.
Both Nicholas and Euijoo immediately whip their heads towards him, noticing his tone.
"What's wrong" Euijoo frowns, stepping forward. "You sound upset"
"Yeah what happened Harua?" Nicholas asks, putting a hand on his shoulder.
"Nothing guys, let's go eat" Harua says, before he gets his tray. Both Nicholas and Euijoo share a look before just following him till the table.
Once they are settled down to eat, Nicholas was yet again forcing Euijoo out on the date.
"If I agree, will you stop eating my brain cells away?" Euijoo slams his hand hard on the table, making Harua also snap out of his thoughts.
"I mean of course" Nicholas says, before he turns to Harua, giving him another look of concern. "Harua you're really worrying me"
Euijoo frowns too, looking at Harua who wasn't cracking jokes like usual. "I am fine" he answers.
"Do you wanna hang out with us on valentines?" Euijoo asks.
"Why would he have to?" Nicholas frowns. "Doesn't he have Maki for that"
Harua's spoon falls from his hand, down on the floor. He bends down to grab it, but another hand picks it up first. He looks up to find Maki.
"I ll get you another one Rua" Maki says, before going to get the spoon changed.
Nicholas turns to Harua. "Why did you react like that at Maki's mention. Is something up?"
"Did you both fight? If that's the case we three can hang out on valentines-"
Nicholas kicks Euijoo's leg under the table. "Already ruining our date"
"Shut the fuck up" Euijoo glares at Nicholas.
"You show me some mercy first" Nicholas says, and Harua once again sighs because the two had started bickering again.
Maki returns a minute later, but Harua immediately stands up once he sits beside him. "Where are you going?" Maki asks.
"I am full" Harua says. "I am going back"
He picks up his tray and leaves the cafeteria before any one of them could stop him. Nicholas and Euijoo stop arguing for a moment, to assess the situation.
"Are you and Harua fighting? You guys seemed fine in the morning" Euijoo asks.
"We're not fighting" Maki says. "I don't know he was fine in the morning. He agreed to our valentines plan but then suddenly an hour later he cancelled it. I don't know what's wrong"
"He didn't say anything to us either" Nicholas says. "I thought maybe you fucked up something to make him like that"
"Why are you quick to blame me?" Maki glares at Nicholas.
"You have a record" Nicholas rolls his eyes.
"Euijoo ask your boyfriend to shut the fuck up" Maki says.
"He's not my boyfriend" Euijoo says. "And secondly I been trying to shut him up since a while"
"Try kissing me that could work" Nicholas winks, which earns him another tight slap on the arm.
Maki sighs, watching the two. His thoughts once again drifted off to Harua. He didn't understand why the other started acting like this all of a sudden.
-
The days leading up to Valentine's Day, Harua barely talked to Maki. Although they were desk mates, Harua always had his earphones in and avoided conversation.
This made Maki sulk. He doesn't know why Harua hates him suddenly. He tries not to be too upset, but last night he almost cried thinking about it.
The possibility of Harua getting tired of him. Because there was no other reasonable explanation for Harua to get distant like this all of a sudden.
Maki once again tries talking to him, when it's break. "Lunch with Nico and Euijoo today?"
Harua shook his head. "Me and Taki are going to the library. He needs my help in some work, sorry Maki"
And with that Harua leaves, while Maki sat there on his seat. He totally wasn't hallucinating this behaviour. Harua definitely doesn't like him anymore.
He's sitting with Euijoo and Nicholas, since he didn't have other friends apart from Harua. But whenever he sits with them, it's like he's watching his parents fight or something.
"I am telling you to stop stealing shit from my bag" Euijoo glares at him.
"I just took your notebook, to copy off your homework. That's not stealing" Nicholas reasons.
"All the more reason to reject your ass" Euijoo rolls his eyes.
"Guys" Maki slams his hand hard on the table to get their attention. "Help me out here"
"Oh is it about Harua?" Nicholas asks, propping his elbows on the table to look at Maki.
"Well you're smart" Maki claps his hands together. "I don't understand why he hates me suddenly"
"Maybe he found someone cooler than you" Nicholas says mindlessly, which makes Euijoo slap his arm hard.
"Don't worry Maki, I am pretty sure that's not the case. Don't take him seriously" Euijoo says, noticing Maki already sulking hearing Nicholas's assumption.
"Is Taki the cooler one?" Maki asks, slowly lifting his head up. "Harua is hanging around him all the time"
"Maybe Taki is his valentine" Nicholas says, continuing to add fuel to the fire.
"Nico shut the fuck up already" Euijoo smacks his shoulder hard.
