Regulus was five when he knew who he wanted to be. Before, nothing had quite felt like him.
Regulus knew who he was when he was five, in the literal sense at least.
“How bad was it?” Regulus asked the same question he had asked Barty. “Confession. You never told me.”
“What’s there to tell?” Sirius scoffed. "I spent seven years there."

Regulus always wanted to be a good child to his parents, accepting their beliefs without second thought. As he aged, he realised that it wasn't as simple as he had been brought up to believe. Over the course of a few weeks, Regulus's entire life fell apart, and, therefore, he went to find comfort in the only place he could think of