"Could Taki really be..?" Maki trails off, already feeling his heart break into two. Did Harua decline the valentines meet up because he wanted to be with Taki?
But why Taki? Why did Harua have to choose Taki over Maki? Maki was his closest friend, and even if he didn't like Maki in that way (which breaks Maki's heart) he could still spend the day with a 'platonic date'.
Maki stands up to leave, his chest physically aching at the thought of Harua spending that day with someone else.
Meanwhile Harua was no less. He kept zoning out while sitting in the library with Taki. He kept thinking how happy Maki would look with Yoonchae, and how they both would spend the perfect valentines together.
"Are you tearing up?" Taki asks, nudging him.
Harua panics, blinking furiously. "No my eyes were stinting, anyways where were we?"
-
It was a day before Valentines now, and almost everyone was asking their dates out today. Harua knew that Maki would definitely be asking Yoonchae out today.
He was still Maki's desk mate, so he couldn't completely ignore his presence, but he avoided unnecessary talk with him.
After class was over, Harua walks over to Taki not even greeting Maki a goodbye. Maki felt really hurt now, he felt like he would break down into tears now.
He follows after Harua and Taki, when they are exiting the school. His heart hurting so much. Both Taki and Harua separate ways, before bidding each other goodbye.
Maki couldn't take it anymore. He had to confront Harua. He had to ask him why the other was ignoring him so bad. What did he possibly do to make Harua hate him.
"Harua!" Maki calls running after him.
Harua freezes in his tracks, shutting his eyes close tightly. He slowly turns around to find Maki catching his breath in front of him.
"I wanna talk to you" Maki says, panting.
"What is it" Harua asks, with no emotion in his voice.
Maki steps forward. "Did I offend you in some way?"
Harua blinks before he shakes his head. "No" he mumbles.
"Then do you not like me anymore? Am I annoying now?" Maki asks, his voice breaking.
Harua looks away, seeing that Maki was about to cry in front of him. He hated that he was the reason for making Maki this upset.
"No Maki, you have got it wrong. I don't hate you" Harua answers, still avoiding his eyes.
"Then look at me!" Maki demands, his eyes brimming with tears. Harua slowly turns his head towards Maki, and feels his heart sink. Maki was really crying right now.
"Why are you avoiding me? I don't understand" Maki asks.
"I don't want to be in the way" Harua says, looking down.
"Huh?" Maki furrows his eyebrows. "In the way of what?"
"You and your valentines date" Harua answers.
Maki tilts his head in confusion, while tears still streamed down his face. "What date? I don't have a date because you refused going out with me! What date are we talking about here?"
"Not me Maki" Harua says quickly. "I was never the option-"
"You were the only option Harua" Maki speaks up. "I only asked you"
"Stop lying to me Maki" Harua looks away. "I don't even understand why do you need to lie to me. Yoonchae showed me the letter that morning-"
"Yoonchae?!" Maki says in disbelief. "Are you seriously talking about that girl! I refused her that day! And we didn't have a conversation longer than two minutes!"
Harua blinks, staring at Maki. What the fuck?
-that day-
"Maki" Yoonchae walks over from the doorframe towards Maki's desk after Harua had left. She hands him over the letter.
Maki takes the letter from her hand. "Is this for me?"
She nods. "I wrote this for you" she looks down shyly. "Can you be my valentines for this year?"
Maki reads the letter, while Yoonchae was still standing in front of him. He puts it down politely smiling at her. "Well Yoonchae, it's nice of you to approach me..this boldly and tell me your feelings but.."
"But?" Yoonchae looks at him, already disappointed with what was coming.
"I already have someone I like" Maki says. "And I really wish I could spend my valentines with them. I don't want to spend it with anyone else"
"Oh" she looks down, dejectedly. "Who is it?"
"That's a secret" Maki smiles.
"So you rejected her right there?" Harua asks, still in disbelief about this whole situation.
"Yes! The Yoonchae thing didn't last longer than 5 minutes. Did you seriously think I would spend my valentines with a random girl who I don't even know?"
"Then" Harua looks down, fidgeting with his hands. "Do you have someone you like?"
Maki takes a deep breath, stepping forward to get even closer to Harua. "Do you seriously not realise?"
"Maki trust me I don't know-"
"It's you" Maki confesses. "It has always been you"
Harua widens his eyes in shock, before he blinks twice staring at Maki, and then he slaps a hand to his mouth, stumbling back. Maki immediately grabs his arm to steady him.
"Careful" Maki says, before pulling Harua even closer to him. He brings Harua's hand over to his chest.
"Feel it?" Maki asks. "It's beating like crazy, because of you"
Harua could actually feel his beating heart, he slowly looks up into Maki's eyes, finally no more tears in there. Harua brings his hands to his face to wipe the tears from his cheeks.
"I love you Maki" Harua confesses, and this time it was Maki who stumbled backwards from shock and Harua had to hold him back, before he breaks into a laugh.
"Warn me before saying stuff like that, I wasn't prepared" Maki says, smiling widely.
"Actually" Harua looks down shyly. "The reason why I refused the Valentine's Day hang out was..because of Yoonchae"
"Seriously?" Maki frowns. "You made me suffer for days because of this reason? Oh god Harua"
"I am sorry" Harua apologises. "I thought I didn't stand a chance"
"You're seriously so dense" Maki flicks his forehead. "How could you even assume I would be accepting that girls date"
"I mean she was pretty" Harua says, sulking.
Maki leans forward, colliding his forehead with Harua's until their noses were touching. "For me, you're the prettiest so, no one else matters"
Harua blushes hard, avoiding eye contact with him at all costs. Maki steps back, before he gets on one knee. "Harua" he says.
Maki grabs Harua's hand who was smiling looking down at him. "Will you be my valentine"
Harua breaks into soft giggles before nodding. "Yes of course Maki"
He then pulls Maki up by his hand, only to find them inches apart from each other now. The distance between them was getting lesser and lesser as Maki leaned forward. He smiles before tilting his head sideways to press a soft kiss against Harua's lips, who immediately closed his eyes, grabbing Maki's shoulder to hold himself. Maki then leaves kisses all across his face making Harua giggle and blush like crazy.
They both separate to look into each others eyes, smiling like idiots. Maki offers his hand to Harua, who accepts it, interlinking their fingers together.
"Tomorrow will be the best valentines of my life" Maki says, before he brings Harua's hand to his lips, kissing it softly, turning him into a red flustered mess.
-
"Juju please accept my chocolate" Nicholas whines, clinging to Euijoo who sighed loudly for the 10th time.
"Nicholas you have been feeding me chocolates since an hour! I am going to get diabetes like this" Euijoo shoves him away.
"I got them with such love for you, and you're rejecting them. You're breaking my heart" Nicholas sulks.
"Nico please spare me please" Euijoo claps his hands together. "I have eaten 5 of them already, no more please"
Just then Maki and Harua walk into class, holding hands. Nicholas lets out a loud gasp before tapping Euijoo's shoulder. "Look at them"
Maki pulls out Harua's chair for him, and places his bag on the side. He then sat down on his own chair, before he turns around to fix Harua's necktie for him.
"Looks like they made up" Euijoo says smiling.
"Even Maki got his date, and here you keep rejecting me" Nicholas sulks, crossing his arms.
Euijoo sighs, shaking his head before he pulls Nicholas towards himself, quickly pecking his cheek and then shoves him away again.
Nicholas gasps loudly, before he squeals turning everyone's attention on him. Euijoo had to slap a hand to his mouth to shut him up.
Maki stares at Harua, giving him heart eyes while Harua pushes his arm away, feeling shy.
"Stop staring already" Harua whines.
"Can't I look at my gorgeous valentine?" Maki says, putting his chin in his hands as he continues to stare at Harua.
"But I am feeling shy" Harua says.
"You look even cuter, when shy" Maki says, poking his cheek before he leans forward. He looks around for a moment before quickly giving Harua a kiss on his cheek.
"Stop we're in class!" Harua shoves him away.
"It's Valentine's Day today" Maki reminds. "No one cares"
"But still" Harua says, but then he reaches for Maki's hand slowly taking it in his own.
"I see you Harua" Maki laughs. "You're adorable"
Maki then pulls out a rose from his bag, giving it to Harua. "For my beautiful valentine"
Harua shyly takes it from him. "Thanks, I got you something too"
He pulls out a keychain from his bag, which had a small crocheted puppy on it, and hands it over to Maki.
"This reminded me of you" Harua says. "You look like this when you sulk"
Maki stares at it in awe before he pulls Harua in a hug all of a sudden. "Oh my god you just made me fall deeper if that was even possible"
Harua blushes, returning the hug. "Glad you like it"
Maki pulls away from the hug, before he once again looks around to see if anyone was looking and then pecks Harua's lips quickly, causing him to turn red.
"Hey stop that! We're in class" Harua blushes hard.
"Can't help it really, I wish the stupid classes end soon, so I can kiss you once again" Maki sends a wink at Harua.
"You're shameless" Harua shakes his head.
"Of course, but just for you" he winks.
Harua once again interlinks their fingers, even when class starts, because neither of them wanted to leave each other's hands. Even if that meant that Maki would be taking notes from his left hand, he didn't mind the struggle.
